The Arrowverse often faces criticism for distorting DC Comics characters. The series incorporates significant figures from DC into shows filled with emotional turmoil, awkward scenes, and bizarre plot twists, making it challenging to overlook these aspects. However, the Arrowverse boasts several exceptional characters, like Oliver Queen, who transforms from a small-time vigilante with a penchant for violence to a divine figure who safeguards the multiverse from destruction. One reason Oliver of the Arrowverse is endearing lies in his unique portrayal, as he doesn’t share a cinematic counterpart; however, numerous characters that appear on The CW also make appearances on the big screen.
The Arrowverse frequently gets flak for altering DC Comics characters. By including important figures from DC into shows brimming with melodrama, awkward scenes, and unconventional storylines, it can be tough to ignore these shortcomings. Yet, the Arrowverse boasts a number of impressive characters, such as Oliver Queen, who evolves from a small-time vigilante with a penchant for violence to a god-like figure who protects the multiverse from destruction. One reason Oliver in the Arrowverse is appealing stems from his unique representation, since he doesn’t have a cinematic equivalent; however, many characters that appear on The CW also show up on the big screen.
Batman plays a minor part in the show “Batwoman” and also appears during the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover. Regrettably, his screen time is limited, not providing him ample opportunity to surpass the greatness of Michael Keaton’s Batman portrayal. On the contrary, the characters from Arrowverse outshine their big-screen counterparts.
1) Superman
Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of Superman on the big screen is widely regarded as the benchmark for superhero films; there’s no question about it. Nevertheless, his movies don’t delve deeply into an essential part of the character: his family. The TV series Superman & Lois, though only tenuously linked to the Arrowverse, offers a glimpse into the challenges Clark Kent faces as both a father and a superhero. As the show progresses, his character evolves significantly, demonstrating that there’s more to the Man of Steel than just his physical prowess, which is often the focus in the DC Extended Universe.
2) The Flash
Although the Flash in the DCEU possesses great potential, his portrayal within Zack Snyder’s franchise is inconsistent and fails to establish a solid foundation. Conversely, Barry Allen from The CW stands out as one of the few strengths amidst a series that often falters. As the show progresses, Barry evolves into a selfless leader, willing to give up everything for the people he cherishes. Such devotion embodies true heroism at its finest.
3) Deathstroke
In the Arrowverse, the spotlight often falls on the heroes, but let’s not forget about its impressive roster of villains. Slade Wilson is one such character who stands out among them, causing misery for Oliver Queen before eventually switching sides and joining forces with him to defeat Prometheus. However, when it comes to the DCEU, Deathstroke hasn’t been as fortunate – he’s been inserted into a handful of scenes only to hint at tales that never fully materialize.
4) Iris West
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my admiration for how Barry Allen relies on his wife, Iris West, in The Flash series to safeguard Central City. Despite a few questionable decisions in later seasons, her character remains mostly unblemished. Unfortunately, the big-screen adaptation of The Flash attempts to capitalize on this positive momentum by introducing its own version of Iris, yet she’s relegated to the sidelines for much of the narrative and is rarely given the opportunity to shine.
5) Katana
2016’s movie “Suicide Squad” assembles a team of unsavory individuals at a time when the world is in dire need. Among them is Katana, who isn’t inherently evil, but joins Task Force X nonetheless. Together, they manage to overcome Enchantress. However, her character in this film lacks the complexity found in the Arrowverse version, where she frequently assists Green Arrow, even after their battle with Ra’s al Ghul and despite harboring a grudge against him. In contrast, the Arrowverse Katana lends significant aid to Green Arrow on multiple occasions, demonstrating more depth as a character.
6) Deadshot
In the film “Suicide Squad,” another significant character is Deadshot, portrayed by Will Smith. He’s a hired gun yearning to reunite with his daughter and will go against anyone if necessary for this purpose. Despite being one of the standout aspects of a less-than-stellar movie, the DCEU’s Deadshot pales in comparison to the Arrowverse version, who has an impressive storyline that culminates in him sacrificing himself to protect his teammates.
7) Martian Manhunter
In the movies, Martian Manhunter is recognized for his presence throughout Zack Snyder’s DC films, but he only unveils himself at the very end. However, in the Arrowverse, J’onn J’onzz forms a strong alliance with Supergirl and embarks on numerous journeys that assist him in accepting his identity as one of the last Martians.
In movies, Martian Manhunter is known for being in all Snyder’s DC films and only revealing himself at the end. But in the Arrowverse, J’onn J’onzz is a close ally to Supergirl and goes on adventures that help him accept his Martian identity.
