Initially, Marvel Cinematic Universe post-credit scenes had a consistent pattern of foreshadowing upcoming movies either soon to be released or within the next year on their schedule. However, with Phase Four, there’s been a significant shift in approach. Instead of hinting at movies that are just around the corner, the MCU started teasing potential sequels and spin-offs that were years away and not yet in production.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share my perspective on why certain changes were made, hinting that the climax of “Avengers: Endgame” was just the beginning of many more Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) tales yet to unfold. However, this tactic seemed to have resulted in a multitude of unresolved plot points within the franchise. Let’s delve into six post-credit scenes from the MCU that never materialized, leaving both casual moviegoers and comic book enthusiasts equally puzzled.
Doctor Strange: Mordo’s Quest to End All Sorcerers
In simpler terms, a previously unrealized post-credit scene from before 2021 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe featured Doctor Strange’s scene where Mordo, transforming into his villainous comic book character, took away magic powers from Jonathan Pangborn to prevent him from walking. Mordo then declared his intent to eliminate all wizards, setting up Mordo as the main antagonist for a potential Doctor Strange sequel. However, the plot developments of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ultimately led to the original Mordo not reappearing, making way instead for an alternate version of Mordo who was part of The Illuminati.
In a different scenario, 616’s Mordo might have suffered a more severe fate in the “Multiverse of Madness.” Instead of just appearing in the post-credits scene, he could have been decapitated by Wanda Maximoff at the end of the movie.
Eternals: Enter Starfox (and Pip the Troll)
In the mid-credits scene of “Doctor Strange”, a character previously seen only in standalone Marvel stories was hinted at interacting with Thor, suggesting that this mystical figure would be joining the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. On the other hand, the mid-credits scene of “Eternals” delved further into the lore of the Eternals. Here, a group of Eternals in space encountered Pip the Troll (Patton Oswalt) and Eros/Starfox (Harry Styles), the brother of Thanos. Although the mid-credits scene of “Eternals” featured a well-known pop star, the tease of “Eternals 2” never materialized or was referenced again in subsequent MCU productions, so it’s unlikely that Harry Styles will reappear as Starfox anytime soon.
Eternals: Dane Whitman Contemplates a Sword
Peter Parker donned his Spider-Man suit quickly in his initial MCU appearance, similar to T’Challa/Black Panther during his debut in Captain America: Civil War. Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel was merely hinted at before her solo film, with a pager showing her insignia in the post-credits scene of Infinity War. On the other hand, Eternals devoted considerable screen time to the less exciting character Dane Whitman (Kit Harington), foreshadowing his family background and potential hidden powers, which are hints towards the enigmatic Marvel Comics hero, Black Knight, who is actually Dane Whitman’s alter ego.
In the end credits of Eternals, Whitman is portrayed pondering over his decision to grasp the ancient mystical sword, which bestows him with superpowers. As he’s about to touch it, a voice (belonging to Mahershala Ali as Blade) echoes from off-screen, questioning whether he truly wishes to take hold of that weapon. However, neither Whitman (as Black Knight) nor Blade have had significant appearances in subsequent Marvel Cinematic Universe productions since then.
Moon Knight: Witness the Cruelty of Jake Lockley
In contrast to most connections with the Marvel Cinematic Universe being minimized in Moon Knight, the series still included a post-credits scene. During the final episode, a third persona for the character Marc Spector (played by Oscar Isaac) was unveiled as the ruthless Jake Lockley. This menacing figure (favored by the god Khonshu) eliminates the main villain Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) and seems to be a formidable adversary for future Moon Knight stories. However, in the past three years of live-action Marvel Universe content, Jake Lockley has yet to appear, and it appears less probable that he’ll receive a comprehensive exploration within this franchise.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: Clea Arrives
In the comics, one of Doctor Strange’s key sidekicks, Clea, was introduced in live-action for the first time during the mid-credits scene of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Charlize Theron portrayed Clea and spurred Doctor Strange to explore new realms with her in the Dark Dimension. Given Theron’s popularity and reputation, it was anticipated that Clea would swiftly become a significant figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, since her initial appearance, Clea has been noticeably absent. Could it be that the Dark Dimension swallowed her whole?
Thor: Love and Thunder: Hercules is On a Mission
16 years ago, even if you weren’t familiar with Nick Fury, moviegoers perked up when the legendary Samuel L. Jackson emerged from the shadows in 2008. Fast forward to today, and the mid-credits scene of Thor: Love and Thunder featured Brett Goldstein, who gained recognition on an Apple TV+ show just two years prior. If you weren’t acquainted with Marvel Comics’ Hercules, Goldstein may not have been famous enough to make that scene as thrilling as it needed to be. In the scene, Russell Crowe’s Zeus sent his son Hercules to exact vengeance on Thor and his companions. Despite this ominous warning, Hercules hasn’t appeared again in the MCU. Perhaps it was wise not to cast a more renowned actor for the role of Hercules, given his limited screen time so far. As a film enthusiast, I find it fascinating how casting choices can impact the audience’s reaction and anticipation.
Thor: Love and Thunder and the other films on this list are all now streaming on Disney+.
