Superheroes often draw inspiration from the animal kingdom for their origins, abilities, and characteristics. From the most casual comic book reader to the hardcore fan, there’s a long list of such heroes, with characters like Batman, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Black Panther being widely popular. But don’t forget about the villains with animal themes; that list could go on indefinitely! It might get a bit peculiar, considering some superheroes are already quite unusual, even the famous ones such as Spider-Man and Batman who seem more like they’re wearing pajamas than resembling their animal counterparts while patrolling the city.
However, what about those who haven’t yet scaled such heights? What about the underdogs, the peculiar, and the champions striving to make their mark on crime-fighting? Their identities aren’t confined to a single organization or another, and some of them manage to win over a large following, gracing television shows and earning leading roles in video games.
Strange can encompass more than one meaning. It’s not limited to a single definition. Strange can refer to a name, an appearance, or a character’s personality. It can also suggest behavior that is oddly normal, like a character behaving normally but with an unusual look, such as a person in a squirrel costume, or a character who is an intergalactic, potty-mouthed duck in a suit. Be aware, these examples are spoilers, so read cautiously when you scroll to peruse our list.
1) Squirrel Girl
One day, Doreen Allene Greene found she could communicate with squirrels, and eventually developed traits similar to theirs as well. However, she’s not a mutant, despite the intriguing possibility it might have been beneficial during the Krakoa era. Initially, she aspired to be Iron Man’s partner, assisted him in defeating Doctor Doom using a swarm of squirrels, and impressively demonstrated her abilities at only 14 years old.
Over time, I found myself joining the ranks of the Great Lakes Avengers, caring for Luke Cage and Jessica Jones’ little ones, forming a bond with Galactus, contemplating marriage to the Mole Man, and ultimately ascending to the esteemed role of an Avenger, teaming up with Captain America and Spider-Man. What started as a somewhat humorous character has transformed into a cherished aspect of Marvel Comics history. Unconventional yet accomplished, I’ve made my way to becoming a valuable asset in the Marvel universe.
2) The Tick
In a fun twist, The Tick is an eccentric superhero who fits perfectly within the animal-themed hero category. His name gives him away, right? He’s a tireless champion, donning a snug blue suit as he combats crime alongside his moth-costumed sidekick, Arthur. His invulnerability is quite noticeable, and while he might seem a bit unhinged in the original comics, that’s just part of his charm. He transforms into The Tick without any recollection of his past life before this transformation. Initially portrayed as legally insane, he managed to break free from confinement during his origin story. Later adaptations have introduced subtle changes or added more intrigue surrounding his background.
3) Detective Chimp
Detective Chimp made his debut in DC Comics’ “Adventures of Rex the Wonder Dog” in 1952. He continued to appear in the series until 1959, and later resurfaced after the event known as “Crisis on Infinite Earths” in 1985, taking on a more restricted role. However, he gained significant recognition among contemporary fans due to his participation in the “Day of Vengeance” mini-series during the build-up to “Infinite Crisis”.
Initially, Detective Chimp was merely a mascot for a local sheriff, assisting in the investigation of his trainer’s murder. Subsequently, Detective Chimp joined forces with Shadowpact to prevent the Spectre from causing widespread magical destruction. He also earned membership in Justice League Dark and was given the responsibility of finding the new Doctor Fate.

4) Howard the Duck
For several decades, Howard the Duck has been a notable character in Marvel Comics, created by Steve Gerber. He is proficient in a martial art called Quack-Fu, owns an Iron Man suit, and originates from Duckworld. Previously working as Santa Claus at a department store, he later became a film star with his own movie in 1986. After that, he found renewed fame by appearing in the post-credits sequences of both Guardians of the Galaxy films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
If you still aren’t convinced he’s an unusual individual, consider this: upon his arrival on Earth from Duckworld, he opted to settle down in Cleveland, Ohio. Such commitment truly speaks volumes about his unique nature.
5) Spider-Ham
Once primarily recognized as a quirky sidekick in the Marvel Tails comic book series (issue #1), Spider-Ham gained prominence later, particularly through the Spider-Verse films. Originally, Peter Porker was bitten by an irradiated Aunt May Porker’s atomic-powered hairdryer-transformed spider, much like how Peter Parker was affected by a radioactive spider. This incident gave rise to his unique Spider-Ham persona.
In these tales, characters mimicking animals from the Marvel world join forces with Spider-Pig (or Spider-Ham). Among them are Deer Devil, the Fantastic Fur, and King-Pig. What’s peculiar to Spider-Pig is that he was brought into the main Marvel universe during the Spider-Verse event. In a heartrending turn of events, he even sacrificed himself to shield Benjy Parker, the little brother of Spider-Girl. Here’s wishing you safe travels, Spider-Pig!
6) Captain Carrot
Although Captain Carrot and his Zoo Crew might seem peculiar when compared to traditional superheroes like Superman, they are reminiscent of classic Looney Tunes characters. Initially, they were introduced as allies to Superman following an attack by Starro the Conqueror from their universe, which lies on Pluto in Captain Carrot’s home world.
As his journey leads him to the Justice League of the Multiverse, he undergoes a remarkable transformation, turning into an actual animal following the occurrences of Final Crisis. Now, standing tall as a giant humanoid rabbit, Captain Carrot wields powers similar to Superman and collaborates with President Superman and Nix Uotan in their efforts to repel invaders.
7) Tigra
As a devoted cinephile, I’d envision reimagining Greer Grant Nelson as Tigra in an intriguing way. Instead of starting off as Tigra, she initially operated under the alias ‘The Cat’, donning a costume reminiscent of Hellcat. Her life took a dramatic turn when she encountered an accident that transformed her into a human-sized feline. Now, Tigra embodies a captivating blend of humanity and cat-like qualities, grappling with the harsh truths of existing in both worlds.
As a devoted moviegoer, I can’t help but admire Tigra, a West Coast Avenger who often finds herself in the thick of things when the team unites. Recently, she’s gone through a significant change, thanks to MODOK and AIM’s meddling, turning into a colossal 200-foot version of herself! Yet, one of Tigra’s most haunting scenes is quite unforgivable – it shows the Avengers battling an unrelenting Hulk who snatches Tigra mid-attack and rips her apart like a toy. No character, no matter how unique or lesser-known, deserves such inhumane treatment, especially when they’re just a blend of other, more celebrated personas.
