7 Must-Watch Movies for Sinners Fans

It’s no surprise that many people are eager to watch Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, considering it outperformed The Minecraft Movie at the box office this weekend. The film, a captivating vampire tale, has garnered rave reviews and impressive earnings, and those who see it should not miss the chance to explore more of the same genre. Here are some movies that fans of Sinners might enjoy after leaving the theater. Some feature members of the cast, one is a film directed by Coogler himself, and others share a similar tone. What ties them together is their connection to the Michael B. Jordan (twice) movie in some way or another.

Movies not strictly limited to vampire genres can complement “Sinners,” although we haven’t ruled out nocturnal creature films altogether. Here are some suggestions for movies to watch following “Sinners.

Fright Night

In my opinion, before it gained recognition through a less celebrated remake featuring Colin Farrell, the original ‘Fright Night’ from Tom Holland was simply an adored cult classic from the ’80s. It masterfully blends elements of traditional horror tributes, humor, and adolescent growth stories. This movie excels on various levels. The narrative revolves around Charlie Brewster, a teenage film enthusiast who has only one friend, a girlfriend, and a single mom. When the enigmatic Jerry Dandridge moves in next door, I start to question his true nature – I suspect he’s something otherworldly. To vanquish him, we seek help from TV host and self-declared vampire hunter Peter Vincent. Unfortunately for me, Vincent turns out to be more of a fraud than a hero.

The film, too, benefits significantly from its talented cast. William Ragsdale and Amanda Bearse play off each other exceptionally well in the main roles, while Stephen Geoffreys is unforgettable as “Evil” Ed Thompson. However, it’s Chris Sarandon who steals the show with his captivating portrayal of the neighboring vampire.

Creed

Prior to Ryan Coogler earning the MCU (and the broader comic book film genre) its first Academy Award nomination for Best Picture with Black Panther, he was rejuvenating the inactive Rocky series with the outstanding movie, Creed. The film exceeded expectations and became the clear second-best installment of the entire franchise. In this film, Michael B. Jordan (who has been a part of every Coogler production) plays Adonis Johnson, the son of the deceased Apollo Creed, who was killed in the ring by Ivan Drago before he was even born. Desiring a mentor to help him become a champion, he turns to Rocky Balboa for guidance.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’d like to extend my recommendations for the brilliant works of director Ryan Coogler. Not only does his latest masterpiece captivate me, but his earlier films, such as “Fruitvale Station,” “Black Panther,” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” have left an indelible impression on me. There’s a certain magic in everything he creates; it seems as though he can turn anything into gold.

Companion

Much like how the movie “Sinners” combines horror and action, the film “Companion” merges science fiction and thriller elements. The intricate plot revolves around Iris and Josh, a young couple in their twenties, who visit a secluded cabin with Josh’s friends for a weekend getaway. However, things take a dark turn when one of the friend’s partners attacks Iris. In retaliation, she kills him. As the rest of the group restrains her, they discover that Iris is not what she seems – she is actually a companion robot, and the murder was orchestrated as part of a larger scheme.

The captivating plot of “Companion” keeps viewers hooked from start to finish in 2025, showcasing exceptional performance by Sophie Thatcher. Although Quaid, Megan Suri, and Harvey Guillén from “What We Do in the Shadows” deliver impressive performances, it’s clear that this film truly belongs to Thatcher. As awards season approaches, her performance deserves recognition.

Prey

The thrilling action-horror movie titled Prey has revitalized the Predator series. Actress Amber Midthunder from Novocaine delivers a standout performance as Naru, a young Comanche woman often overlooked by her tribe in favor of her brother. However, she demonstrates equal hunting prowess, and this skill will be showcased when not only French fur traders arrive but also a high-tech Yautja hunter.

The movie “Prey” shares a resemblance with “Creed” in the sense that it wasn’t a sequel many anticipated, yet surprisingly turned out to be the second-best installment of its series. Like 10 Cloverfield Lane’s Dan Trachtenberg, this filmmaker once again demonstrates his knack for creating engaging, thought-provoking science fiction films. However, it’s Midthunder’s outstanding performance as Naru that truly makes this film stand out, showcasing her talent as a captivating newcomer to the genre.

The Lost Boys

As a cinephile, I must confess that among the works of the late Joel Schumacher, “The Lost Boys” stands out as an exceptional gem. This film, with its unique blend of style and horror, ranks among the most captivating entries in the annals of vampire cinema.

In this tale, we follow the journey of two brothers, Michael and Sam (portrayed by Jason Patric and Corey Haim), along with their mother Lucy (Dianne Wiest), as they uproot their lives to settle in Santa Carla, California, a town where their grandfather resides. Unbeknownst to them, Santa Carla is under the sway of a band of youthful vampires more than any other place. Tragically, Michael becomes ensnared by this sinister cult.

With the assistance of the Frog brothers, a duo hailing from a nearby comic book store, Sam embarks on a desperate mission to save his brother’s soul before our family faces an agonizing disintegration.

The movie ‘The Lost Boys’ is a charming and enjoyable film with numerous appealing aspects. Firstly, its soundtrack, reminiscent of the 1980s, is a treasure trove for anyone yearning for that era. Moreover, it was the debut collaboration between Corey Haim and Corey Feldman on screen. However, what truly sets this film apart is the consistent tone; it’s not strictly a comedy, but it has its humor, yet maintains an air of seriousness without compromising. Lastly, among leaders of vampire clans, Kiefer Sutherland as David is hard to surpass.

30 Days of Night

As a movie critic, I’d say that much like myself, 30 Days of Night is a gripping, action-packed horror flick that seems as if it leapt from the panels of a comic book right onto the screen. In 2007, this film took audiences on an exhilarating journey to Barrow, Alaska, a remote town where the annual month-long plunge into day and night darkness only intensifies the harshness of its existence. But when a mysterious stranger arrives, bringing with him chaos, things take a darker turn. Accompanying this enigmatic figure are his ravenous, cunning vampire comrades, who plan to eradicate the town’s entire population.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but sing praises for “30 Days of Night.” This graphical novel adaptation often gets overlooked, yet it stands tall amidst a sea of lesser-appreciated films. Compared to the acclaimed “Sinners,” it didn’t make as big a splash critically or commercially, but let me tell you, it’s an exhilarating, genre-blending horror ride that doesn’t disappoint. Josh Hartnett and Melissa George deliver stellar performances, serving as the driving force behind this thrilling narrative. Even when Ben Foster graces our screens with his captivating presence, there are seldom moments of dullness in this movie. While it may not reach the heights of “Dracula” or any of the interpretations of “Nosferatu,” it undeniably strengthens the vampire film subgenre and is a must-watch for horror enthusiasts like myself.

True Grit

13-year-old Hailee Steinfeld, while filming “True Grit” directed by the Coen brothers, swiftly proved herself as a highly remarkable up-and-coming talent. Given that this was her debut feature film, her multifaceted and profound portrayal left an even greater impact. She assumed the role of 14-year-old Mattie Ross, who had recently lost her father to the hands of outlaw Tom Chaney (played by Josh Brolin). Determined to seek justice, she enlists the assistance of the habitually inebriated marshal Rooster Cogburn, portrayed by Jeff Bridges, a role previously held by John Wayne. Accompanying them is Texas Ranger LaBeouf, played by Matt Damon. Neither man was keen on Mattie’s presence, but her resolve remained steadfast, even if it meant facing the man responsible for her father’s death head-on.

Remarkably, among the finest-looking Western films produced during the 2010s, “True Grit” stands out as not only visually appealing but also boasting top-tier quality within its genre since the millennium’s start. Similar to James Mangold’s “3:10 to Yuma,” it effectively enlisted A-list actors and delivered a product that matched, if not surpassed, their previous works. The film amassed 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Bridges, and Best Supporting Actress for Steinfeld (though her role as “Supporting” in this context seems somewhat puzzling). Regrettably, despite the impressive recognition, it ended the night without any awards.
