What’s next for Binance founder CZ after his 4-month sentence?

  • CZ is ready to do his time and move on to the next phase of life.
  •  Market watchers view Binance founder’s sentence as a “great deal.”

As a researcher with a background in finance and experience following the crypto market closely, I believe that Changpeng Zhao’s (CZ) four-month sentence is indeed a great deal under the circumstances. While he did violate U.S. money laundering regulations, and Binance paid a significant fine as part of the plea deal, CZ’s net worth far outweighs the fine. Moreover, some market watchers argue that CZ didn’t lose anyone’s money and continued to be a hero in the crypto community.

The founder and ex-CEO of Binance (BNB), Changpeng Zhao, who is frequently referred to as “CZ,” addressed the court’s decision handing him a four-month sentence on April 30th.

In response to the events at X, formerly known as Twitter, CZ expressed appreciation for the extensive show of sympathy and encouragement he encountered throughout the proceedings.

“I will do my time, conclude this phase, and focus on the next chapter of my life (education).”

As a researcher examining recent developments in the cryptocurrency industry, I came across an intriguing piece of news from last November. CZ, a prominent figure in this field, admitted to breaching U.S. money laundering regulations. In conjunction with this confession, Binance, the globally recognized leader in digital currency exchanges, agreed to a substantial penalty amounting to $4.3 billion as part of the plea deal.

As a financial analyst, I would rephrase it this way: In the plea deal, I observed that CZ admitted to paying a penalty amounting to fifty million dollars. Nevertheless, this fine seemed insignificant when weighed against his net worth exceeding forty billion dollars according to market estimates.

Market reaction, what’s next for Binance founder?

As an analyst, I’d rephrase that claim by saying: I find it noteworthy that the defendant received a four-month sentence instead of the proposed three-year sentence suggested by the prosecution.

As a seasoned crypto investor, I can tell you that the penalties imposed on Binance’s CZ seem insignificant when put next to the 25-year sentence meted out to FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried.

One of the market watchers, Autism Capital, claimed,

CZ truly stands out as the greatest in his field. In contrast, Sam unfortunately lost people’s money. However, CZ remains a hero to many. Incredibly, he transformed his four-month prison term into reality by meme-ing it into existence. He served his time in the most lenient camp, passing his days playing pickleball and meditating. Upon release, CZ walked away with an astonishing fortune of $47 billion dollars.

Bloomberg analyst James Seyffart also acknowledged that CZ got a great deal and quipped,

“Achieving a $40 billion profit in just four months is quite impressive. That equates to roughly $10 billion gained each month. Such returns certainly are alluring. I’d gladly make that deal as well.”

CZ’s four-month prison term implies he’ll be released by the end of Q4 in 2024. Back in March, CZ unveiled his latest initiative, named Giggle Academy, which focuses on education.

The project intends to provide free education for children, which will be his primary concern once he completes it.

The previous Binance executive made clear that he plans to maintain his role as a cryptocurrency investor who takes a hands-off approach.

I’ll continue to be a non-active investor and holder in the cryptocurrency market. Our sector has transitioned into a new era, with compliance becoming a top priority. A positive outcome of this scrutiny is that Binance has come under closer examination. Rest assured, your funds are secure on their platform (SAFU stands for “Safe Assets Funds” ensuring user funds are protected).

Over the last day, I observed a 9% decrease in BNB‘s value. Nevertheless, it managed to maintain its position above the significant psychological threshold of $500, which has served as a supportive level since March.
