7 Times Goku Should’ve Used SSJ4 in Dragon Ball But Didn’t

The Dragon Ball Daima series concluded by unveiling Goku’s new authentic Super Saiyan 4 transformation, which is amusing to recall given the numerous instances where he opted not to use it throughout the series. This transformational stage was initially presented in the non-canonical events of the Dragon Ball GT anime and has now been officially incorporated into the main series canon by Akira Toriyama with the storyline of Dragon Ball Daima. However, as one might anticipate from such a revelation, it has sparked numerous queries about the chronology due to its novelty yet familiarity.

The climactic episode of ‘Dragon Ball Daima’ saw Goku’s powerful Super Saiyan 4 form bring an end to the fierce battle against the Supreme Demon King Gomah. However, a surprising twist was unveiled: it wasn’t Neva’s magic that enabled Goku to transform, but rather his own long-term training efforts, which he had been uncertain would succeed. This ability, which he possessed all along, was seemingly set aside once Beerus and Whis introduced godly powers in the storyline of ‘Dragon Ball Super’.

In the Dragon Ball Daima series, events unfold after the Majin Buu saga and before the Battle of Gods. There were several instances where Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 form would have proved advantageous, but oddly enough, he never utilizes it in these situations.

vs. Beerus

In the Battle of Gods arc’s opening fight, Goku facing off against Beerus offers a striking (and amusing) demonstration of this recent revelation. The humor lies in the fact that if Super Saiyan 4 is indeed within Goku’s capabilities, it’s hard to believe he didn’t use it during his initial skirmish with Beerus when he could have. Although he later gains divine powers following this battle, it’s more entertaining now to consider that he didn’t attempt to utilize Super Saiyan 4’s power against Beerus. This is even funnier considering some versions of the story have Goku himself stating he only has three transformations at that point.

vs. Goku Black

In the battle against Goku Black, it’s less problematic that there was no Super Saiyan 4 since Goku used his base Super Saiyan forms to start off against his evil counterpart. However, the fight escalated to godly levels quickly. Super Saiyan 4 might not have been suitable for the later stages of the battle because it’s probably not as powerful as the god forms (especially Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan). Instead, he could have utilized it during the initial stages when Goku Black was still learning his moves. Still, given the circumstances, it seems reasonable that he didn’t use it in this fight, making it easier to understand why it wasn’t included.

vs. Kefla

Despite having several opportunities to utilize Super Saiyan 4 during the Tournament of Power, Goku only did so on a few crucial occasions. Most notably, his battles with Kale and Caulifla from Universe 6. In these fights, Goku not only showcased the abilities of Universe 6’s Saiyans but also displayed his own Super Saiyan 3 transformation. This transformation consumes a lot of energy, so Goku typically reserves it for special occasions, such as demonstrating his power. However, there were moments when using a touch of Super Saiyan 4 to emphasize the strength of the Saiyans would have been fitting, but he didn’t do so.

vs. Jiren

In his battle against Jiren, Goku also found himself in similar predicaments where using Super Saiyan 4 could have given him an edge when god forms weren’t accessible. However, instead of pushing his base Super Saiyan abilities to their maximum potential when he couldn’t access his godly powers, Goku persisted and depleted all other options available to him. This behavior is unusual, especially considering the challenges he faced, but it’s just another intriguing instance in this series of peculiar situations.

vs. Broly

In the scenario of the Universe 6 Saiyans, Goku and Vegeta showcase their entire range of transformations while battling a fellow Saiyan, but they fail to utilize their Super Saiyan 3 (Vegeta) and Super Saiyan 4 (Goku) forms, even though these were introduced in Dragon Ball Daima. This would have been the ideal moment for them to activate these powerful abilities before progressing into their god transformations. However, they do not do so, and this persistent change in the new anime only adds to the frustration of fans.

vs. Planet Eater Moro

In the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc of Dragon Ball Super, the battles against Planet Eater Moro were an instance where it was tactically wise for Goku not to employ Super Saiyan 4. Since Moro consumed everything thrown at him, using a form like Super Saiyan 4, which continuously expends energy, would have been unnecessary against such an adversary. Instead, Goku opted for conserving his power by avoiding transformations that drain his stamina quickly, such as Super Saiyan 3. Moro was a unique villain who required a specific strategy to defeat, making it strategic for Goku to primarily rely on his various forms of Ultra Instinct in this case. It would have been intriguing to see him use Super Saiyan 4 against Moro, but given the situation, it made more sense for him to maintain his strength and strategy.

vs. Gas

In the climactic battle within Dragon Ball Super, Gas could have been an ideal adversary for Goku to unleash his Super Saiyan 4 form against. He was among the most formidable opponents Goku had encountered up until then, and such a transformation would have been particularly useful during Goku and Vegeta’s desperate struggle to defeat him, as they were rapidly depleting their available strategies. The same argument applies to the fights with Granolah, highlighting how astonishing it is that Goku has been concealing a transformation all this time but hasn’t yet utilized it.
