As a lifelong fan of the Dune universe, I must say that my initial viewing of “Dune: Prophecy” left me with a mixed bag of emotions. On one hand, I was thrilled to return to this intricate and richly-imagined world, but on the other, I found myself struggling to fully immerse myself in the storytelling.
The “Dune: Prophecy” premiered on both HBO and Max last Sunday, transporting viewers back to the world established by Frank Herbert through his “Dune” books. However, reactions to the first episode of this eagerly awaited series have been varied. Before the events depicted in “Dune,” this series is a prequel, delving into the origins of the influential Bene Gesserit and while it promises an intriguing premise, online viewers have expressed their opinions. As the series unfolded on Sunday night, spectators turned to X (previously known as Twitter) to share their thoughts about “Dune: Prophecy” – and the feedback has been almost as engaging as the show itself.
Overall, feedback about the television series Dune: Prophecy on social media has been largely negative. Many viewers found it complex, somewhat confusing, and not what they had anticipated. However, mixed in with this general criticism were some very positive reactions. A recurring comment was that Dune: Prophecy bore more resemblance to a teen drama on The CW than an HBO prestige series. One viewer even stated, “Half the show is cool and expensive,” while the other half is “like a sexy CW teen drama.
“Heavy CW vibes from #DuneProphecy,” another wrote.
While there were negative assessments about some comparisons made with the CW show, it’s important to note that one viewer found a positive blend in the series, as if it successfully merged the atmospheres of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” with The CW’s “Reign.” They were intrigued by this fusion.

However, not everyone embraced the likeness to the “Game of Thrones” saga. In fact, some viewers drew parallels between this series and both “Game of Thrones” and its spin-off, “House of the Dragon.” Yet, these comparisons were often unfavorable as many viewers perceived it as overly derivative, leaving most fans less than enthused.
WHAT IN THE GAME OF THRONES?!!!! Lmao #DuneProphecy

Others were less tactful in their assessment of the series, stating directly that it lacks quality, and humorously emphasizing this viewpoint through the use of relevant memes.
Despite some viewers not being drawn to Dune: Prophecy yet, perhaps due to its resemblance to Game of Thrones or a CW-like feel, there were others who found aspects they appreciated. For a significant number of viewers, the intricate costume design alone made the series worth watching.
The costume design is flawless, showcasing a progression from the Bene Gesserit’s uniforms to the formal attire of ruling houses. I’m eagerly anticipating any exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpses. #DuneProphecy
