This week, I found myself joining countless other fans in expressing my wholehearted backing towards developer Hangar 13. Their recent announcement about Mafia: The Old Country opting for a linear, storyline-centric gaming journey rather than an open world, has struck a chord with many of us. It’s exciting to see them focusing on a more immersive and engaging narrative-driven experience!
Historically, publishers such as Take-Two might have concealed this aspect, but given that games are becoming larger and more time-consuming, there’s a growing preference for straightforward, concise gaming experiences.
In a just manner, the company has set the price for the sequel reasonably: the game set in Sicily will retail at $49.99 or £44.99 upon release, which is significantly lower than the upcoming $79.99 titles that are expected to become standard.

Most of you seem content with this approach, as evidenced by a Push Square poll: an impressive 64% of you expressed joy that the game isn’t open-world. A smaller group, 19%, expressed a desire for a sandbox style, while the remaining 18% are indifferent or have mixed feelings.
At this juncture, it’s important to note that Mafia series has typically approached its open worlds in a unique manner when compared to games like Grand Theft Auto, with only a few exceptions such as Mafia 3, which was met with criticism for its monotonous gameplay structure.
The initial Mafia games featured what’s commonly known as a “false 3D world” – a mostly unresponsive setting that could be explored, but its primary function was merely to facilitate travel from one place to another. While these games were certainly atmospheric and stylish, they didn’t significantly enhance the overall gameplay experience.
In today’s age of oversized budgets for development and continuous production, it’s quite invigorating to witness a studio admit its limitations and trim the excess. Is it appealing to delve into 1900s Sicily? Absolutely! However, that would require substantial resources and extended time for creation. Instead, we’re content with an affordable, narrative-focused campaign.
The Old Country will reinforce this lesson, and Hangar 13 is acknowledged for their thoughtful approach to the sequel.
