Ultraman’s True Identity REVEALED: You Won’t Believe Who It Is!

In the upcoming movie by James Gunn, it’s been revealed that the character known as Ultraman, who has been shown as a masked adversary to Superman in the trailers, is actually a character with a different identity than his typical portrayal in DC comics. This new version of Ultraman is one of Lex Luthor’s allies and aims to defeat David Corenswet’s Man of Steel. Although the anti-Superman figure is familiar in DC comics, this film offers an interesting twist on how Ultraman is used.

For several months, various theories have swirled about who Ultraman truly is, as his face is always concealed by a black mask and glasses in promotional materials. Some speculated he might be disguising the face of another DC superhero, while others thought he could be maintaining multiple secret identities and also be the one underneath the enigmatic Hammer of Boravia’s helmet. Now, with the release of Superman, the entire mystery surrounding Ultraman has finally been unveiled.

Warning – The rest of this article contains spoilers for Superman.

In the initial moments of Superman, Ultraman makes a covert appearance, unveiled as the mystery figure beneath the armor of Hammer of Boravia’s mask, as earlier theories had suggested. The character is depicted as being skillfully manipulated by LuthorCorp technicians, with Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) orchestrating the strategic moves Ultraman employs during his fight against Superman.

After abandoning his Hammer of Boravia identity, Ultraman reappears multiple times in Superman comics, portrayed as a powerful but mute character who unwaveringly obeys Luthor’s orders. He helps infiltrate the Fortress of Solitude and later battles Superman in Metropolis’ stadium, teaming up with The Engineer.

Near the closing scenes of the movie, it becomes clear who Ultraman truly is as Corenswet takes off his mask, revealing the visage of none other than Superman.

Ultraman’s True Face in Superman Explained

As a die-hard fan, it’s no wonder that the hidden visage beneath Ultraman’s mask bears an uncanny resemblance to Superman’s. In the realm of DC Comics, Ultraman is frequently portrayed as a dark reflection of Superman, and this observation holds true here. Yet, the narrative behind Ultraman’s origins in my favorite comics differs significantly from his original backstory.

In the climactic battle between Superman and Ultraman, Luthor reveals to Superman that Ultraman is a clone of him, manufactured from a strand of hair found at Superman’s battle sites. Although Ultraman possesses all of Superman’s powers, he lacks intelligence and character, with Luthor describing him as being considerably “less intelligent” than Superman. This explains why Luthor has controlled Ultraman throughout the fight, since he does not believe the clone is smart enough to emerge victorious on his own.

In the world of DC Comics, Ultraman is usually depicted as an alternate-universe counterpart of Superman who heads a criminal organization across multiple universes. But in this specific storyline, Ultraman’s origin story as a clone of Superman aligns more closely with that of another DC Comics character: Bizarro.

In the world of comics, Bizarro is a character who was created by copying Superman, a task assigned by Lex Luthor. However, this replica turned out imperfectly, taking the form of a gray-skinned being that serves as a sort of mirror image of Superman. In certain interpretations of the character, Bizarro is portrayed as mute and somewhat intellectually limited, much like his depiction in the movie Superman.

Instead of strictly adhering to either of these Superman origin tales, Gunn’s Superman merges the traits of Ultraman and Bizarro, drawing from aspects of both characters’ identities and histories. Although the character is named Ultraman and possesses the same facial features and powers, his origins and personality are more akin to Bizarro’s.

In the film, Superman manages to overcome Ultroman by hurling him into a newly formed black hole in Metropolis. This act might set the stage for Ultroman’s future resurrection, hinting at his transformation into Bizarro. On the other hand, it could also indicate that Ultroman was a temporary adversary and director Gunn might instead opt for one of Superman’s well-known villains as the main antagonist in the next installment.
