The popular franchises of “Alien” and “Predator” are gaining momentum once more due to the success of recent installments such as “Prey” and “Alien: Romulus”. Directors Dan Trachtenberg and Fede Alvarez appear to be steering both series towards a potential collision. The trailer for “Predator: Badlands” hints at this by setting up another chance at the classic showdown and merging both franchises into one universe. Movie enthusiasts should keep an eye on these films when they hit theaters in fall, especially since Alvarez has suggested he might jointly direct a future “Alien vs. Predator” movie – although no official news has been announced yet.
Prior to finalizing the concept for our upcoming film featuring the two iconic alien creatures, there are some elements we’d like to consider, develop, or adjust. Although these characters have appeared together in past collaborations by Paul W.S. Anderson and The Brothers Strause, and numerous efforts have been made to unite them within the same universe, the outcomes were underwhelming. However, the recent successes of ‘Prey’, ‘Romulus’, and the intriguing hints dropped in ‘Predator: Killer of Killers’ give us hope that a rebooted ‘AVP’ movie could offer a significantly different experience compared to its predecessors.
In any potential crossover sequel, we hope to maintain several elements from both franchises. Many components from the initial comics and games seem ripe for adaptation on the big screen. Meanwhile, the latest movies are enriching the lore by creating a cohesive universe.
1) Different Types of Xenomorphs
In the Alien series, particularly before Alien 3, there was a line of toys showcasing various types of Xenomorphs. The third film revealed that the Xenomorphs adopt characteristics of their hosts when they hatch, with the creature in this movie emerging from a dog. Subsequent installments, such as video games and comics, introduced hybrids like the Predalien. However, what’s intriguing is the exploration of different castes within the Xenomorph society, including the King Alien or the sovereign Xenomorph, which hatches from a unique egg laid by the Queen Alien.
It’s great if we can introduce the Praetorian Alien character in our story, demonstrating further stages of Xenomorph evolution beyond what was shown in James Cameron’s “Aliens”. The Predator movies suggest that these creatures engage in genetic modification for self-improvement, providing a potential direction for their evolution. Additionally, the series “Romulus” introduced a new human-alien hybrid using the Z-01 mutagen compound, which could be another intriguing path for a crossover scenario.
2) More on Predator Culture
In our desire to delve deeper into the intricacies of the Xenomorph civilization, we’re eager for another installment of the “Alien vs. Predator” series to further enrich the backstory associated with the Predator, or Yautja as they are known in the extended universe. We’ve already had glimpses into their culture through brief snippets since “Predator 2”, and it was in this film that hints of a crossover between these two franchises were first introduced, making it an appropriate continuation.
Films such as “Predators” and the recently streamed “Killer of Killers” on Hulu offer a glimpse into the complex societal structure of the Yautja, providing insights into their hierarchy, unique roles, and evolutions. For instance, it’s interesting to learn about the relationship between the Yautja warriors and their leaders, as well as the diverse abilities and specializations among these hunters. The Predator series, including “Predators” and “The Predator”, also introduce variations in the Yautja society, offering a rich tapestry of understanding this fascinating alien culture.
3) Unused Concepts for a Third AVP Film
The Strause Brothers contemplated a third AVP film following the premiere of Requiem, aiming to bring the action back into space after two movies set on Earth. According to rumors, the plot would launch from the gun discovered by the Yutani Corporation in the final scene, eventually leading humans to venture into outer space. Given the vast changes in lore and canon since Requiem‘s release, some concepts could potentially be adapted from these proposed story arcs.
One significant idea connects with an entry previously mentioned as we introduce King Alien into the scenario, where he clashes with an entire Yautja tribe. Yet, there was also a suggested animated series titled “AVP: Annihilation,” which is a 10-episode anime series. This series is now completed and has been stored away in Disney’s vault, as per Far Out. It would have served to connect the dots between “Alien: Resurrection” and any forthcoming productions, enriching the universe further.

4) Origins/First Encounter
There is no known account in films, books, comics, or games that explains the initial meeting between the Yautja and the Xenomorphs. The first Alien vs. Predator film hinted at the Predators utilizing Xenomorph eggs for their unique hunts, but it occurred after both species were already established.
Badlands.” Could it be that humanity is responsible for unleashing the Xenomorphs on the Yautja, and now both parties must suffer the consequences?
5) Black Goo
In the movie ‘Romulus’, the mutagen Z-01 played a crucial role, tying together the mysterious black substance from ‘Prometheus’ with the era of the initial ‘Alien’. It seems that director Ridley Scott has wrapped up his work on the ‘Alien’ series, having introduced David, the goo, and a backstory for the Xenomorphs. This development has essentially invalidated much of the extended universe spawned from the original films. However, the ending of ‘Romulus’ and the hint towards Weyland Yutani in ‘Badlands’ suggest that these events could pave the way for a fresh, promising direction for the ‘Alien’ saga.
In the “Fire and Stone” segment of the Alien vs. Predator series, they explored the idea first seen in Prometheus with the black goo. Just as it altered the character Fifield in Prometheus, the Predator undergoes a similar transformation. The mutated Yautja became larger, sporting an additional arm from its shoulder, and had an increased number of mandibles around its mouth. Much like Fifield, this mutated creature was wild and instantly aggressive, much like the Xenomorph.
6) Machiko Noguchi
In the end, it would be great if we could either incorporate Machiko Noguchi as a character into the films, or use her as a model for someone who has embraced the Yautja culture. Noguchi was introduced in the initial story of Aliens vs. Predator, serving as an administrator for the Chigusa Corporation on their colony planet Ryushi. Although parts of the narrative may mirror the first AVP movie, it also involves humans and Yautja working together to halt a Xenomorph invasion on Earth.
In the comic, some intriguing developments unfold as Machiko is the lone survivor and resident on the planet. After being branded by the clan leader, Broken Tusk, she becomes part of the hunting culture and resides with them on their world. We’ve previously seen in “Killer of Killers” that the Yautja capture warriors who defeat them for gladiatorial combat. It’s also worth noting that Naru is among those kept frozen for future use, along with others likely to be included from past interactions. Could it be possible that one of these individuals is Machiko? Or could Naru transform into a character similar to Machiko, complete with armor, weapons, and dreadlocks like the mandibled hunters? I’d gladly pay for such a story!
