In the latest Nintendo Switch 2 presentation, Nintendo unveiled “Mario Kart World”, the upcoming addition to their popular kart racing series. Upon announcement, a sneak peek at some of the game’s playable characters was given. Most familiar faces from the franchise like Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Toad, Koopa Troopa, Peach, and Donkey Kong appear set to return. Yet, some unforeseen revelations left many avid gamers buzzing with anticipation.
In the new game Mario Kart World, some of the least expected characters, who are typically sidekicks or adversaries from different Mario adventures, have garnered significant attention, even though they weren’t previously well-known for their performances in their respective games. Among these new additions, Moo-Moo, the adorable smiling cow from the tracks Moo Moo Farm (in Mario Kart 64) and Moo Moo Meadows (in Mario Kart Wii), has been generating a lot of buzz. It appears that any character from the extensive Mario series could potentially make a comeback in the upcoming racing game.
In the current lineup for Mario Kart World, several characters have been confirmed. Yet, there’s an array of additional characters that seem perfectly suited for the eagerly awaited Nintendo Switch 2 edition of this game. Here are seven characters that deserve a spot on the roster:
In this version, I tried to keep the original meaning but made it more conversational and easier to read.
Diddy Kong (Donkey Kong Country – SNES)
One notable omission in the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation of Mario Kart World was the absence of Donkey Kong’s nephew, who has previously been a part of the Mario Kart series, such as in Mario Kart: Double Dash, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart Tour, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. He also starred in his own racing game, Diddy Kong Racing.
Diddy Kong seems like the perfect fit for the Mario Kart universe, given his popularity and racing background. It’s quite logical, wouldn’t you agree?
King Watinga (Mario Paint – SNES)
In a simpler context, King Watinga was initially found in the mini-game called “Gnat Attack,” which was part of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) game titled “Mario Paint.” For those who may not be familiar, this mini-game required players to use the mouse accessory that came with the SNES to swat at tiny insects known as gnats. The primary antagonist in this mini-game was a large robotic bug named King Watinga.
There’s an unusual excitement among Nintendo fans about the potential for Mario Paint, a classic game, to appear on the Nintendo Switch 2 due to its rumored mouse functionality. If this pixelated creation suite does indeed make its way onto the upcoming console, it would be quite exciting to see a character from Mario Paint in what appears to be the biggest game planned for the platform.
Mips (Super Mario 64 – Nintendo 64)
Players of the Nintendo 64 console might not recognize them by name, but they are definitely acquainted with Mips. This mischievous yellow rabbit can be found lurking in the basement of Princess Peach’s Castle in Super Mario 64. By catching him, Mario gains a Power Star. It’s a tiny detail that leaves a lasting impression on anyone who played this groundbreaking 3D platformer.
Mips aligns with the charm of characters such as Moo-Moo or Pianta. It’s a character that may have a minor role, yet it leaves an enduring impression on the players.
Funky Kong (Donkey Kong Country – SNES)
In Mario Kart World, some fresh and intriguing mechanisms have been introduced that significantly modify the way players navigate tracks. Among these, you might have noticed the grinding and wall-riding techniques. Traditionally, karts haven’t been associated with intense shredding, but skateboards certainly are. Interestingly, there is one Nintendo character who excels at shredding: Funky Kong.
Picture Funky Kong whizzing by on an electric skateboard instead of a kart as he navigates through the fresh tracks of Mario Kart World. That’d be quite the spectacle! Given his background in the Mario Kart series, Funky Kong is undoubtedly another great addition to the upcoming game, further enhancing its cool factor.
Mouser (Super Mario Bros. 2 – NES)
Similar to Birdo, Mouser is frequently encountered as a boss in the classic Nintendo game “Super Mario Bros. 2”. While Mouser may not be as well-known as a Goomba, they share similarities with some of the latest additions. What’s more, Mouser is quite an appealing character, sporting sunglasses and a cool demeanor. Who wouldn’t want to control this edgy mouse in a game?
Il Piantissimo (Super Mario Sunshine – GameCube)
It’s often considered that “Super Mario Sunshine” ranks as the least favored among the Mario series’ 3D platform games. However, this perspective overlooks one truly cool character that the Mario universe gained from this GameCube release – Il Piantissimo.
In the game “Super Mario Sunshine,” there’s a character named Il Piantissimo who pretends to be one of the vibrant inhabitants of Isle Delfino, known as Piantas. Throughout the game, Mario challenges Il Piantissimo in a race for Shine Sprites, much like Koopa the Quick from “Super Mario 64.” Towards the end, a photo is displayed showing Il Piantissimo gazing at the magic paintbrush that was previously wielded by Bowser Jr. Therefore, we’re left wondering what became of Isle Delfino’s swiftest resident after the game ends.
It’s nice to think that Il Piantissimo might have become a famous kart driver, as he would certainly make a fine addition to the roster of Mario Kart World. So far, he hasn’t appeared much beyond Super Mario Sunshine. Perhaps it’s finally his time to earn the title of the fastest racer globally.
Fox McCloud (Star Fox – SNES)
In an unexpected move, Mario Kart 8 incorporated downloadable content for the first time ever. This update brought characters and courses from various Nintendo universes beyond the Mushroom Kingdom into play. For instance, players could control Isabelle from Animal Crossing and Link from The Legend of Zelda within the popular Nintendo Switch title. Additionally, it showcased a track from its sibling racing series, F-Zero. It’s likely that Mario Kart World will eventually introduce guest characters too, and who would be more fitting to initiate this than Fox McCloud from Star Fox.
The Star Fox series has been missing from the scene for approximately 9 years now, since the release of Star Fox Zero on the Wii U. Although some characters made appearances in the multiplayer brawler Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch, this doesn’t quite quench the desire that Star Fox fans have for a new installment in the series. Even if Fox McCloud were to join the roster of racers in Mario Kart World, it might only serve as a temporary fix rather than a full-fledged sequel. However, it could offer some relief to those eagerly waiting for a new Star Fox title. And let’s not forget how exciting it would be to see an Arwing-inspired kart in the game! Here’s hoping that Nintendo decides to revive one of their most popular franchises within Mario Kart World.
