Due to Marvel Comics adaptations, particularly those with box office hits like The Dark Knight sequels, dominating the first weeks of May and July (often summer), it’s common to associate these months with the release of comic book movies. However, with the increasing number of such titles over the past 20 years, even four summer months can’t hold all the adaptations. Nowadays, you can find a significant comic book movie blockbuster almost every month of the year, even in February.
Since 2016, February has transformed from a secondary location for generic films to a prime spot for groundbreaking comic book movies that defy traditional norms. With numerous titles premiering during this period, seven distinct comic book films have significantly impacted the box office in February. The outcomes varied, with some being successful and others not, but their influence was undeniable. These seven comic book productions demonstrated that May and July are not the only months where these movies can make a lasting impact on popular culture.
Daredevil
Back in February 2003, the comic book movie scene was drastically different. “Daredevil,” starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, hit screens just nine months after the original “Spider-Man.” Despite this, the Daredevil film couldn’t compare to Spider-Man’s success. Yet, its impressive $40.3 million three-day opening was a record-breaking February debut at that time, trailing only 2001’s “Hannibal.” In those early days of Marvel Comics movie adaptations, “Daredevil” paved the way for February to become a profitable niche for these films. Remarkably, this film, which is often criticized by the public today, managed to achieve such feats.
Ghost Rider
The first standalone Ghost Rider film starring Nicolas Cage premiered during President’s Day weekend in 2007, a slot that had previously worked well for Daredevil four years prior. Despite not being highly regarded nowadays, the Ghost Rider movie actually performed decently at its initial release, earning $45.38 million over its first three days – the third-highest domestic opening for February at that time. This strong start confirmed that Daredevil’s success wasn’t a one-off; comic book movies could indeed be profitable during February.
Kingsman: The Secret Service
Initially scheduled to premiere in domestic theaters during the last weekend of October 2014, the first film adaptation of Mark Millar’s Kingsman comics, Kingsman: The Secret Service, was later postponed to President’s Day weekend 2015. This delay proved beneficial for the project as it avoided competing with the third weekend of Interstellar in its original 2014 slot. Instead, Kingsman stood alone as the main action blockbuster during February 2015. Moreover, its impressive box office earnings demonstrated that not only PG-13 comic book movies but also R-rated ones could be successful in the early weeks of a year.
Deadpool
Among comic book movies, none arguably reshaped the February box office as significantly as Deadpool. Unlike earlier films like Daredevil and Ghost Rider, this first solo outing for the wise-cracking anti-hero didn’t merely perform well for a February release. Instead, it smashed expectations with a $134.4 million domestic debut that would have been impressive in the traditionally busy months of May or July. Staggeringly surpassing all previous domestic opening weekends for X-Men films, Deadpool set new standards for what a February blockbuster could achieve. Remarkably, this record-breaking opening would not hold the title of the biggest February opening weekend in history for long.
The LEGO Batman Movie
Following the massive success of The LEGO Movie in 2014, it was only natural that more sequels and spinoffs would follow. In February 2017, The LEGO Batman Movie joined the ranks, proving to be another box office sensation. At its debut, it ranked as the ninth-largest February opening weekend on record, and it held the title for the largest non-Deadpool comic book movie February release. Those who considered Daredevil from 14 years prior to be an anomaly had to reconsider their views when The LEGO Batman Movie was released, as it established February as a prime month for comic book movies to debut.
Black Panther
In the crowded field of comic book movies released in February, none have managed to surpass the success of Black Panther. Directed by Ryan Coogler, this film grossed an astounding $202 million within its first three days of release in 2018. This was a previously unimaginable sum for a February movie to earn during its entire domestic run, let alone in just the opening weekend. Typically, movies like Daredevil and Kingsman have prospered in February due to a lack of major competitors. However, Black Panther was an unprecedented cultural phenomenon that would have thrived regardless of where it premiered. Essentially, February had evolved into a prime platform for blockbuster debuts with the emergence of a cinematic monarch such as Black Panther.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
The movie “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is the major February release in the comic book genre that made a significant impact on this month’s box office trends. At first glance, its $100 million plus three-day opening (only the third time such a figure has been reached in February) would suggest cause for celebration. However, “Quantumania” experienced a massive 69.8% drop in its second week, which is one of the steepest declines for a Marvel Studios movie at that point. Previously, it seemed that a comic book film with a strong February debut would naturally maintain good performance afterwards. But “Quantumania” has shattered that assumption forever. Even February’s comic book films were not immune to poor audience response when released during a month with fewer competing blockbusters compared to, say, May or July.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is now streaming on Disney+.
