James Gunn’s version of the DC Universe has a significant task ahead in getting back on track. The cinematic universe it’s based on, the DC Extended Universe, struggled to maintain balance, ultimately faltering after placing too much responsibility on ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and delivering an inconsistent theater release of ‘Justice League’. Despite these setbacks, there were redeemable aspects within the DCEU, such as Amanda Waller and Peacemaker, a character Gunn introduced in ‘The Suicide Squad’, which garnered enough acclaim to merit its own spinoff series. However, it’s not just ‘Peacemaker’ that has found success in recent times within the DC universe.
The Arrowverse, active from 2012 to 2023, encompassed six TV series and multiple seasons worth of content. Not every episode was a hit, but the franchise boasted numerous memorable characters who could potentially flourish within the DC Universe.
1) The Flash
In the Arrowverse, The Flash (Barry Allen) outpaces his DCEU counterpart, developing a comprehensive narrative that transitions him from a cautious hero to a guardian of multiple universes. Unfortunately, the series supporting him isn’t as strong, with its storyline often falling short. By transferring Barry’s tale to the broader DC Universe, we can place him at the heart of thrilling escapades once more, free from the constraints of excessive melodrama.
2) Constantine
Matt Ryan’s character John Constantine managed to endure a cancellation when his series on NBC was terminated. However, the character found new life in the Arrowverse, particularly in Legends of Tomorrow, where its unconventional nature was embraced. Ryan has since portrayed the character in animated productions, demonstrating that he’s the ideal choice for Gunn and Co. to contact when they plan to revive the character in live-action again.
3) Ray Palmer
A Tale with Potential Worth Mentioning is that of Ray Palmer, better known as The Atom. Originally a rival to Oliver Queen on the television show Arrow, he later becomes an integral member of the Waverider, working diligently to maintain order in the timeline. With the DC Universe already featuring characters of extraordinary intellect such as Mister Terrific, Ray appears poised to join their ranks and become another remarkable figure on the big screen. Furthermore, Brandon Routh, who plays Ray, has previous experience portraying DC characters in major motion pictures, which adds an extra layer of promise to his potential success.
4) Deathstroke
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice how often the Arrowverse’s heroic figures steal the spotlight, yet the franchise is brimming with remarkable villains too. One such standout is Deathstroke, who initially causes nothing but trouble for Oliver before transforming into an intriguing anti-hero. With the DCEU’s version of Slade Wilson falling short, I firmly believe that the DC Universe should revisit a character who has already proven to be captivating.
5) Kate Kane
In a nutshell, Kate Kane’s tenure within the Arrowverse has sparked quite a debate. She started off strong during the “Elseworlds” crossover, but subsequent behind-the-scenes complications sidelined her following Season 1 of her individual series. However, there remains much untapped potential in Kate’s narrative, and it goes without saying that a city like Gotham can always benefit from more crime-fighting figures.
6) Reverse-Flash
In the Arrowverse, Tom Cavanagh’s portrayal of Reverse-Flash stands out as one of the most intimidating DC villains ever. He is unyielding and consistently drives Barry Allen to his limits during their encounters. The DC Universe may eventually delve into the origins of Flash’s abilities, and if it does, there’s no actor more suited than Cavanagh to bring the grittier aspects of that narrative to the screen.
7) Jesse Quick
Despite appearing as just another speedster in the Arrowverse, Jesse Quick’s tale carries a profoundly sorrowful undertone. Her struggles revolve around reconnecting with her father, but their joyful reunion is tragically cut short by the Anti-Monitor, who annihilates their universe. Sadly, Jesse doesn’t get another opportunity within the Arrowverse, which is regrettable given that her spirited personality sets her apart in a series brimming with swift characters. It would be captivating to see Gunn and his team develop Jesse further if they were to introduce her into the storyline.
The Arrowverse shows are streaming on Netflix.
