7 Men Charged in $100 Million Jewelry Heist, Largest in U.S. History

It looks like there may be a new Ocean’s 7.

7 individuals have been accused of involvement in a 2022 robbery, which federal authorities classified as “the most significant jewelry theft ever recorded in the United States,” as detailed in a press statement issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California on June 17th.

In the report, the individuals named as Carlos Victor Mestanza Cercado (aged 31), Jazael Padilla Resto (36), Pablo Raul Lugo Larroig (41), Victor Hugo Valencia Solorzano (60), Jorge Enrique Alban (33), Jeson Nelon Presilla Flores (42), and Eduardo Macias Ibarra (36) stand accused of orchestrating a theft valued at nearly $100 million, which includes gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and luxury watches from an armored vehicle in July 2022.

In question, a truck was transporting approximately 73 bags filled with millions of dollars worth of jewelry from an international jewelry show in San Mateo, California. According to the prosecutors, a group of individuals trailed this vehicle for roughly 300 miles before they intercepted it in Lebec, California, and made off with 24 bags, which the victims claim to be worth around $100 million.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office hasn’t revealed in their statement how the suspects supposedly obtained the truck, but they did share that some of the stolen jewels have been found following the execution of search warrants on June 16.

After the robbery, each of the seven individuals was charged with two offenses related to conspiring to steal goods transported between states or countries, as well as stealing such goods. This information comes from a recent announcement.

Besides being accused for their roles in it, Mestanza, Padilla, Lugo, Valencia, and Alban were also indicted on two charges related to planning to disrupt business activities through robbery (conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery) and actually carrying out such disruption (interference with commerce by robbery). Furthermore, they faced additional charges for stealing goods transported between states or countries (theft from interstate and foreign shipment).

In case they are found guilty, Mestanza, Padilla, Lugo, Valencia, and Alban might spend up to 20 years behind bars for every robbery allegation. Notably, all seven suspects could be imprisoned for a maximum of five years for the conspiracy to steal charge, and individually face ten years in federal prison for each theft accusation.

NBC News was unable to confirm if they have lawyers who can speak on their behalf.
