Batman, arguably the most renowned superhero in existence, is widely recognized as The World’s Greatest Detective and a formidable force against many powerful adversaries. With adequate preparation, he has the potential to overcome almost any opponent, making it challenging to envision his defeat. Over the course of time, Batman has successfully vanquished numerous highly skilled villains, solidifying his position as the cream of the crop, leaving few in doubt that he stands atop the superhero hierarchy.
However, it’s important to remember that Batman isn’t invulnerable. Over time, various DC antagonists have managed to defeat Gotham’s top hero, outsmarting Batman in numerous ways. Here are 7 DC villains who have scored some remarkable victories against the Dark Knight, demonstrating that he is not infallible despite his strength and skill.
The Joker
One of Batman’s most recognized adversaries is none other than The Joker. This iconic supervillain ranks among the most popular villains in the history of comics. The ongoing conflict between Batman and The Joker has led them both into some very grim territories, with Batman often struggling to resist crossing the line and taking the life of the Clown Prince of Crime. However, despite these struggles, Batman usually comes out on top against his arch-nemesis. There have been instances where The Joker has managed to best his nemesis; one such occasion is the 2014 storyline called “Batman: Endgame.
In the novel “Endgame” penned by Scott Snyder, the Joker employed his own deadly toxin to provoke the Justice League into attacking Batman and relentlessly harassing him. Over time, he managed to infiltrate the Batcave, setting the stage for a fierce confrontation between the two adversaries. This battle left both combatants severely damaged, but due to a mysterious liquid beneath the Batcave that resurrected them, it can be considered one of the Joker’s most ruthless victories against Batman.
The Riddler
For quite some time, The Riddler and Batman have found themselves at odds. Unlike other adversaries, The Riddler isn’t typically a formidable physical opponent for Batman; however, creators have made him more physically imposing in recent years. Yet, it’s his intelligence that truly poses a challenge to the Caped Crusader. The Riddler is always striving to outwit Batman and has succeeded on numerous occasions. His most significant triumph over Batman didn’t involve defeating him physically but instead manipulating the Dark Knight like a chess piece.
As a movie enthusiast who’s always got a soft spot for the Dark Knight, I’d rephrase it like this: In the captivating tale of Batman titled “Hush,” crafted by Jeph Loeb, The Riddler was the cunning puppeteer. He teamed up with Tommy Elliott and leveraged his influence within Gotham’s criminal underworld to aid Hush in his relentless assault on Bruce Wayne. Over time, The Riddler managed to crack Batman’s secret identity, keeping him on edge until the very end of their game. Although Batman eventually unmasked The Riddler as the mastermind, the fact that he remained hidden for so long and learned Batman’s true identity is one of the most devastating blows our hero has ever faced. Temporarily forgetting Batman’s identity due to a brain injury, The Riddler held a secret weapon that many other Batman villains can only dream of possessing.
Bane
In the 1993 storyline “Knightfall,” Bane rose to prominence among Batman’s most formidable adversaries by defeating the Caped Crusader. This was achieved when he attacked Gotham, breaching Arkham Asylum and releasing a multitude of villains throughout the city. Batman was pushed to his limits as he chased down each villain, but eventually, Bane overpowered him, inflicting an injury that left Batman paralyzed. This incident led Azrael to take up the mantle of Batman, while Bruce Wayne temporarily departed Gotham in search of a cure for his incapacitating wound.
In the eyes of many, Bane’s first victory over Batman is hailed as his greatest, but his second encounter in Tom King’s “Batman” series, particularly during the “City of Bane” arc, presents a more compelling case for some. Here, Bane, aiming to demonstrate his strategic brilliance, targeted Batman. Unbeknownst to Batman, everything he experienced was orchestrated by Bane as part of a master plan to conquer and expel him from Gotham City. This intricate plot enlisted several of Batman’s most formidable adversaries. The chilling climax saw Bane taking the life of Alfred, Batman’s loyal butler. These encounters strongly suggest that Bane could very well be Batman’s most dangerous and formidable adversary.
Darkseid
In many aspects, Darkseid is often seen as the most formidable antagonist across the DC Multiverse, and rightfully so. Known as the Personification of Evil, this multiversal entity’s sole ambition is the absolute subjugation of the entire multiverse. Compared to Batman, he transcends typical villain categories, but given Batman’s role in the Justice League, their encounters are not uncommon. In one instance set in an alternate future where Darkseid seized control of Earth, Batman managed to deceive him by disguising himself as DeSaad, Darkseid’s chief tormentor, which enabled the remaining members of the League to launch a surprise attack on Darkseid. Regrettably, in that altered timeline, Darkseid ended up taking Batman’s life.
In the primary universe, Darkseid obtained the Anti-Life Equation and launched an attack on Earth. His intention was to capture Batman, intending to use replicas of him as shock troops for his armies. However, Batman managed to break free and confronted the embodiment of evil, ready to fire a bullet made of radium, an element capable of killing gods, which he had discovered in Orion’s corpse. Darkseid employed the Omega Effect before Batman could pull the trigger, sending the hero hurtling back through time, leading many to believe he was no more. In reality, this was all part of Darkseid’s plan for revenge. A demon born from Darkseid’s power chased after Batman, amassing Omega energy as he moved forward in time. The goal was for the demon to reach the present and detonate, causing a catastrophic explosion that would destroy the multiverse, avenging Darkseid’s defeat. Fortunately, Batman and Tim Drake were able to thwart this impending disaster.
The Orghams
The Oghram lineage is a long-standing one, having interacted with Ra’s al Ghul centuries ago. Through some mysterious means, the family members Arzen and Dariah have achieved a form of eternal life and amassed immense wealth. They have mastered magic and control a device known as Thelemus Engine, capable of shaping reality. Their wealth gave them prominence in Gotham’s early history, leading to confrontations with one of Batman’s ancestors. In time, they chose to return to the city, aiming to reclaim what they consider their rightful possessions.
In a clever twist, the adversary confronted Batman, managing to outsmart him at every juncture. Utilizing their substantial resources, they recruited Gotham’s criminal masterminds to assail Batman. Their loyal servants – Gael Tenclaw, the werewolf; Shavhod Erhad, the serpent priestess; and Neang Modhram, the flesh sculptor – kept Batman on edge. With the Thelemus Engine, they turned Gotham’s citizens against Batman, eventually capturing him for a public execution. All this while Batman fought a demon implanted in his psyche by them. Catwoman and her allies managed to free Batman from the city, handing control over to the Orghams. Although Batman reclaimed the city, the Orghams were one of the few villains who temporarily seized Gotham from the Dark Knight.
Ra’s al Ghul
For hundreds of years, Ra’s al Ghul has been working covertly across the globe, accumulating immense power that rivals many nations. As the leader of the League of Assassins, he’s had an unspoken impact on world events. Utilizing the Lazarus Pits to extend his life, al Ghul is one of Batman’s most intellectually formidable adversaries. He’s a skilled tactician and fighter, frequently putting Batman to the test in various ways. Notably, he has even managed to outsmart and defeat the Dark Knight.
In an intense duel involving swords, Ra’s al Ghul managed to slay Batman, leveraging his extensive knowledge accumulated over centuries with bladed weapons. However, Talia al Ghul, Ra’s daughter who harbored feelings for Batman, brought him back to life using a Lazarus Pit. This marked the first encounter between Batman and Ra’s al Ghul, an experience that forever instilled in the Dark Knight the gravity of facing the Demon’s Head, fully aware of the villain’s formidable abilities.
Failsafe
In Chip Zdarsky’s 2022 “Batman” series, a character named Failsafe was introduced as one of Batman’s own creations. Known for his meticulous planning, Batman had devised strategies to handle the Justice League if their alliance went awry, and also to counteract himself in case his mind was ever compromised – particularly the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh, an alternate persona that could free him from mental manipulation. Zur-En-Arrh then developed Failsafe, a robot that merged all of Batman’s anti-metahuman technology with his data on defeating every adversary he had ever faced. Essentially invincible, Failsafe would only be activated if Batman were to take a life.
In this rephrased version, the narrative goes like this: Upon being falsely accused of causing a death, Batman found himself pursued by Failsafe – an artificial intelligence entity. This robot relentlessly attacked Batman’s associates, whether they were part of his Bat-Family or Justice League comrades, forcing Batman to flee. During their frequent encounters, Failsafe came close to killing Batman on several occasions and eventually led to a dramatic showdown that ended with the robot hurling Batman into another dimension. Batman eventually managed to return and vanquish the robot, but not before it accomplished something few others have – defeating Batman in nearly every aspect and cementing its place as one of his most formidable adversaries.
