5 DC Characters Who Need Their Own Video Game

Washington D.C., home to some of the world’s most famous comic book heroes such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, has seen these characters translated into video games due to their immense popularity. However, apart from the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham series, DC has found it challenging to produce another successful game. The prospect of a strong follow-up was Monolith Productions’ Wonder Woman project, but unfortunately, this was canceled and led to the studio shutting down. It appears that superhero video games are facing difficulties, with numerous AAA projects being shelved.

There are countless other DC characters apart from the Trinity who have the potential to star in their own engaging video games. With numerous possibilities available, another successful game could easily be created. Even less popular characters can become appealing if their adaptations offer fun gameplay and introduce something fresh to an oversaturated market. Consequently, I’ve come up with five DC characters that I believe could make for captivating video game experiences.

1) John Constantine (Hellblazer)

Over time, the character John Constantine from the Hellblazer comic book series has grown more popular due to his appearances in mainstream DC films, TV programs, and comics. Although he’s now more recognized, there remains some uncertainty about who he is, which makes him an excellent candidate for a video game adaptation.

The unknown nature of this subject, coupled with its mysterious aspects and Constantine’s powerful magic skills, could create an outstanding roguelike action RPG, similar to the highly praised game Hades. It isn’t far-fetched to devise a narrative explanation for why Constantine can resurrect after repeated deaths. His diverse magical abilities would provide engaging progression options during gameplay. Additionally, characters like Swamp Thing could be introduced for enjoyable fan interactions. Lastly, Constantine’s quick wit is something comic book movie and TV fans are drawn to.

2) Green Lantern/ Green Lantern Corps

It’s somewhat unexpected that the characters of the Green Lantern Corps haven’t been significantly featured in a video game yet. Although their popularity might have waned slightly over the past decade, there are numerous creative avenues to incorporate the various colored power rings into an engaging narrative that would make for an excellent gaming experience.

Instead of creating an open-world Green Lantern action game similar to most proposed superhero video games, how about envisioning a unique take? Combining the thrilling combat from games like Marvel’s Spider-Man and the expansive space exploration akin to No Man’s Sky could certainly excite DC fans. But, let’s also consider a different angle that might be intriguing.

The Green Lantern Corps function as cosmic law enforcers, patrolling designated regions of the universe. For instance, Hal Jordan safeguards Sector 2814, encompassing Earth. It’s intriguing to imagine a less grandiose, more personal narrative where a Green Lantern solves a globally catastrophic mystery. In terms of gameplay, I envision something along the lines of what Supermassive Games are known for, like their upcoming project Directive 8020. Although it might seem unusual for an action-focused comic book hero, with skillful storytelling, a more focused and narrative-driven Green Lantern game could prove captivating.

3) Zatanna

In the vast realm of the DC universe, Zatanna Zatara stands out as one of its most potent magic wielders. Instead of speaking spells conventionally, she recites them in reverse, a skill that has earned her recognition within the Justice League. Given this distinctive power set, it’s easy to imagine how intriguing a video game featuring her could be.

Zatanna could potentially thrive in an action-packed game, much like Bayonetta in a title by Platinum Games. Her diverse skill set would enable her to perform intricate and spectacular combos. Moreover, her connections with the Justice League and Justice League Dark might introduce compelling characters from DC comics, such as Batman, John Constantine, Animal Man, and Deadman, adding an extra layer of excitement.

4) Katana

Tatsu Yamashiro, better known by her alias Katana, is a sword-carrying hero who associates with teams such as the Outsiders, Suicide Squad, Justice League of America, and Birds of Prey. Unlike Zatanna, she seldom takes center stage, despite possessing an intriguing backstory that could make for an exciting video game adaptation.

The origins of Katana are steeped in a heart-wrenching tale of love, envy, and loss. In essence, there were two brothers named Maseo and Takeo Yamashiro who both adored a woman named Tatsu. Eventually, Tatsu chose Maseo, and they had a family together, with Tatsu giving birth to twins. Years passed, and Takeo, now part of the yakuza, challenged his brother in a duel. As they fought, a devastating fire erupted, during which Takeo was fatally wounded by a sword called the Soultaker. Tragically, Tatsu arrived too late to save her children from the blaze. The sword was later taken by Tatsu, henceforth known as Katana.

The Soultaker Sword is capable of capturing the spirits of those it slays. This enigmatic weapon could find an ideal fit in a Souls-like game, such as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. A character named Katana could be crafted around this concept, with her tale of vengeance for her family’s demise serving as the narrative backbone within the Souls-like framework. Although it may not be a groundbreaking idea, it has the potential to create an engaging and immersive experience.

5) Terry McGinnis (Batman Beyond)

It seems likely that the role of continuing the storyline where the Batman: Arkham games ended would fall to Terry McGinnis’ version of Batman, a character who gained fame in the popular animated series “Batman Beyond.” In this future setting of Neo-Gotham, which carries cyberpunk elements, Terry assumes the mantle of the Dark Knight. Although there are new adversaries introduced, some of Bruce Wayne’s former enemies reappear to challenge the Bat once more.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but envision Batman Beyond unfolding within the realm of video games. The narrative structure perfectly positions Terry McGinnis as Bruce Wayne’s successor, offering an organic progression that gamers would relish experiencing.

The intricate relationship between Bruce and Terry could be skillfully woven into the game’s storyline, creating a captivating emotional journey for players. Moreover, reintroducing iconic adversaries such as The Joker or Hush back into the Arkham-verse could generate electrifying moments, provided they are executed with finesse.

This adaptation seems like a natural fit, and I can’t help but feel that fellow fans would be overjoyed to witness this vision brought to life in the gaming world.
