In the expansive DC Universe, Batman stands as the top enforcer of justice, safeguarding Gotham City against some of the most wicked supervillains and ruthless criminals conceivable. Known for his unwavering moral compass, Batman is often fierce in combat with his adversaries, but he refuses to take a life. To him, ending a life merely begets more lives lost, an idea he finds unacceptable. Nevertheless, there’s one antagonist that many believe deserves an exception to this rule — the Joker. The Joker is a notorious mass murderer who has claimed thousands of lives throughout his career.
In the long run, if Batman had killed the Joker, many lives might have been saved. However, reflecting on past events, it’s clear that at certain points, allowing the Joker to live instead had significant consequences.
Batman Dying in Endgame
In the comic book “Batman: Endgame,” penned by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, served as the second significant Joker tale within the New 52 continuity. The Joker exploited his Joker Venom to dominate the Justice League, placing Batman in a predicament where he had to engage them in combat. However, this was merely the start of their confrontation. The Joker engaged in psychological warfare with Batman, distorting his past to gain an advantage over his adversary. In due course, the Joker managed to trace Batman to the Batcave, leading to a fierce fight that ended tragically when the Batcave collapsed, resulting in the apparent deaths of both characters.
If Batman had eliminated the Joker earlier in their history, several significant events could have been avoided. For one, the Joker wouldn’t have seized power over the Justice League. More crucially, Batman himself might have been spared from death. Although he was revived by an element called Dionesium and regained consciousness, being buried under the Batcave wasn’t a pleasant experience. Moreover, if Batman had been active during Mr. Bloom’s attack on Gotham City instead of James Gordon, the outcome could have been drastically different.
Sarah Essen Died in No Man’s Land
In the comic book series “Batman: No Man’s Land,” Gotham City underwent a significant transformation following a lethal virus outbreak and an earthquake, leading to the U.S. government isolating the city from the rest of the country. The ensuing chaos resulted in the law enforcement and criminal elements dividing the city into distinct territories. With Batman and his allies working tirelessly to safeguard the innocent, the Joker made a late appearance, abducting a group of children. In a tragic turn of events, the only person attempting to thwart the Joker was Jim Gordon’s second wife, Sarah Essen. However, her efforts ultimately proved fruitless as the Joker ended up taking her life.
In the comic book series “No Man’s Land”, the Joker was a wild card – an unpredictable element that could cause chaos at any moment. Despite everyone anticipating his mischief, nobody foresaw him murdering Sarah Essen. Had Batman ended up killing the Joker instead, such a tragic event would not have transpired. The Joker’s actions would not have led to further pain for Commissioner Gordon by taking another woman from his life, and GCPD would still have one of its most esteemed police officers in Sarah Essen.
Emperor Joker‘s Atrocities
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, let me share some thoughts on the infamous Joker. While he’s undeniably dangerous, his typical exploits don’t usually result in mass destruction that could endanger the entire planet. His Joker Toxin can claim hundreds or even thousands of lives under specific circumstances, but it’s not a global threat. However, there are exceptions, like when he obtained the powers of Mr. Mxyzptlk and transformed into Emperor Joker in the comic “Emperor Joker.”
With the godlike abilities granted by this fifth-dimensional imp, Emperor Joker wreaked havoc on our world, plunging it into chaos and causing an unimaginable amount of pain and suffering. It was a dark time indeed!
The tyrant Joker subjected Batman to cruel treatment and committed actions such as devouring every inhabitant in China. This version of the villain was undeniably terrifying, and though all the destruction he caused was rectified following his loss of power, it should never have transpired. Had Batman eliminated him, the malevolent Emperor Joker would not have resurfaced again.
Barbara Gordon’s Paralysis in Batman: The Killing Joke
Barbara Gordon, a significant figure in the DC Universe, spent years as Batgirl, working alongside Batman and Robin, displaying both strength and intellect. But her life took an unexpected turn after the events of “Batman: The Killing Joke.” In this story, the Joker aimed to demonstrate that one unfortunate day could shatter anyone’s life, focusing his attack on Jim Gordon. He started by shooting Barbara, causing severe damage to her spine and leaving her wheelchair-bound. This tragic event led to her transformation into Oracle, a role that elevated her influence in the superhero community. Barbara went on to create the Birds of Prey team and even temporarily joined the Justice League. Although she eventually regained the use of her legs, the emotional scar from the Joker’s attack remained with her throughout her life.
One of the Joker’s most heinous actions was his assault on Barbara Gordon. Since he wasn’t aware she was Batgirl, he cruelly chose to inflict pain upon her with the intention of causing Jim Gordon further distress. This horrific act could have been prevented if Batman had taken the Joker’s life. While some believe that Barbara excelled as Oracle more than as Batgirl, it doesn’t diminish the fact that she shouldn’t have had to endure such hardship.
The Death of Jason Todd in Death in the Family
In my humble opinion as a movie reviewer, the chilling portrayal of Jason Todd’s demise in “A Death in the Family” served as a pivotal moment in the ongoing battle between Batman and the Joker. The villainous Joker cleverly manipulated Todd, using his mother as bait, and then mercilessly assaulted him with a crowbar before detonating an explosive device. This tragic event left an indelible mark on Batman’s mind; Robin represented hope for Batman, a beacon that reminded him that there was still light in this dark world. The loss of Jason Todd temporarily shattered Batman, leading him to question himself and retreat from those who cared for him most.
If Batman hadn’t let the Joker live, Jason Todd wouldn’t have met his untimely end. The consequences of Todd’s death were far-reaching, and though he was later brought back to life, the pain of his passing lingered not just for him but also within the Bat-Family. For a while, Todd turned into the antagonist Red Hood, clashing with his former allies. Despite his eventual redemption, the scars of his violent past will forever remain, and it’s a tragedy that such an outcome might have been prevented.
