In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, when our heroic team, the Avengers, unite, they’re almost invincible. They swiftly defeat Loki and his Chitauri forces in The Avengers, and then battle Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Despite Ultron being tough, the Avengers once again foil his attempt to plunge Earth back into the Stone Age. Even with some original members retiring and a new team emerging, it seems like they won’t skip a beat with powerful additions like Scarlet Witch and Vision on board. However, the Avengers soon discover that their challenges extend beyond just physical ones.
In “Captain America: Civil War”, the team confronts a sinister scheme orchestrated by Helmut Zemo, a vengeful Sokovian with a deep-seated grudge against the Avengers due to the destruction of his homeland. By gathering sufficient intel, Zemo manages to sow discord among the Avengers and significantly alters the trajectory of the Marvel Cinematic Universe heading into “Avengers: Infinity War”. Had any of these Marvel heroes been part of the “Civil War”, they likely would have unraveled Zemo’s scheme more promptly.
1) Professor X
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I must say that the mastermind known as Zemo skillfully kept his identity under wraps in the epic saga, Civil War. He chose to unveil himself only when Bucky had been apprehended by the government. At this critical juncture, he set his malevolent scheme into motion at full throttle. However, if Professor X were present in that very location, Zemo’s nefarious plot might have taken a different turn. His telepathic powers could have given the Avengers an advantageous edge, perhaps preventing the capture of Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier.
There would still be uncertainties and complications to navigate, but with X on their side, Zemo’s sinister actions might never have reached the devastating climax they did. The fateful moment when Tony Stark witnessed the video of his parents’ demise would remain a distant threat, veiled by the protective powers of Professor X.
2) Doctor Strange
In virtually any circumstance, Doctor Strange’s Time Stone is useful, but it’s his sharp intellect that truly qualifies him to outmaneuver Zemo. During the Civil War, the hero might abstain from siding with either faction and instead observe carefully. This deliberation would eventually point him towards Zemo, whom he could effortlessly defeat using his magical powers, thanks to his brainstorming session.
3) Mister Fantastic
Similar to Doctor Strange, Reed Richards’ intelligence consistently lends a hand. He might choose a side at first, but once he’s gathered all the information, he would persuade Tony to make the right decision and step back. Mr. Fantastic could then strategize a way to apprehend Zemo without putting Avengers who are on the verge of fighting each other in harm’s way.
4) Jean Grey
Jean Grey possesses remarkable telepathic powers, a point of debate suggesting she might surpass her mentor, Professor X, in strength. Regardless, she has the capacity to delve into Zemo’s mind and uncover all details of his plan. Moreover, due to her other exceptional mutant abilities, she would not require any assistance to vanquish him.
5) Daredevil
In a confrontation between Zemo and Bucky during “Civil War”, Daredevil’s unique ability comes into play: he can detect deceit. By recognizing if Zemo was being dishonest, Daredevil could have anticipated his actions, preventing him from reading enough critical words in the Hydra book to reactivate the Winter Soldier.
6) Quicksilver
Regrettably, Pietro Maximoff perishes during the battle in Sokovia in Age of Ultron. If he had survived, he could’ve wrapped up the fight with Zemo more swiftly, as he could have scouted the Siberian base beforehand and apprehended the villain without any physical altercation. Consequently, the Avengers might have discovered the incriminating video, but in a different context, perhaps they would have exercised more restraint.
7) Cable
Cable’s ability to travel through time gives him a strong advantage over Zemo. By going back before Zemo takes action, he can warn the Avengers about what’s coming up, including the disastrous battle with Thanos that results in their division. With this advance knowledge, Earth’s powerful team of heroes could strategize and make informed decisions. They could apprehend Zemo at an opportune moment and address their internal conflicts at their own pace.
