7 Sci-fi Shows With Only One Season

It’s commonly believed that having more doesn’t automatically mean better, and this rings true when considering some outstanding science fiction TV shows. Though numerous exceptional series have extended over several seasons, an equal number of hidden treasures were limited to just one. It’s worth noting that some of these were deliberately planned for a single season, while others met unfortunate fates, ending before they could truly flourish and shine. Immediately, sci-fi enthusiasts will probably recall more than a dozen series that fit into either group. While it may not be feasible to review them all, it’s still worth exploring a few of these shows, as there’s nothing sadder than becoming attached to a series only to find out it won’t continue.

To put it simply, you should approach these sci-fi series with caution and awareness. On the bright side, giving them careful consideration might lead to their reappearance on our screens for further tales – something that has happened in the past. Streaming platforms have gained a reputation for reviving shows from other networks, which I hope will persist as long as popular shows keep getting canceled.

Science fiction is a diverse category encompassing tales as varied as gritty Earth-based cyberpunk journeys to epic space voyages with a Western flavor. On screen, these narratives may be presented as live-action or animated series, although live-action shows are often more popular. This genre offers an engaging escape from reality, presenting intricate worlds that verge on the magical.

The Middleman (2008)

The show titled “The Middleman,” known for its unique sci-fi charm and character, unfortunately didn’t draw a large audience. As a result, it was unable to secure a second season. To make matters worse, the initial season was trimmed from 13 episodes to just 12, denying fans an additional adventure. However, there is a silver lining: the missing episode has been adapted into a comic book (“The Middleman—The Doomsday Armageddon Apocalypse”). Although it’s not the same as watching the show, at least we have something to fill the gap.

This show, titled The Middleman, blends action, humor, and science fiction to produce an extraordinary series filled with vivid characters and peculiar tales. The narrative employs a traditional one-off monster-of-the-week structure, incorporates common sci-fi motifs, and sprinkles in pop culture references. The main character is Wendy Watson, a struggling artist on the hunt for a fresh opportunity, who reluctantly accepts the job as The Middleman. Prepare to delve into a realm brimming with supernatural and technological perils, such as aliens, flesh-eating zombies craving trout, and exceptionally intelligent apes. The Middleman is ideal for sci-fi enthusiasts seeking an unconventional adventure. Regrettably, this show remains underappreciated yet retains a passionate but small fanbase. Rest assured, viewers can anticipate a boost in their spirits from this show.

The Middleman is available to purchase through Prime Video.

I Am Not Okay With This (2020)

I Am Not Okay With This is a coming-of-age tale inspired by Charles Forsman’s graphic novel. Sadly, due to a cliffhanger ending and the challenges of filming amidst COVID and escalating costs, this series was abruptly concluded. To learn how the story truly ends, fans must turn to the original source material.

The series titled “I’m Not Okay With This” centers around Sydney Novak, portrayed by Sophia Lillis, a typical teenager dealing with numerous issues. At first glance, her story might seem like a common coming-of-age tale; however, it deviates from the norm due to an unusual factor – Syd’s father’s recent demise. This event sets the stage for an enigmatic plot that slowly unravels throughout the initial season, culminating in a suspenseful, blood-tinged cliffhanger that leaves viewers with a lingering memory. The show masterfully combines adolescent struggles, self-discovery of sexuality, and personal identity exploration.

I Am Not Okay With This is available to stream on Netflix.

Almost Human (2013-2014)

Is there anything more appealing than a series that seamlessly blends science fiction with crime thrillers? The combination is popular for a reason – it leaves us craving more. Almost Human, featuring Karl Urban and Michael Ealy, successfully brings these two styles together, but unfortunately, the viewership numbers didn’t meet expectations for another season.

In the not-too-far future (2048), the series titled “Almost Human” unfolds. The story revolves around John Kennex, a detective who’s recently awakened from a lengthy coma, triggered by his hazardous profession. This visually impressive show invites viewers to grapple with our deep-seated prejudices as humans and androids coexist and collaborate. It delves into themes of human nature, friendship, ethics, and other profound subjects.

Almost Human is available to stream on Apple TV.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022)

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my captivation with “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” – an enthralling animated sci-fi journey set within the expansive universe of “Cyberpunk 2077”. Despite its initial design as a one-season tale, the fervor among fans for additional content has been relentless. Recently, Netflix has hinted at potential future explorations within this universe, yet we remain in suspense about whether it will continue our current narrative or embark on an entirely new journey.

The series “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” is set in a grim, futuristic city filled with crooked corporations, violent gangs, and the widespread use of cybernetic enhancements. The story centers around David Martinez, an aspiring student who finds himself drawn into the world of “Cyberpunk”, abandoning his initial aspirations for something altogether different. Along his journey, David becomes part of a team of operatives, or “runners”, who guide him through this new life, both positively and negatively. As suggested by its title, “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” is a superb example of the cyberpunk genre, boasting stunning visuals, advanced technology, and multiple emotional climaxes. Even those unfamiliar with the game found it captivating upon release. The series was groundbreaking for several reasons, including its innovative animation style, profound themes, and meticulous attention to detail.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is available to stream on Netflix.

Station Eleven (2021)

The intriguing series Station Eleven stands out among sci-fi shows for numerous reasons. Originating from Emily St. John Mandel’s acclaimed novel, it was intentionally crafted to span over 10 episodes, ensuring a precise and complete adaptation with no additional or missing installments.

The novel “Station Eleven” is set in a future resembling a dystopia that seems eerily plausible. Written before 2020, its narrative resonates deeply due to its portrayal of a global pandemic that decimated humanity. Navigating this story might require patience, as the narrative structure of Station Eleven is not straightforward. Instead, it weaves together past and present events in intricate ways, at times evoking both awe and horror. Despite its subtleness, “Station Eleven” makes a compelling addition to this list of sci-fi series.

Station Eleven is available to stream on Max.

Firefly (2002)

Firefly, undoubtedly one of the most renowned sci-fi series, was unjustly cut short. The show encountered numerous obstacles from the start, such as episodes being aired out of sequence (amazingly enough). It seems as though someone was attempting to sabotage this show. However, the devoted fans proved too relentless for any potential attempts to suppress it. Regrettably, we never received a second season of Firefly, but fans were rewarded with a movie (Serenity) and several graphic novels. Although not exactly the same, it was a small consolation.

The story unfolds in a distant future, where mankind has ventured into the cosmos. It revolves around a motley crew living onboard a spaceship named Serenity, a ship of the Firefly class. They’re not exactly upstanding citizens, which adds to their endearing quality as they navigate this space world reminiscent of the Wild West. Besides Western influences, the series also incorporates various other visuals and concerns, such as a pair of fugitive siblings, a resourceful crew making ends meet, and glimpses into a past war. The characters are remarkably authentic, adding depth to the narrative. The show masterfully combined suspense, romantic intrigue, action, comedy, and world-building, instantly earning its place among classics.

Firefly is available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu.

WandaVision (2021)

The television series titled “WandaVision” is integrated within the extensive Marvel Cinematic Universe, and oh boy, did it leave viewers spellbound! It received an impressive 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with endless discussions revolving around theories until the very end. Despite not officially being renewed for a second season, it has spawned at least one offshoot titled “Agatha All Along“. However, the show did encounter some drama behind the scenes, such as losing an episode and grappling with other production issues.

In terms of captivating series that blend nostalgia with a twist of mind-bending intrigue, nothing compares to the extraordinary spectacle of WandaVision. This show seamlessly integrates magic, chaos, and science fiction into an original and mesmerizing narrative. It’s as gripping as it is heartrending, making it a must-watch for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). To truly appreciate the show, one should have a fundamental grasp of the events that unfolded in Avengers: Endgame, as the story continues from there. However, what sets WandaVision apart is its innovative approach to reimagining classic TV formats and aesthetics. The show boldly challenges Marvel’s conventions by experimenting with diverse narrative styles, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats and captivated throughout. In summary, WandaVision has left fans in awe, demonstrating its ability to keep us guessing right up until the end.

WandaVision is available to stream on Disney+.
