WWE’s Bayley Reveals Turning Heel Was Her Decision

WWE's Bayley Reveals Turning Heel Was Her Decision

As a gamer and long-time fan of WWE, I’ve been thoroughly entertained by Bayley‘s journey in the wrestling world. Her initial popularity with the “Hugger” gimmick was endearing, but as time went on, she recognized that she needed to evolve and try new things. In 2019, she made a bold move by turning heel, which left fans shocked and intrigued.

When Bayley debuted in WWE, she gained a massive fan base with her endearing “Hugger” persona. This unique bond with audiences propelled her into the main roster alongside Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, and Becky Lynch, collectively revolutionizing women’s wrestling. While the other three women underwent significant character transformations, Bayley felt the need for a complete overhaul. In 2019 on an episode of SmackDown, she destroyed her inflatables, marking the beginning of her heel persona that left fans in disbelief. Since then, Bayley has consistently portrayed a heel character until recently when Damage CTRL attacked her before WrestleMania 40, resulting in a face turn.

Bayley’s Infamous Heel Turn in WWE

In the “What Do You Wanna Talk About?” podcast episode, Cody Rhodes, currently the Uncontested WWE Champion, and Bayley, now holding the Women’s Championship, explored various aspects of their professional journeys during their conversation. One intriguing topic was Bayley’s shocking heel turn. Surprisingly enough, it was Bayley herself who proposed the idea for this transformation. Feeling that she had reached a career juncture and desiring to experiment with new approaches, she decided that the moment was ripe to test her potential as a villain.

I understood your sentiment better when I was on the brink of uncertainty. The fear gnawed at me: what if my attempt failed? Yet, I found myself in a predicament where the beloved cheerful persona wasn’t resonating either. It felt like a fork in the road – should I continue down this path or venture into new territory? As an ardent fan, I yearned to explore various roles: the hero, the villain, and the romantic lead. I was eager for diverse experiences. Initially, I was apprehensive about potential female Cena comments, which I took as a flattering compliment in that character. However, my curiosity got the best of me, urging me to experiment with different aspects of acting.

As a fan of the actor’s work, I can relate to their experience of taking on a villainous role. Feeling stagnant in previous parts, the allure of a bad guy part became irresistible when the production team showed interest. With a bold decision to shave off my signature look, I nervously presented myself for approval. To my relief, they not only accepted the change but embraced it. This transformation allowed me to explore new depths as an artist and as a person. Connecting authentically with my character and allowing my true self to shine through was both terrifying and exhilarating. And what made it even more special was the opportunity to share this growth with the audience, creating a memorable and impactful performance.

Bayley is the present Women’s Champion in WWE, having emerged victorious in the Royal Rumble match and defeated IYO SKY at WrestleMania. Her upcoming major test in this title run comes against Nia Jax at SummerSlam in Cleveland approaching soon. Nia Jax earned her title shot after winning the Queen of the Ring competition. However, a potential wrench could be thrown into the mix by Tiffany Stratton and her Money in the Bank briefcase. Should she decide to replicate IYO SKY’s actions, she could cash in at SummerSlam, creating a three-way contest. Yet, it seems unlikely for her storyline to unfold this way just yet, as she hasn’t even had the chance to flaunt her briefcase’s bling.
