Warning: spoilers for Matlock Season 1, Episode 18 – “Tricks of the Trade” are in session.
This week on Matlock, nothing fresh or exciting unfolded. Unfortunately, if you were eagerly anticipating Kathy Bates’ return on April 24 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS and opening a pack of Werther’s Originals to catch her in the 2025 TV lineup, you would have instead stumbled upon an episode of Elsbeth, a procedural starring Carrie Preston, which is most certainly not a new Matlock installment.
If you happened to watch the gripping Season 1 finale of Matlock, allow me to delve into some thought-provoking queries that were left hanging, courtesy of those nail-biting cliffhangers.
Who Will Olympia Choose: Julian Or Matty?
Indeed, it’s a complex predicament: Which man will Olympia Lawrence (Skye P. Marshall) pick – her ex-husband Julian (Jason Ritter), father of her children, or their mutual acquaintance who was exposed as a mole (Kathy Bates)? It’s not a simple choice, considering the repercussions of a thoughtless act by a self-proclaimed ‘daddy’s boy’ that unwittingly resulted in the death of Ellie Kingston, Madeline’s late daughter and the loving mother to Alfie (Aaron Harris). Keep this conundrum in mind, as it may intertwine with another question later on.

Is That Matlock Visitor Really Alfie’s Dad?
Regarding the cunning character, it was revealed at the end of “Tricks of the Trade” (Season 1) that an undisclosed individual named Niko Nicotera claimed Alfie had contacted him. This person further asserted that he is the father of the youngest Kingston family member, a plot point that has been hinted at throughout Season 1. The crucial question now is whether or not this man’s claim is genuine, given his potential intentions for the future.

Could Claudia Be Lying About Her Pregnancy?
At the point when you believed your Paramount+ membership was free of any advertisements promoting “Hot Billy Summer,” a significant disclosure occurred for David Del Rio’s character, a young lawyer. It seems his intermittent relationship with ex-girlfriend Claudia (Bella Ortiz) could have led to a potential child in Season 2, reminiscent of Matlock. However, one might wonder if this is just a ploy she’s using for some hidden purpose.

As a film enthusiast, diving into the world of Paramount Plus feels like embarking on an unending journey through the realm of entertainment! You can opt for the $7.99 a month plan or upgrade to the $12.99 a month package that offers Showtime’s extensive collection without commercial interruptions. The library boasts both original and revamped versions of classic shows like Matlock, providing endless viewing possibilities. Check out the deal now!
It’s possible that Claudia might have found out about Billy’s relationship with Simone (Andrea Londo). If so, one way to retaliate might be by starting a potential family together. As for Claudia, not much is known except that Billy greatly admired her. Given Billy’s history with relationships, this could potentially cause issues once more.

What’s Sarah Going To Be Like After Her Breakup With Kira?
Sarah, who is not immune to heartache, didn’t escape the impact of Season 1 of Matlock without a scratch, as she ended her open relationship with Kira (Piper Curda), her cherished IT tech. Although she achieved victory in court for the first time and her mentor has become a partner at Jacobson Moore, the lingering absence of this romantic bond could potentially cause turmoil if Sarah allows herself some respite from work instead of constantly pushing herself to distraction.

Will Simone’s Schemes Clash With Matty’s Quest For Justice?
It’s bad having one person secretly investigating at your workplace, but twice is even worse. As Matty delves deeper into the Wellbrexa mystery, Simone plans to expose Sarah’s covert activities that began during Matlock’s stressful first season and led to a murder case. Meanwhile, Matty keeps searching for dirt on Sarah, unaware that she might be uncovering Madeline Matlock’s secret investigations as well. If Olympia turns against Matty, this could form another dangerous partnership that may disrupt the entire Jacobson Moore firm.

How Much Of Julian Are We Going To See In Season 2?
In my earlier predictions for the final season of Matlock, I speculated that if Julian managed to clear his name of any wrongdoing, his defeat in the partner race might still lead him to leave. However, a recent statement from showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman in Entertainment Weekly has led me to doubt this assumption now. She mentioned:
I’m genuinely thrilled about the fresh collaborations! To our surprise, we’ve discovered some truly entertaining content for Billy and Julian, which has taken us on an intriguing journey.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but wonder just how much screen time Julian is going to get now that he’s sticking around. Regarding Jason Ritter’s character in the fresh Max original series Lanterns, it leaves me pondering about the connection between him and Julian. Additionally, I find myself curious about why Billy and Julian are spending time together, and could there potentially be an episode that delves into their romantic lives, akin to a “wingman” scenario? Most significantly, what does this imply about Olympia’s actions following their encounter at the safe deposit box? The plot thickens with each new piece of information!

Will Melanie Lynskey Finally Get Her Guest Starring Role?
Actress Melanie Lynskey, famous for her roles, expresses interest in appearing as a guest star on the show “Matlock.” In essence, she wants to join the cast, and I believe this could very well become a reality.
As Season 2 prepares to delve into numerous engaging storylines within the legal realm of New York, there’s no telling who the star from “Beautiful Creatures” might portray next. It could even be amusing if she lands the role of a possible love interest for her real-life spouse, Jason Ritter, given that his character, Julian, is now divorced.
And here they are: my seven primary questions regarding where the storyline for Matlock Season 2 might be going next. I suspect I could generate numerous additional queries if I delved deeper into the subject, but for now, it seems prudent to put these case investigations aside and take a break to rejuvenate myself.
This version maintains the original’s informal tone while using slightly different wording to provide a fresh perspective without altering the meaning significantly.
If any unexpected events come up during the break or fresh insights are gained by re-watching episodes on Paramount+, you can count on the court being back in session quicker than it takes to properly spell “Wellbrexa.” (Apologies for any previous confusion, everyone.)
