As a cinephile with a penchant for time-bending narratives and a soft spot for Tom Cruise, I must say that this list of films is truly a treasure trove. Each title offers a unique perspective on the concept of time travel, from the gripping suspense of Source Code to the mind-bending complexities of Predestination.
This week, the popular sci-fi action movie “Edge of Tomorrow,” starring Tom Cruise, made its debut on Netflix and quickly attracted a fresh wave of viewers, climbing up Netflix’s Top 10 list. First released in 2014, the film tells the story of Major William Cage, who is compelled to battle an alien race that has taken over much of Europe. In this struggle, he gets trapped in a time loop where he fights, dies, and respawns, attempting to vanquish these invaders each time.
The movie directed by Doug Liman, starring Emily Blunt, has sparked discussions about a follow-up for quite some time now among both its audience and the team behind it. Yet, as of now, no sequel has been released. But don’t fret if you’re currently streaming ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ on Netflix and seeking more of the same intrigue; there are numerous films with comparable themes that are equally captivating and worthy of your attention. Therefore, for those eagerly anticipating a sequel to ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ (and in the meantime), here’s our recommended list of movies you might find enticing to watch.
1. Tenet
2020’s movie “Tenet” doesn’t feature actual aliens, but rather, it delves deeply into the ideas of time and time travel. In this Christopher Nolan-directed thriller, John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh star. The plot follows a former CIA agent who is enlisted by a clandestine organization to avert World War III. To accomplish this mission, he traverses time, breaking the rules of nature in the process.
2. The Tomorrow War
Among all the films on this list, “The Tomorrow War” (2021) starring Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, and J.K. Simmons might be one of the most akin to “Edge of Tomorrow.” The plot revolves around a family man, played by Pratt, who is drafted to battle invading aliens. Here’s an intriguing twist: the war he is drafted for takes place in the future, decades from his current time. The alien and time elements of the movie create a similar feel as “Edge of Tomorrow,” but it’s the human aspects that make “The Tomorrow War” an engaging watch post-“Edge of Tomorrow.” Furthermore, there are rumors that a sequel to “The Tomorrow War” is being developed at Amazon.
3. Looper
In the 2012 movie “Looper”, the protagonist, Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), serves as an assassin, or a “looper”, who is sent from the future by a criminal organization to eliminate targets via time travel. An intriguing twist in this film is that one of his associates is Old Joe, portrayed by Bruce Willis, who happens to be Joe’s older self. Another delightful aspect that makes it worth watching after “Edge of Tomorrow” is the presence of Emily Blunt in the cast as well.
4. Source Code
One way to rephrase that would be: The idea of a time loop makes 2011’s Source Code an excellent movie after watching Edge of Tomorrow. In this film, Jake Gyllenhaal plays U.S. Army Captain Colter Stevens, who is assigned to infiltrate a virtual reality simulation of an eight-minute train bombing to uncover the terrorist’s identity. Throughout the movie, Stevens grapples with understanding the mechanics of this kind of “time travel” and eventually makes a shocking revelation.
5. Oblivion
This list really wouldn’t be complete without another Tom Cruise-starring film and that’s a big reason we’ve chosen 2013’s Oblivion. In addition to Cruise, the film stars Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Melissa Leo. Set in 2077, the film takes place on Earth as ravaged by an alien war and sees a maintenance tech about to complete his. mission when he finds a woman who survived a space ship crash. It’s a discovery that leads the tech to discover that everything he knows may in fact be a lie.
6. Predestination
2014’s “Predestination” earns its spot on our list due to the intriguing time travel themes found in Robert A. Heinlein’s short story “All You Zombies”. This captivating film, featuring Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook, and Noah Taylor, centers around a temporal agent as he embarks on his last journey through time, aiming to prevent a villain from executing a deadly attack that will claim many lives. The movie is filled with intricate twists and turns, offering an engaging narrative about identity, making it an enjoyable viewing experience.
7. Happy Death Day
We bet you weren’t expecting a slasher film to end up on this list, were you? 2017’s Happy Death Day may not be sci-fi and it may not have aliens, but it does have a time loop and it’s darkly funny and it makes for a great addition to any watch after End of Tomorrow. Starring Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard, the film follows college student Tree Gelbman who is murdered the night of her birthday but ends up in a really messed up Groundhog’s Day-esque time loop where she relives the day over and over, prompting her to find her killer and stop her own death.
