Even though the Sonic movies have already produced three full-length films and a TV series spin-off on Paramount+, they are yet to incorporate some of the most iconic characters from the video games they’re adapted from, which feature James Marsden and Ben Schwartz in leading roles. The Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise has been steadily introducing characters from the Sonic games, such as Shadow The Hedgehog, Knuckles, Tails, and numerous others.
Although some prominent characters from the “Sonic the Hedgehog” video games are still missing in the “Sonic” movies, the upcoming game “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” is expected to address these absences by introducing Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, as hinted at in the mind-blowing post-credits scene of “Sonic 3”.
The “Sonic The Hedgehog” movie series started under Paramount Pictures in 2020, spinning a tale of an out-of-place fish, namely a vibrant blue hedgehog hailing from another world named Sonic (Ben Schwartz). Upon arriving on Earth, Sonic becomes friendly with a sheriff from a small town, Tom (James Marsden), who takes in the swift-moving extraterrestrial and instructs him about human life.
It’s been confirmed that a fourth movie featuring “Sonic the Hedgehog” has been announced, now titled “Sonic The Hedgehog 4”. The director, Jeff Fowler, will be back at the helm for this film. We can expect “Sonic 4” to hit theaters on March 19, 2027.
The Biggest Sonic Characters Still Missing from the Movies
Big the Cat
Among Sonic devotees, Big the Cat is often the target of jokes, but he remains a beloved character among the diverse cast of “Sonic the Hedgehog”. However, despite fan anticipation following the release of every movie, Big the Cat has yet to make his debut on the big screen in any form.
Big the Cat, a big purple feline, debuted in “Sonic Adventure” on the Sega Dreamcast. Unlike other Sonic characters who enjoy causing mischief, speeding through levels, and fighting bad guys, Big has a more peaceful interest – fishing! His favorite pastime is simply sitting by a body of water, patiently waiting to catch his daily supply.
Given that Team Rose includes both Amy Rose and you, as well as the upcoming movie premiere in Sonic 4, it’s quite logical for Big the Cat, the cat-sized feline who often accompanies the hammer-wielding hedgehog, to be part of the scene too.
Cream the Rabbit
As a movie-loving bunny enthusiast, it appears that Cream the Rabbit could be an ideal fit for future Sonic films, considering the recent hints dropped in the form of Sonic 3 merchandise back in the final months of last year.
A series of Funko Pop figures were introduced together with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, showcasing fresh Funko-styled versions of characters from the film. Interestingly, Cream the Rabbit, a character not yet confirmed for the movie, was also included in this lineup.
Even though Cream didn’t make it into Sonic 3, her strong bond as Amy Rose’s best friend in the games suggests that she would seamlessly fit into the upcoming Sonic movie.
Silver the Hedgehog
Originating from “Sonic the Hedgehog” (2006), Silver the Hedgehog is a hedgehog character who travels through time and hails from 200 years ahead, sent back to our present to maintain peace in his future by preventing catastrophes that might occur in the past.
Silver, who typically plays a minor role in the Sonic universe, might seem unexpected, but given the franchise’s history of pushing boundaries, his potential appearance in a future movie wouldn’t come as a complete surprise. After all, the movies have shown they aren’t afraid to explore unconventional territories.
In the case of “Sonic the Hedgehog 4”, it’s worth noting that the upcoming film seems to involve time travel. Some fans have suggested that “Sonic 4” might be a direct adaptation of “Sonic CD”, but since “Sonic CD” doesn’t feature Silver, his appearance isn’t impossible given the game’s emphasis on time travel.
Chao
In films based on the Sonic series, the charming Chaos have made an appearance, but not in their game-accurate versions that fans are accustomed to. Early on in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the Sonic team encountered Tom Butler’s GUN Commander Walters at a café called Chao Garden, which showcased oversized mascots based on the game’s fairy-like creatures, the Chaos.
For devoted Sonic gamers, these small, alien creatures were more than just an amusing surprise; they sparked a longing for the main course. These tiny beings could be nurtured in several Sonic games (most notably in Sonic Adventure 2), and they share a strong connection with Cream the Rabbit, as one specific Chao named Cheese resides with her.
Introducing chaos into the Sonic films might necessitate a journey to Sonic’s native alien planet, a place the movie series hasn’t delved into extensively so far. But with hints at their presence in Sonic 3, it seems almost certain that they will make an appearance eventually.
Rouge the Bat
In the debut of Metal Sonic in “Sonic 4”, the Sonic movie series may delve deeper into the formidable enemies of the blue hero. Why not extend the action and incorporate Rouge the Bat as well?
Rouge, a globally recognized treasure seeker, occasionally collaborates with Sonic and his companions to foil their schemes. Yet, she seldom gets entangled in causes beyond herself; she typically joins forces with others to advance her personal agenda, often driven by the pursuit of hidden riches.
Introducing the Rogue character into the Sonic the Hedgehog films could provide an intriguing new element, as she embodies a captivating double agent persona, something that has been lacking in the antagonists of previous Sonic movies.
E-102 Gamma
In the Sonic films, one character from the villainous rogues’ gallery who has yet to make an appearance is E-102 Gamma, a robotic creation of Dr. Robotnik (portrayed by Jim Carrey). This bipedal combat machine was designed by Dr. Robotnik specifically to confront Team Sonic. Equipped with an assault rifle arm and enhanced mechanical strength, E-102 Gamma poses a significant threat to the main characters in the Sonic series.
In the ultimate fight scene of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”, fans encountered E-102 Gamma. It seemed like an army of robots modeled after a character’s likeness fought against Sonic and Shadow, high up in space. Interestingly, these robots resembled the E-100 models more than the enhanced E-102 versions (as depicted in “Sonic Adventure 2”).
Following three consecutive defeats at the hands of Sonic in Sonic 3, Jim Carrey’s on-screen villain might seek an improvement in his strategies and construct E-102 as a new tool, setting the stage for their next spectacular showdown on-screen.
