7 Frustrating Items Mario Kart 9 Must Leave Behind for a Better Racing Experience!

At long last, here it is – Mario Kart 9 has been unveiled hand-in-hand with the Nintendo Switch 2. Fans are eagerly anticipating fresh tracks, new characters, and of course, novel items. Yet, even as we look forward to the new, there’s a strong likelihood that many classic items from previous games will make a comeback in Mario Kart 9. The Banana, Green Shell, Red Shell, and Spiny Shell are likely candidates for this return. However, certain Mario Kart items have lost their charm and should be phased out for good. These items bring nothing but annoyance and potential strife among friends, so Nintendo ought to exercise caution when deciding which items they include in the next installment.

Here are the seven items Nintendo needs to exclude from Mario Kart 9.

Blooper

The Blooper isn’t enjoyed by many. It lacks enjoyment factor and efficiency in its intended purpose. Its ink splashes are unpredictable, sometimes not obstructing enough of the screen to impede racers effectively. Moreover, it only affects players, leaving AI racers unaffected. If Nintendo wishes to retain the Blooper due to its iconic status, they could modify it to scatter ink splotches on the track instead. These splotches could slow down other drivers or even the player if driven through. They could have a timer and vanish after a specified duration, unlike the current Blooper effect which lasts indefinitely.

Coin

One of the most frustrating situations in collecting an item box in games like Mario Kart 8 is receiving a Coin, even though Coins are useful, they can be found scattered on the track by driving over them. It seemed unnecessary for the developers to make Coins an item since they already exist as pickups during the race. Nothing is more irritating than getting a Coin when you’re leading the race. Instead, items like Bananas or Green Shells would be more beneficial because they can be utilized as shields against Red Shells and other hazardous items. Therefore, Coins should definitely be removed from Mario Kart 9 and remain only as track pickups instead.

Bullet Bill

In the game Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Bullet Bill stands out as one of the top catch-up items; however, it detracts from the enjoyment. Unlike Stars or Mushrooms, with Bullet Bill, the outcome is predetermined. Using course knowledge, shortcuts, and clever grass cuts can be exciting ways to gain an edge over opponents when using Star or Mushroom items. Conversely, using a Bullet Bill isn’t as tactical or enjoyable since it only propels you along a predictable path. Removing player control is generally not beneficial, even if it temporarily boosts their position in the game.

Boo

In the game Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Boo is another element that can dampen the enjoyment. Although snatching an item from another player may seem advantageous, a more beneficial choice would be to opt for a different item from the box instead. While it’s exciting to obstruct another player and take their item, the time spent waiting for an item box, activating Boo, waiting for the stolen item to activate, and then having your own item taken can be critical moments where you might get hit by a shell or miss a crucial shortcut. The stealth of Boo is appealing, but it doesn’t make up for its slowness and lack of interaction compared to other items in the game.

Star

In the world of Mario Kart, the Star is a renowned and iconic element, appearing not only in Mario Kart games but also in other Mario titles as well. However, its appearance in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe left players feeling somewhat disappointed. The duration it lasts is exceedingly brief, and the speed boost it provides is minimal compared to other items like a Mushroom. Yet, instead of eliminating the Star from Mario Kart 9, it should be enhanced, or “buffed”. In numerous Mario games, the Star has been positioned as the second most powerful item, so for the next Mario Kart installment, it’s crucial that the Star feels significant and impactful.

Crazy 8

It’s quite improbable that Crazy 8 will make a comeback in Mario Kart 9, given it has been a significant item in both Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Despite its role as a signature item, it didn’t really stand out, so letting it go won’t be a major loss. Since Mario Kart 9 should introduce a new, unique item, it needs to be more influential than Crazy 8 was. Having individual instances of the items was enjoyable, but overall there were superior options available.

Boomerang

The Boomerang itself isn’t problematic, but it seems like using three Green Shells with some disadvantages. Although it can strike two enemies in one toss, its challenging control and slow pace make it more difficult. In comparison, a Green Shell’s bounce offers multiple chances to hit a target after the initial miss, whereas the Boomerang simply returns.

In simpler terms, it’s possible that Mario Kart 9 could introduce fresh items and reintroduce old ones, but let’s cross our fingers they either get ditched or improved. Given the wide array of items in the Mario series, Nintendo has a great opportunity to swap out dull options for more enjoyable ones.
