As a huge fan of both animated films and horror movies, I’m absolutely thrilled about the box office successes of “Despicable Me 4” and “Longlegs.” The Minions are once again dominating the box office with their hilarious antics, pushing the Illumination franchise over the $5 billion mark. And let’s not forget about “Inside Out 2,” which is still drawing crowds despite a lengthy run.
The fourth installment of “Despicable Me” remains the box office champion, bringing in an additional $44 million this weekend in the US. This pushes the film’s domestic total to $210 million and moves Universal’s animated franchise past the $5 billion mark globally. Surprisingly successful this summer have been animated productions, with “Despicable Me 4” leading the charge and “Inside Out 2” continuing to draw audiences despite being in theaters for some time. This could result in a significant trend emerging from an unusual blockbuster season.
As a gamer, I’d say: “Longlegs” has been the surprise hit of the weekend so far. With a budget under $3 million, this little horror movie from Osgood Perkins is set to rake in an impressive $22 million during its opening weekend. Neon and A24 must be ecstatic about this turnout! I wouldn’t have been surprised if we saw earnings of $9 million, but to double that effortlessly? That’s a whole new ball game! It’s been a fruitful season for Neon as “Immaculate” smashed records with its $5.3 million haul for the Sydney Sweeney-led film. Let’s see if “Longlegs” can keep this momentum going throughout the weekend.
How Good Is Longlegs?
The Internet community is abuzz with excitement over the underfunded Horror film, and various perspectives are emerging in its wake. ComicBook’s critic, Patrick Cavanaugh, recently evaluated “Longlegs” for their platform. In his assessment, he was taken aback by Osgood Perkins’ newest creation, awarding it a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. Amidst an impressive roster of Horror releases this year, “Longlegs” could potentially secure the top spot with some more time to pass!
Cavanaugh pointed out that “Longlegs,” following the pattern set by “The Blackcoat’s Daughter,” “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House,” and “Gretel & Hansel” from Perkins, offers unique terror experiences. The marketing hype emphasizes its potential to be terrifying enough to cause lasting fear. While most viewers will survive this cinematic encounter, the chilling images they’ve seen won’t easily fade away.
Despite the ending of the story not entirely meeting the expectations raised by the first two acts of the film, experiencing such an original, daring, and unyielding piece of art that transcends the typical murder mystery genre is nothing less than exhilarating.
