Caution Ahead: This write-up discloses significant plot points from the movie ‘Last Breath’. If you haven’t seen this gripping underwater rescue tale yet, it would be best to come back up for air and enjoy it on Peacock after securing a subscription.
This year, I’ve managed to catch quite a few 2025 movies on the big screen, but unfortunately, I didn’t get to see everything as originally planned, including “Last Breath”, a tense survival thriller about a saturation diver who gets separated from his crew during a massive North Sea storm. Although I watched it at home when it started streaming, I can’t help but feel that I missed out on a truly cinematic experience.
I must clarify, the gripping true-story thriller featuring Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, and Finn Cole was an all-round winner for me – it kept me tense and restless throughout, making me move around my room several times. Yet, some particularly intense sequences could have been even more impactful if I had watched them on a large cinema screen instead.
Chris And David’s Attempt To Reach The Diving Bell Was Probably So Intense On The Big Screen
In the midst of a storm, Chris Lemons (Finn Cole) and his partner David Yuasa (Simu Liu), who is a saturation diver, are dispatched for routine maintenance on some gas lines located 300 feet beneath the surface of the North Sea. However, an unexpected glitch in the ship’s positioning system turns their ordinary task into a desperate race against time. If they fail to return to their diving bell quickly, they may be stranded at the ocean floor with limited oxygen supply.
In the movie “Last Breath,” around the 30-minute mark, there’s an exhilarating, nerve-wracking chase for safety as the skilled divers make their way to the bell and ascend to the surface. Watching it from home had me on edge; I can only imagine the intensity multiplied in a dark theater with a large screen.
But the movie was just getting started…

The Moment Chris’ Line Snapped, Pulling Him To The Seabed, Had To Have Been Terrifying
Despite the trailer for “Last Breath” hinting at Chris’ dialogue stopping right before he reaches safety and plunges into the ocean, the scene retained its suspense when I watched the movie on Peacock. In fact, knowing that it would occur but not precisely when, heightened the tension and excitement of the sequence considerably.
On a peaceful Sunday afternoon, while sorting laundry in my bedroom, I happened to witness an unfolding scene (and it was as if I were watching a thrilling movie on this particular Sunday). Had I been there in the local AMC Theaters’ Dolby Cinema, surrounded by strangers, I can only guess how terrifying it must have been for me. By that point, I would likely have been jittery, nervously biting my nails, and snacking excessively on a box of Milk Duds due to stress.

I Would Have Loved To Have Experienced The Deafening Silence Of Chris’ Attempt To Reach The Manifold
A scene I believe would have been equally impactful on the big screen is when Chris finds himself at the ocean floor, struggling to return to the manifold for rescue. Despite being less action-intensive than other parts of the film, this brief moment carries an overwhelming silence and a chilling tension that leaves one speechless (pun not intended). Trapped in a state of fear, reflection, and despair, it’s this short series of events that stood out as one of my favorite aspects within the entire movie.
In some instances at the theater, when the music and film sounds gradually diminish, leaving an almost magical hush, it’s likely such moments wouldn’t have failed to captivate us as well.

The Whole Race By The Bridge To Get The Ship Operational Had Me On The Edge Of My Seat
Similar to other disaster movies in the past, Last Breath doesn’t just concentrate on events beneath the water. Instead, it immerses us aboard a ship’s bridge with Captain Andre Jenson (Cliff Curtis), as he and his team struggle to rescue Chris from a watery grave while simultaneously averting an ecological catastrophe by inadvertently damaging an underwater gas pipeline.
In this part of the film, scenes alternating between the underwater mission and Chris struggling to stay alive without an oxygen supply or a lifeline to the diving bell, are undeniably thrilling. Various characters get their moments to prove their mettle as they strive to save lives – both below and above the waterline. This adds a breathless yet fulfilling layer to the narrative. Unfortunately, my TV speakers aren’t what they once were, so I can only imagine how much more chaotic and immersive the whole experience must have been when watching the movie as intended on a theater screen.

I Can Only Imagine How I Would Have Reacted To Those Terrifying Shots Of The North Sea
Have you seen any videos from the North Sea on social media platforms like TikTok or X? It’s a vast and perilous waterway that links with the Atlantic Ocean through the English Channel. In many real-life scenarios, the sea is portrayed as a menacing entity, always ready to swallow up anyone who dares to venture into its treacherous, icy waters (which are only two degrees above freezing, as one character points out).
Regardless of whether it’s bright or gloomy, day or night, the North Sea is impressively dominant throughout the movie, leaving me in awe at how massive those waves must have appeared and felt in a cinema equipped with top-notch visual and audio technology. A term like ‘breathtaking’ barely scratches the surface of describing its grandeur.

I Would Have Loved To See How Audiences Would Have Reacted To David Rescuing Chris At The End
Among the things I enjoy most when attending a movie is overhearing conversations about it as people exit. Whether positive or negative, these discussions aid me in understanding how the general public perceives the film. I was eager to hear others’ thoughts on this thriller, particularly regarding the climax where David saves Chris.
In a less dramatic fashion compared to Captain America’s iconic “Avengers… assemble” in the intense battle of Avengers: Endgame, I can only imagine that the scene was thrilling, eliciting at least one cheer and some sporadic applause throughout the theater. However, for me, it was simply a jump that toppled my laundry pile, while my cat casually watched before returning to slumber.
To sum up, I’m pleased that I eventually watched “Last Breath” despite not being able to experience it in its original version. It may not be my top pick of the year, but it made for an enjoyable way to spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon.
