Attention! This article discloses key plot points from the finale of 1923 season 2, titled “A Dream and a Memory.” Here are seven instances that solidify Spencer Dutton‘s (Brandon Sklenar) heroic nature throughout the series. From its inception to its conclusion, 1923 portrayed Spencer as the family savior within the Dutton lineage. For instance, Jacob’s (Harrison Ford) strategy to safeguard Yellowstone relied on Spencer’s homecoming, and Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) might not have made it to America at all if not for Spencer’s presence. Indeed, 1923 was correct in depicting Spencer as a hero, as he consistently demonstrated his worthiness of that title.
Given that Spencer’s character in one of several spinoff series based on the Yellowstone universe, we anticipated he would save the ranch by the end of 1923. Yet, creator Taylor Sheridan managed to keep us guessing with Spencer’s tale and presented ample chances to highlight his heroic traits. From battling dangerous predators to fearlessly charging into peril, Spencer never shied away from opportunities to demonstrate his bravery and heroism. The following seven scenes from 1923 serve as the most compelling evidence of Spencer Dutton’s heroic nature.
7. Spencer Saved Alexandra From Drowning After Their Boat Capsized
Spencer Dove Back Into Shark-Infested Waters To Save Alexandra
Initially attempting their perilous voyage to America unsuccessfully, Spencer and Alexandra sought return to England via a compact tugboat. Regrettably, the captain (Peter Stormare) met an untimely end, and the tugboat was overturned by a spectral ship. Miraculously escaping, Spencer found himself, yet Alexandra remained trapped beneath the watercraft.
In waters teeming with sharks, Spencer bravely dove in to rescue Alexandra from drowning. Despite his efforts being insufficient to single-handedly save her entirely, as they were discovered by a passing ship, he undeniably demonstrated extraordinary valor for his love.
6. Spencer Saved A Camp By Killing Man-Eating Leopards
Spencer Even Got Mauled By The Leopard For His Trouble
In the novel 1923, our introduction to Spencer Dutton finds him engaged in a daring profession – big game hunting in Africa. This job itself speaks volumes about his bravery and valor, but it was when we delved into the intricate details of one particular hunt that we were left in no doubt. Spencer was employed to pursue and eliminate a man-eating leopard threatening a safari camp, unaware that there were two formidable felines lurking nearby. In the ensuing chase, Spencer managed to slay both leopards, narrowly escaped their attacks, and ultimately saved the entire camp from imminent danger.
Although subduing two leopards at great personal risk is a remarkable accomplishment for Spencer in the year 1923, it may not represent his most heroic act during that period. As a professional big game hunter, Spencer knowingly placed himself in such perilous circumstances. Moreover, he accepted this position as a means of escaping the emotional turmoil left by his service in World War I and avoiding returning home, which are hardly selfless motivations. However, later in 1923, Spencer performed acts that were far more courageous and heroic for much nobler reasons.
5. Spencer Fought Off Several Lions While He & Alexandra Were Trapped In A Tree
Spencer Survived A Charging Elephant & A Pride Of Lions
Not long after Spencer crossed paths with Alexandra, they embarked on a safari journey that soon turned chaotic. As they navigated the roads, an elephant suddenly charged at their vehicle, causing it to overturn and become inoperable. This was only the beginning of their ordeal, as darkness fell and a group of lions drew near. In another display of bravery, Spencer once more demonstrated his heroism by shooing Alexandra up a tree and firing at several attacking lions. His act of valor provided enough respite for some of Spencer’s companions to arrive and drive away the remaining predators.
Although Spencer’s actions were heroic in saving Alexandra from the lions, it’s important to note that he was also putting himself in grave danger at the same time. It might have been more about survival than courage for him. Furthermore, Spencer had a history of hunting large predators like lions, so this wasn’t an entirely unfamiliar situation for him. Nevertheless, his encounter with the lions remains an impressive demonstration of his bravery.
4. Spencer Single-Handedly Repelled The Attackers At The Ranch
Spencer Proved He Really Was The Duttons’ Only Hope When He Killed Whitfield’s Men
In the sole gunfight we witnessed involving Spencer in the series 1923, it became clear that his reputation as a soldier was well-deserved, as claimed by his awards. Upon arriving in Montana at the end of season 2 of 1923, Spencer promptly headed to the Yellowstone ranch to ward off Donald Whitfield’s (Timothy Dalton) men. Near single-handedly, he dispatched approximately a dozen of them, thereby securing the Yellowstone. After observing Zane (Brendan Geraghty) and the other cowboys trying to protect the lodge, Spencer made them all seem inept by comparison. He nonchalantly strode into a torrent of gunfire without so much as flinching.
3. Spencer Saved Luca From Being Raped
Spencer Beat A Man Senseless To Protect Someone He Barely Knew
Instead of merely advocating for himself and his family members, Spencer took action during the start of the 1923 season 2. On the ship where he worked, Spencer encountered Luca (Andy Dispensa). When he learned that Luca was being sexually assaulted by another worker, Spencer swiftly intervened, physically attacking and seriously injuring the man to defend Luca. Moreover, Spencer prevented Luca from taking his own life, and he did so for a coworker he hardly knew. All Spencer had was a sense that someone needed help, and he made the choice to protect someone who appeared more vulnerable than him. If such actions don’t define a hero, I’m unsure what does.
2. Spencer Freed A Prostitute While Running From The Police
Spencer Risked His Freedom To Help Someone Who Society Hated That Was In Need
In a similar fashion, Spencer aided an unfamiliar person in the second season of 1923, which was in 1923. Amidst his own troubles with the police during his bootlegging escapade, he encountered a woman who was tarred and feathered and being publicly humiliated. Later, when Spencer managed to escape from police custody, he momentarily paused his escape to untie the woman’s restraints and rescue her from the enraged crowd. Remarkably, he had never crossed paths with this woman before, but he felt compelled to assist her out of kindness as she was in distress.
In an act of remarkable bravery, Spencer’s actions surpassed many of his previous feats due to the significant personal danger involved. At the time, he was a fugitive from the law, yet he chose to free the sex worker. This decision not only slowed him down but also attracted unwanted attention. He could have easily been apprehended for this act of kindness, but Spencer made a selfless choice to rectify a wrong. He faced the possibility of imprisonment and losing Alexandra and the ranch forever, all just to uphold justice.
1. Spencer Jumped Off A Moving Train & Carried Alexandra To Safety
Alexandra’s Love Made Many Of Spencer’s Heroics Possible
In the year of 1923, Spencer’s bravest act took place not on any battlefield, but towards his wife, Alexandra. Stranded and near death in the bitter cold at the close of season 2, Alexandra was miraculously found by Spencer as his train passed by her. Remarkably, Spencer jumped from the moving train to save her. He then carried Alexandra towards warmth and safety, an action that was necessary as the train continued on its way. This selfless act transformed Spencer into a true hero, reminiscent of a knight in shining armor, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to protect Alexandra.

In the heart-wrenching tale of Saving Alexandra, I found a profound truth echoed through Spencer’s valiant acts. It was Alexandra who ignited the hero within Spencer, transforming him from a self-centered man to one who put others before himself. Before Alexandra entered my life, the leopard’s brutal act against an innocent woman barely registered on my radar; all I could see was deception from the camp owner. But once I met her, I became a changed man – one who would step up for strangers and even those in the shadows like prostitutes. The heart-breaking loss of Alexandra in 1923 only magnified the sorrow of her passing.
