As a passionate gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Opus Major, a studio comprised of industry veterans hailing from Ubisoft and other esteemed studios based in the heart of Paris, has unveiled their exciting new project: MAJJAM. This intriguing title promises to be a massively multiplayer online player-versus-environment musical adventure game, still in its early stages of development. When it’s ready for release, it will be accessible on PC via Steam. Keep an eye out for upcoming playtests—you can register for the opportunity directly through their official website!
As gamers ourselves, the founders of Opus Major and I share a vision: we yearn to unite the world in a rhythmic harmony, just like what happens during a jam session in music. In those moments, whether you’re with friends, strangers, or fellow enthusiasts, there’s an electric connection that transcends words. You might not know each other, but for a brief, enchanting period, your energies merge. It’s the same exhilaration you sometimes experience when playing multiplayer games. Our dream is to weave these beautiful, impromptu moments into one unified, collective adventure.
Here is an overview of the game, via Opus Major:
About
The pulse of the universe awakens in MAJJAM, the first creation from newly established studio Opus Major, unveiled not long ago: an exciting multiplayer game where music dictates the action, encompassing movement, combat, exploration, and interaction. Crafted by a group of experienced developers, MAJJAM is a lively cooperative adventure that draws inspiration from the communal energy of a live jam performance, allowing players to develop their own unique musical arsenal consisting of melodies, rhythms, and harmonies to traverse and save a vivid and constantly changing world. At its heart, MAJJAM offers an incredibly immersive social encounter that honors the unifying influence of both gaming and music.
In the vibrant realm of MAJJAM, participants primarily engage with one another and the environment using rhythms and melodies. Music serves as the world’s vital essence, providing a nurturing power that binds everything together and acting as the sole barrier against a sinister force called Kode – an ominous and advancing presence that brings fog tides where death and silence reign supreme. Players channel musical energy by jamming, blending their character’s special skills with their instruments and allies to vanquish adversaries, solve mysteries, and transform the world around them.
In this game, expressing music through ‘Jamming’ is the primary feature accessible to all players, transforming them into musicians without needing any prior instrumental skills. The studio aims to promote global unity through Jamming, so even those without musical background can create harmonious tunes and rhythms. Jamming offers various purposes: it can be used as a defense against Kode, for exploration and manipulation of the environment, solving mysteries, and much more!
In the game, every character possesses unique Jam skills that are reinforced and enhanced with musical talents. These musical talents can be acquired, accumulated, and saved for use during gameplay. Each talent has its own distinct musical effect, enriching the player’s abilities and connection with the game world.
Key Features
- The Fun and Creativity of Jamming, for Everyone – MAJJAM captures the joy and spontaneity of a musical jam session, for musicians and non musicians. The game’s technology auto-harmonizes all player performances online, with no noticeable latency. Players collaborate through intuitive gameplay mechanics, not musical skill, making creativity accessible to all. MAJJAM is not a rhythm game: it emphasizes communal creation as players express their characters’ musical abilities.
- A Shifting, Musical World – The vibrant, detailed world of MAJJAM is constantly shifting based on player input: the environment is reacting to player abilities, responding to it, and even opening mysteries. By combining their musical expressions with others, players can reshape part of the world around them, unlocking new areas, discovering powerful melodies, and encountering surprising obstacles.
- A Dynamic and Dangerous Fog System – Kode isn’t just an antagonist—its power is materialized in the game as a massive environmental threat; a lethal active force that defines the boundaries of exploration. Players can beat back its fog through their musical powers, and explore new zones that used to be restrained under the fog tides.
- Social Experiences with Personal Customization – Whether you enjoy strumming some chords, hearing delightful woodwind melodies or you’re percussion-addict, MAJJAM offers multiple, colorful character types for players to select, each with their own musical capabilities and distinct look. The key to maximizing their power comes from jamming with others, cooperatively creating with fellow players to craft a perfect harmony and exponentialize the effects on the world of MAJJAM.
