Many intense and surprising events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) haven’t been shown on the big screen; instead, they’ve been depicted in the MCU’s TV series available on Disney+. After wrapping up the Infinity Saga and setting up the Disney+ streaming service, Marvel Studios expanded into long-form television production. Although not all MCU TV shows have been warmly received, productions like WandaVision, Loki, and Moon Knight have gained considerable popularity, but they’ve also included some of Marvel’s most violent scenes.
The MCU has seen some of its most intense scenes unfold on the big screen, such as Thanos’ snap in “Avengers: Infinity War,” Pietro Maximoff’s demise in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and Johnny Storm losing his skin in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Yet, the MCU’s television series have also featured their fair share of shocking moments. Upcoming shows like “Ironheart,” Season 2 of “Daredevil: Born Again,” and “Vision Quest” might continue this trend as Marvel Studios’ TV productions are growing increasingly brutal.
7) John Walker Kills with Captain America’s Shield in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Initially appearing in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” as the successor to Captain America, John Walker (Wyatt Russell) later joined the New Avengers in “Thunderbolts.” However, his unsuitable demeanor for the Star-Spangled Man became evident, particularly after he was given the Flag Smashers’ super soldier serum. A tragic event – the death of Lemar Hoskins (Clé Bennett) – sparked a rage within him that resulted in him killing a Flag Smasher with Captain America’s shield in full view. This shocking incident ultimately led to his dismissal, and paved the way for his transformation into an anti-hero under the guidance of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).
6) Gravik Shoots Maria Hill Disguised as Nick Fury in Secret Invasion
2023’s “Secret Invasion” was one of the lowest-rated projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), partly due to some contentious choices. One such decision was the killing off of Maria Hill, a character played by Cobie Smulders, who had been working alongside Nick Fury, portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson, since 2012’s “The Avengers.” The death of Maria Hill in the premiere was a particularly poignant moment for “Secret Invasion,” made more startling as it was Skrull Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), disguised as Fury, who pulled the trigger. Hill passed away believing her longtime ally had taken her life, and her death went unavenged, adding to the bitter taste of the event.
5) Wanda Maximoff Throws Monica Rambeau Out of Westview in WandaVision
In its debut as Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first TV series, WandaVision raised the bar significantly for future productions by delving deeply into the complex character of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and her bond with Vision (Paul Bettany). The idea of Wanda, as the Scarlet Witch, keeping the town of Westview, New Jersey, under her control is chilling, but her heartless ejection of Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) from the town, without a thought for her fate, was even more startling. WandaVision signaled a transition in the Scarlet Witch’s character within the MCU, pushing her towards villainy, although many fans eagerly anticipate her potential return as a hero.
4) Yelena Belova Questions Clint Barton During A Fight in Hawkeye
As a devoted fan, I found Kate Bishop’s confrontation with Wilson Fisk in the finale of Hawkeye thrilling and intense, but it was the clash between Yelena Belova and Clint Barton that truly took my breath away. The chemistry between Jeremy Renner and Florence Pugh as Black Widow’s confidant and sibling was simply outstanding, adding an extra layer of emotion to Belova’s brutal interrogation of Barton.
The burning question on everyone’s mind was the truth about her sister’s demise in Avengers: Endgame, and Yelena’s relentless pursuit for answers brought a raw intensity to their encounter. Her eventual forgiveness of Clint Barton served as a poignant testament to Natasha Romanoff’s enduring legacy within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
3) Wendy Spector Abuses Young Marc in Moon Knight
2022’s “Moon Knight” series had its fair share of intense scenes, but none were as heart-wrenching and unsettling as when Wendy Spector (Fernande Andrade) succumbed to the shadows and mistreated her son. This unfolded following Randall Spector’s devastating demise, leaving a profound mark on Marc Spector (Oscar Isaac). This tragic event was instrumental in the birth of one of his alters, Steven Grant. The chilling line, “This is all your fault,” from Episode 5, “Asylum,” remains etched in memory, and sets the stage for some of the MCU’s most suggestive and harrowing sequences.
2) Ravonna Renslayer and Miss Minutes Murder General Dox in Loki
The scene where Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and Miss Minutes (Tara Strong) observed General Dox (Kate Dickie) and her followers being annihilated by the Time Variance Authority in Loki Season 2 was undeniably chilling. The joy on Miss Minutes’ face as she watched Dox and her troops disintegrate, combined with the subtle sounds of their destruction in the background, created a profoundly dark and intense moment within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the carnage itself wasn’t explicitly shown to us.
1) Kingpin Crushing Commissioner Gallo’s Head in Daredevil: Born Again
In contrast to Echo being Marvel Cinematic Universe’s inaugural TV-MA production, Deadpool & Wolverine maximizing their R-rating, Daredevil: Born Again sustained the mature theme of Netflix’s initial Daredevil series, earning its own TV-MA rating. Truly, it justified this rating. The climax of Season 1 found Wilson Fisk executing his mayoral ambitions for New York City, culminating in a brutal end for Commissioner Gallo (portrayed by Michael Gaston), as Kingpin crushed his skull with an uncanny force using only his bare hands.
In Season 2 of Daredevil, also known as Again, we can expect an increase in darkness and grittiness. The Kingpin, now Mayor of New York amid martial law, is expanding his influence. Meanwhile, Ironheart faces off against a villain armed with dark magic as the Hood. Furthermore, the Grim Reaper (Wonder Man), the returning Ultron from Vision Quest, a resurrected Scarlet Witch in Marvel Zombies, and other characters bring more intense action to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it expands further.
