With spring now fully underway, it signals the arrival of the yearly summer blockbuster movie season. This could bring a multitude of viewers back to cinemas; however, since the same studios releasing these films also operate streaming platforms, it’s clear they don’t want to completely monopolize your screen time at home.
If you find the latest films in cinemas not appealing to your taste, this week’s streaming suggestions offer some theatrical releases you might have overlooked, along with the premieres of fresh seasons for a variety of well-liked streaming shows.
Poker Face, Season 2 – May 8 (Peacock)
The most frustrating aspect of the modern streaming TV world is the prolonged gap between seasons for shows that manage to last beyond just one season. I subscribed to Peacock primarily for Poker Face, and now I’m excited to finally watch Season 2, which I’ve been eagerly anticipating. Natasha Lyonne reappears with a star-studded cast, unraveling fresh mysteries while trying to stay alive herself.

Criminal Minds: Evolution, Season 3 – May 8 (Paramount+)
Intriguing move indeed, when CBS opted to end the run of their hit procedural show, Criminal Minds, and then resurrect it on their network. The series has maintained its pace, as starting this week, your Paramount+ subscription grants you access to the commencement of the third season of Criminal Minds: Evolution.

Conan O’Brien Must Go, Season 2 – May 8 (Max)
Conan O’Brien is one of our most valuable sources of humor, and he should be preserved at any price. He managed to host the Oscars, a challenging and usually fruitless role, and did it so brilliantly that they’ve already asked him back. Interestingly enough, he also excels as the host for a travel show. If you have a Max subscription, you can utilize it to watch the new season of “Conan O’Brien Must Roam” and witness this amusing man explore stunning and unique destinations, all while making a spectacle of himself in the process.

Heart Eyes – May 8 (Netflix)
Heart Eyes stood out in the world of cinema by earning more revenue during its second weekend at the box office than its initial showing. This suggests that word-of-mouth recommendations were strong enough to convince fans that it was a horror movie worth experiencing. Despite not being a massive blockbuster, if you’re among those who missed it and have a Netflix subscription, now’s your chance to catch up!

Love Hurts – May 9 (Peacock)
Without much success at the box office for “Love Hurts” featuring Ke Huy Quan, it’s likely you missed catching the romantic action/comedy in theaters. But don’t miss out! The film is full of fun, and a reminder that Hollywood may have overlooked making Quan a leading man years ago. Keep an eye out for its release on Peacock, and give it a watch!

Summer of ‘69 – May 9 (Hulu)
Under the shared guidance of Jillian Bell as both writer and director, the film titled “Summer of ‘69” unfolds an unconventional bond between a teenage girl and her hired exotic dancer, who assists in winning over her high school infatuation. This R-rated comedy about teenage romantic escapades is not a genre that’s been widely explored lately, but perhaps it’s the female point of view that has been missing from such narratives.
There’s still a lot more to look forward to in May for fans, especially the last three episodes of the series Andor, which will be available on Disney+ starting next week.
