The scenic Echo Valley was drawn from the vivid experiences of screenwriter Brad Ingelsby’s aunt, who ran a horse farm with the very same name.

Michael Pearce shared with NJ.com in June 2025 that a significant portion of his inspiration stemmed from individuals he’s encountered or tales he’s heard. In fact, they even visited his aunt’s residence to meet the real person who sparked this story idea. The location held potential for the film, but ultimately it didn’t quite fit [for the screen]. Brad’s inspiration was clear to Pearce.

Pearce elaborated on how he determined an ideal spot for fabricating the imaginary Echo Valley.

He mentioned that locating the specific site took an extensive search,” he explained. “It seemed as though we visited nearly every equestrian farm in New Jersey, yet none of them possessed everything on our list because we were seeking a picturesque setting that made sense for Julianne’s character to cherish. The location had to be immersive and captivating enough to support three-quarters of the film. We required a large, aged barn and an apartment above the stables, and it was challenging to discover a place that met all these criteria.

A large part of Moore and Sweeney’s scenes were filmed at a farm in Delaware Township, New Jersey.

During pre-production, we stumbled upon this location quite late,” Pearce explained. “We were mere weeks from filming, and when we finally saw it, everyone let out a collective sigh of relief. My team and I went there and, as we walked around, we all knew instantly that it was the perfect spot. However, acquiring it was challenging since it was up for sale. Legal concerns at the production company initially made them hesitant to work there because it was in escrow. But we persisted, emphasizing our need for this farm, and eventually won it over. There’s no other option; it simply had to be this place.

What Is ‘Echo Valley’ About?

On this very farm called Echo Valley, I, Kate Garrett (Moore), devote my days to the care and training of horses. However, since the passing of my beloved spouse, maintaining this sanctuary has become an arduous task that weighs heavily on me.

She turns to her lawyer/ex-spouse, Richard Garrett (MacLachlan), seeking assistance with her financial matters. Kate confides in him that their daughter, Claire Garrett (Sweeney), is battling drug addiction and a significant chunk of her wealth has been used towards Claire’s rehabilitation stays.

In a simpler and more conversational style: Claire goes to see her mom on the farm, but her old flame, Ryan (Donovan), unexpectedly appears, ruining their heartfelt reunion. Claire departs the farm with Ryan, only to return later, revealing that she got into an argument with him which led to a deadly altercation. Her friend Kate assists in hiding the deceased body wrapped in a blanket. After this apparent murder, a drug dealer named Jackie Lawson (Gleeson) appears on the scene, pressing Claire for money she supposedly owes him.

Later, Kate becomes worried when Claire vanishes from the farm. Upon searching for Claire, Kate encounters her in a startling situation with Ryan, who it turns out isn’t deceased. Ryan forces Kate before departing with Claire. After recovering from the fall, Kate goes back home only to find Jackie there to interrogate her about the corpse they had hidden together.

Jackie discloses that the deceased individual was Gregory Kaminski, a man who tragically passed away following a drug overdose after purchasing narcotics from Ryan. In a subsequent conversation with Kate, Jackie shares his elaborate scheme to torch the barn for insurance money. Unfortunately, Kate carries out this plan, but later faces police interrogation regarding skeletal remains discovered on the premises. Remarkably, Jackie too is questioned by law enforcement.

It comes to light that Kate had secretly placed Greg’s deceased body in the barn prior to setting it ablaze. Moreover, she deliberately retained a fragment of the road flare purchased by Jackie for the purpose of igniting the house, which was later destroyed. Over time, the police deduce that Greg overdosed on drugs provided by Jackie, and ultimately, Jackie resorted to torching the house to eliminate incriminating evidence.

In the final scenes of the movie, it’s Jackie who ends up being held accountable for the criminal act, while Kate avoids charges. Later on, we see Claire returning to the farm after Kate has hired workers to clear away the remains of the fire.
