The third season of Yellowjackets is brimming with unresolved enigmas that fans have been eagerly anticipating answers to for quite some time now. As a suspenseful drama, it uses two different timelines – one depicting a high school girls’ soccer team trapped in a plane crash from 1996, and the other following their adult survivor lives in 2021. If the series intends to last five seasons as reported by its writers, this midpoint should be the juncture where it ceases establishing long-term mysteries and instead begins providing satisfying resolutions.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating Season 3 of Yellowjackets, where our characters find themselves in grave peril. In the past timeline, their cabin has been reduced to ashes, leaving them exposed to the harsh winter elements and in dire need of shelter, warmth, and resources. The present-day survivors are grappling with a different kind of storm – they’ve got murder cover-ups on their hands and their own mental or supernatural challenges to navigate. I can’t wait to see how they tackle these hurdles, as they might just unravel some lingering questions for us. Here are ten mysteries that I hope will be addressed in Season 3:
1. What caused the plane crash?
2. Who or what is responsible for the strange occurrences in the wilderness?
3. What happened to the missing Yellowjackets?
4. Why do some survivors exhibit unusual abilities?
5. How are events from the past influencing the present-day timeline?
6. What’s the connection between the cabin and the strange symbols we’ve seen?
7. Who is the mysterious figure that some survivors have encountered in the woods?
8. What’s the significance of the Native American artifacts found at the crash site?
9. Why do the survivors seem to be aging differently in the present timeline?
10. Will any of the survivors escape their predicament and make it back home?
Javi’s Friend
For approximately two months during a severe winter, Javi Martinez managed to endure in the wilderness, away from his cabin, and he has yet to disclose his methods. Coach Ben discovered a possible shelter site, a cave, but there remain numerous unanswered questions about Javi’s time spent apart. Primarily, we seek further information regarding the “friend” he referred to. Javi hinted that this friend advised him to avoid the women in the cabin, which explains his absence. Some speculate that it was Tai’s alter-ego, Dark Tai, but if not, there may be other individuals living in the wilderness. This revelation could significantly impact the upcoming season.
Crystal/Kristen
Season 3 promises to delve deeper into the character of Crystal, or rather Kristen, who was once Misty’s confidante. In the previous season, their bond became incredibly strong, and Misty confided in Kristen about her darkest secret – the deliberate destruction of the black box from their plane. Upon hearing this, Kristen appeared shocked to the point of falling off a cliff. However, when Misty returned to recover Kristen’s body later on, it had mysteriously vanished, leaving no trace of having been moved.
There’s a widely-held belief that Kristen might have been Misty’s imaginary friend, with the other girls playing along by acting as if she was genuine. Regardless of its accuracy, we’ll find out more about this in Season 3, which could give us quite a surprise and shed light on the growing delusions of the characters.
Tai’s Sleepwalking
Readers are eagerly anticipating uncovering more details about Tai’s sleepwalking, her alternate persona, and her encounters with the Man Without Eyes. Just as Lottie straddles the boundary between mental instability and psychic abilities, this is a story element that might intentionally remain shrouded in mystery. However, it’s probable that we’ll delve deeper into the significance of the Man Without Eyes – whether he appears as a hallucination or an actual ghost. We may also witness the mature version of Tai tackling her sleepwalking in an attempt to reconcile her family, which could provide some insights. Ultimately, it’s up to Dark Tai to reveal the truth, if she chooses to do so.
Walter’s Backstory
There’s certainly a lot about Walter that remains untold, especially now that Elijah Wood has been upgraded to a regular this season, suggesting we’ll learn more about him. It appears Walter is as ruthless as any other character in the series, and his explanation of seeking Moriarty’s equivalent of Sherlock Holmes might be the only reason we’ll get for his actions. However, there are still many mysteries surrounding his enormous wealth, his obsession with Misty, and his detective abilities that need to be explored further.
Black Box
A key aspect that might drastically alter our understanding of this whole tale lies in who possesses knowledge about the black box. It seems plausible to persuade Misty to reveal this secret, yet it remains unclear if she ever disclosed it to anyone else from the time the cabin was burned until 2021. Many spectators presume she didn’t, as they believe she would have perished had she done so, but she might have just been fortunate or too valuable to track down. If only Misty holds this secret information, it could potentially pose a danger in the future rather than the past.
The Man in the Cabin
The character often referred to humorously as “Cabin Father” by fans is a hidden enigma that deserves more clarity. The girls discover his body in the cabin, they appear to interact with him during a seance, and Jackie encounters him in a dream right before her demise. If there’s some supernatural element at play, it would be intriguing to see how the spirit of Cabin Father responds to the devastation of his dwelling. It would also be fascinating to learn if he placed any kind of curse on the Wilderness, or if the ominous presence was there prior to his arrival.
Survivor Count
It’s possible that we’ve encountered every character who emerged from the Wilderness following a 19-month ordeal, but the ambiguity remains unresolved. Some viewers speculate that additional survivors might exist due to the enigmatic nature of the question and the numerous theories surrounding the pit girl scene. In case you need a refresher, there were eight individuals in the pit girl scenario at the start of Season 1, yet only seven have survived up until 2021. Interestingly, it appears that there are also eight people among the brief glimpses we catch of the survivors returning home in 1997.
In the intricately crafted series Yellowjackets, they tend to be somewhat carefree with specifics such as maintaining a tally of survivors throughout the storyline. As we dive into Season 3 set in 1996, it appears we’ll start off with 15 survivors, including Coach Ben. Interestingly, three of these characters have yet to be named, and their actors were changed between Seasons 1 and 2. This implies that there could be plenty of ritualistic hunting scenes ahead, but also potential for new survivors to join us in 2021.
Exact Location
It’s clear that the Yellowjackets are stuck in Canada and they’re known to be located west of the Rocky Mountains. However, we don’t know where exactly the Wilderness is, but since they were extracted from it, they must have a good idea. We might find out more if the characters from 1996 are ever rescued or if the 2021 characters face their past traumas. This could also tie into the mystery of Cabin Daddy, as his death records could potentially be discovered in the future.
Making a Pact
At a certain moment, everyone who survived the events in the Wilderness decided never to reveal those experiences to people outside, and they managed to keep that secret for more than twenty years. In Season 3, we’ll likely uncover how and when this unbreakable agreement was formed. It could potentially spell trouble for Coach Ben, the last non-cannibal in the Wilderness, since the others might decide to resolve any remaining loose ends by hiding the truth.
Supernatural or Delusion?
Ultimately, Season 3 presents a chance to explore the intriguing query: Is the Wilderness a genuine supernatural force or a collectively held illusion? This question has been hanging in the balance throughout the series so far, leaving some viewers feeling increasingly agitated, with some even believing that the supernatural aspects were diminished in Season 2 and expressing their dissatisfaction. Granted, this mystery may remain unresolved. Indeed, Lottie herself suggested it was irrelevant in the Season 2 finale. Yet, anticipate that Season 3 will likely provide fresh clues that could sway opinions among viewers in different directions.
The third season of Yellowjackets is set to debut on Friday, February 14th, available on both Showtime and Paramount+. If you haven’t caught up yet, you can stream the previous seasons right now on Showtime.
