As a lifelong aficionado of all things supernatural, I find this list of vampire stories to be nothing short of delightful! From the classic tales of Blade and Dracula, to the contemporary twists of The Vampire Diaries and Only Lovers Left Alive, there’s something here for every kind of bloodsucker enthusiast.
In theaters now is Robert Eggers’ take on “Nosferatu,” a modern reinterpretation of the 1922 classic horror film “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.” This revamp has captured the hearts of both critics and horror enthusiasts alike. The plot, which is essentially an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” has become a benchmark in vampire narratives, casting a lasting influence on similar tales over the years. Eggers’ version promises to make its mark within the genre as well. One thing that’s already evident: vampires are making a comeback and are once again stealing the spotlight. So if “Nosferatu” sinks its teeth into you, chances are you’ll be craving more vampire stories. Fortunately, while you might need to stay out of the sunlight, there’s no need to be in the dark about what to watch next!
To begin our exploration, let’s take a moment to tidy up a few things first. This isn’t a ranking of the “best” vampire series to watch, though some items on this list are quite impressive. Also, you won’t find the usual suspects here – classics like Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, Dracula, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula are a given, while series like Twilight and The Lost Boy are frequently included on lists such as this. Instead, we aim to present some unconventional choices to satisfy your undead cravings and perhaps introduce you to something entirely new. Let’s dive into the list (which is not ranked).
The Hunger (1983)
In case you haven’t had a chance to watch Tony Scott’s first movie, “The Hunger” (released in 1983), it’s high time you correct that situation. Starring Catherine Deneuve and the legendary David Bowie, this film follows the story of vampires Miriam and John, with Miriam tracing her origins back to Ancient Egypt while John comes from 18th century France. Despite being centuries old, John is starting to age, facing the fate that all of Miriam’s companions share – an eternal living death.
Interview With the Vampire — Movie and Television Series
I’d like to offer you a pair of recommendations for the story “Interview With the Vampire”:
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)
You might not be familiar with “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”, a captivating film that combines elements of westerns and vampire tales. This innovative production is the brainchild of Persian director Ana Lily Amirpour, who presents us with a solitary female vampire character. She feeds on men who mistreat women in her Iranian hometown. The film’s visual appeal, enhanced by its black-and-white cinematography, is complemented by its unconventional portrayal of the vampire story, focusing on a female antagonist. Interestingly, she also skateboards, and the soundtrack is fantastic.
Forever Knight
Originating in 1992, “Forever Knight” is a Canadian TV show about Nick Knight (played by Geraint Wyn Davies), a 800-year-old vampire who serves as a detective in contemporary Toronto. He’s attempting to make amends for centuries of deaths by solving murders, while also searching for a way to regain humanity. The series initially premiered as the CBS movie “Nick Knight,” starring Rick Springfield, and ran for three seasons: the first on CBS, the second in first-run syndication, and the third on USA Network. What sets this vampire story apart is that two episodes imply that vampirism might be partly psychosomatic, as vampires who’ve forgotten they are vampires don’t experience many classic weaknesses. Additionally, three novels have been written based on the series.
Blade (1998)
Look, this is ComicBook. Did you expect this list to not include Blade? That notwithstanding, Blade is a solid vampire movie. Starring Wesley Snipes as Blade, the. movie is an adaptation of Marvel Comics and follows a human-vampire hybrid protecting the mortal world from vampires. The movie was a key component in the rise of comic book movies, and while Marvel is (eventually) giving us a new blade with Mahershala Ali playing the titular character, you don’t want to mis the original. Especially if you are comics fan.
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
Released in 2013, the film “Only Lovers Left Alive” features Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as two immortal vampires who have been married for centuries. In a world where uncontaminated blood is becoming increasingly scarce due to the modern era, they struggle not only with their relationship but also their very existence. Despite being vampires, the characters in this movie grapple with fears and insecurities that are remarkably similar to those of humans. This unique take on vampire stories is a strong addition to the genre.
The Vampire Diaries
To delve deeply into vampire narratives, it’s crucial to examine more modern tales that have significantly influenced their evolution for the coming years. As a result, “The Vampire Diaries” is included in this list. This series premiered in 2009 on The CW and ran for eight seasons. While it shares a title with L.J. Smith’s book series, its narrative isn’t strictly faithful. The story revolves around Elena Gilbert, a teenage girl living in Mystic Falls, Virginia, who becomes enamored with a 161-year-old vampire pretending to be human. Characters from the town, as well as Elena’s family and friends, are also part of the narrative. The town faces various supernatural threats, including werewolves, witches, ghosts, and hybrid creatures. Though the series frequently builds tension through romantic entanglements, it also introduces intriguing ideas to vampire folklore, such as “daylight rings” that, when imbued with magic, allow vampires to blend in among humans during daylight hours. Additionally, this series spawned two spin-offs, “The Originals” and “Legacies,” with some fans also considering the short-lived “The Secret Circle” series, based on another Smith book series about witches, as part of “The Vampire Diaries” legacy.
Nosferatu is in theaters now.
