Visiting a Jurassic Park movie means you’re primarily there to see the dinosaurs. Even the human actors acknowledge that the T-rexes, velociraptors, and other creatures steal the show in this enduring blockbuster series. However, it’s important not to underestimate the impact the characters from Jurassic Park have made on the story. Characters like Ian Malcolm with his famous bare chest or Ellie Sattler played by Laura Dern, and Dr. Hammond portrayed by Richard Attenborough, have unique personalities that are as memorable as any groundbreaking visual effects.
Not every character from the Jurassic Park series is as iconic as some fans might remember, but there are certainly many intriguing human figures throughout these dinosaur-focused tales. In fact, there are enough noteworthy human characters to consider seven of them underrated. These seven Jurassic Park individuals deserve more recognition for their contributions to this storyline that has lasted for over three decades. Although the focus is on dinosaurs, these humans also added significant elements to the mix.
Dennis Nedry
Hey Dodgson! It’s Dodgson here!” But wait, there’s no magic phrase!” I see you don’t care!”
Nedry, the character portrayed by Wayne Knight in Jurassic Park, has left a lasting impact on pop culture with his memorable lines. However, it’s essential to recognize that Nedry is more than just a collection of witty remarks. Knight masterfully brings out Nedry’s vulnerability throughout the film, making him an intriguing character. This unrefined, disloyal InGen employee is always stumbling through his espionage attempts. Watching such a realistically flawed human being on screen, especially with an actor like Wayne Knight playing the role, is captivating and entertaining.
Ray Arnold
In the movie “Jurassic Park”, the character Ray Arnold (played by Samuel L. Jackson), who is a tech expert, maintains an exceptionally calm and composed demeanor, even with a cigarette constantly hanging from his lips. This cool, collected attitude stands out starkly against the backdrop of the groundbreaking scientific discoveries happening around him. If Arnold were working at a dockyard instead, he’d likely exhibit the same laid-back yet captivating persona while dealing with colossal dinosaurs! Despite his tranquil exterior, there’s something riveting about watching Arnold as he gradually grows more concerned as the theme park begins to unravel.
Jurassic Park is now streaming on Starz.
Roland Tembo
In each sequel of the Jurassic Park series, there appears to be a malevolent figure with a hunting background. For instance, in The Lost World: Jurassic Park, this antagonist was Roland Tembo, portrayed by Pete Postlethwaite. What sets Tembo apart is his surprising display of morality towards the end of his character development. Despite being offered a comfortable position by his employer (who was the main antagonist in The Lost World), Tembo declined after observing the devastating effects of unbridled greed. These subtle hints of complexity make him one of the more intriguing, heavily armed adversaries within the Jurassic Park universe.

Paul Kirby
In the secret mission to save his son trapped on Isla Sorna, Paul Kirby (William H. Macy), Dr. Alan Grant, and others find themselves stuck on Sorna instead. Macy, known for his exceptional portrayal of ordinary, unscrupulous characters in movies like “Fargo” and “Magnolia”, perfectly conveys the everyday quality of Kirby as he maneuvers through prehistoric creatures. Even the unexpected turn of events where Macy becomes somewhat of an action hero in the climax of “Jurassic Park III” makes Paul Kirby a standout character in the annals of “Jurassic Park”.
Jurassic Park III is now streaming on Starz.
Vivian
In the movie Jurassic World, while Lowery Cruthers (played by Jake Johnson) often garners audience affection, let’s not overlook Vivian (portrayed by Lauren Lapkus). She too brings lots of humor to her scenes, such as her witty response “I have a boyfriend” when Cruthers attempts to kiss her. Additionally, the hint of friendship between Vivian and Jurassic World owner Simon Masrani implies that she has more connections than just those shown in Jurassic World. Interestingly, it’s revealed in Jurassic World Dominion that Vivian even ended up working for, surprisingly, the CIA.
Jurassic World is now streaming on Prime Video.
Ken Wheatley
In “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”, Eli Mills, portrayed by Rafe Spall, serves as the main antagonist, but is rather generic. However, Ken Wheatley, played by Ted Levine (renowned for his role as Buffalo Bill in “The Silence of the Lambs”), stands out as a refreshingly wicked mercenary who exudes slime from the moment he appears. Unlike the dull and forgettable villains in the film, Wheatley is boldly evil. Furthermore, Wheatley’s character meets an entertaining end that results directly from his unyielding greed.
Barry Sembène
As a movie enthusiast and particularly a fan of the Jurassic Park series, I’ve always found it interesting how human characters tend to be one-time appearances, even significant ones like Dr. Ian Malcolm’s daughter or Dr. Alan Grant, who were absent from their respective sequels. However, there’s one character that stands out – Barry Sembène, played by Omar Sy in Jurassic World. Unlike many other characters in this franchise, Barry returns in Jurassic World Dominion, having forged a new life for himself and even managing to evolve across multiple films. This is quite rare among supporting characters in the Jurassic Park universe, making Barry Sembène an underappreciated human character that deserves recognition.
