How Shannen Doherty Overcame the Behind the Scenes Drama in Her Life

Shannen Doherty, who became famous for her role as Brenda Walsh in “Beverly Hills, 90210,” reunited with her co-stars for the limited meta-series “BH90210” in 2019. Doherty also made a guest appearance on “Riverdale” when Fred Andrews’ character bid farewell. However, none of the events that transpired on the show during the late ’90s mattered much to Doherty 25 years later.

For the pre-Internet era, Shannen Doherty was the target of quite the media frenzy.

After “Beverly Hills, 90210” gained massive popularity and had celebrities gracing magazine covers left and right, tabloids began reporting turmoil behind the scenes.

Among the vibrant and young cast members, Luke Perry gained significant attention as a heartthrob. However, much whispers circulated around the females in the Fox series. Eventually, Doherty became the focus of gossip, with rumors labeling her as challenging or hard to work with.

In my experience as a lifestyle coach, I acknowledge that I have my moments of being feisty or confrontational, just like everyone else. However, I believe there’s always a reason behind my actions, even if they may come across as unpleasant to some people. Growing up, I’ve always been bold and assertive, which can be off-putting for some individuals. But in the end, I firmly believe that the outcomes are worth it.

The actress and animal rights advocate, who passed away on July 13 following a lengthy cancer fight, admitted some time ago that she had indeed made errors. However, in a society that is both fascinated and harsh in its judgment, Doherty became the symbol of misconduct during the mid-’90s.

And it was a really big deal when she left 90210 in 1994.

In the January 23, 1994 edition of TV Guide, I announced my departure from “Beverly Hills, 90210.” This interview was published before the season finale on May 25, which doubled as Brenda Walsh’s farewell episode. I described it as a “mutual decision” made between myself and executive producer Aaron Spelling.

She shared, “We found ourselves with our backs pressed against the wall.” And regarding her feelings, she added, “I can’t muster any sadness within me. Why wake up at 5 a.m., leave the embrace of my husband, and endure a full day in a job that brings me no joy?”

The Memphis-born actress, known for her roles on TV before “Beverly Hills, 90210” and the iconic film “Heathers,” shared, “When I began the show, my only concern was advancing my career. Now, what matters most to me is my marriage. I value my husband and our union seriously.” (At the time, Doherty was 22 and had been married to actor Ashley Hamilton for just three months; she filed for divorce that April.)

Despite the ongoing rumors, Doherty was allegedly let go from “Beverly Hills, 90210” after four seasons as Minnesota newcomer Brenda, the sister of Jason Priestley’s Brandon Walsh. These stories persisted due in part to Tori Spelling’s reported desire for the role. Given that Aaron Spelling was her father, this scenario became a common narrative.

At that point, the producer’s daughter mysteriously shared with TV Guide that Shannen knew the reason behind her absence from the show in the following year.

But Spelling, only 19 when that drama unfolded, came to regret her role in Doherty’s ouster.

In her interview on “Tori Spelling: Celebrity Lie Detector” in 2015, she shared, “I had a sense of belonging to a cause and a friendship that ultimately resulted in someone losing their means of earning a living. I want to clarify, she wasn’t an awful person. She was among the finest friends I have ever had.”

In our conversation on the July 17, 2023 episode of “90210MG,” Jennie Garth and I reflected upon the past and discussed Shannen Doherty’s departure from “Beverly Hills, 90210.” We acknowledged the presence of tension on set during her final episode. If we could have stepped back then and given everyone some space to cool down, perhaps Brenda wouldn’t have felt compelled to leave for London to pursue acting studies.

In the 1990s, Doherty’s fiery reputation was established and reinforced, becoming a lasting impression. This was further solidified when her tenure on “Charmed” came to an end after just three seasons, while the show itself (another production by Spelling Television) continued for another five years.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight back in May 2001, Doherty expressed that the film set was plagued with excessive dramatics, leaving little room for genuine dedication to the craft. At the age of 30, she conveyed, she could no longer afford to accommodate such distractions in her life.

Alyssa Milano, one of the stars, felt regret after her wedding to her first husband in 1999. She had asked Doherty and Holly Marie Combs to be her bridesmaids. However, tensions between them escalated to an unwanted degree.

Milano expressed her belief in a 2021 interview with ET that a significant portion of the challenges we faced stemmed from viewing each other as rivals instead of fostering the sisterhood the show was intended to represent. She admitted feeling remorseful for her role in this dynamic.

Doherty was an exceptional actress, yet her affection for her family knew no bounds. She expressed, “I deeply regret not having had the self-confidence in my own identity to acknowledge this truth during that period.”

Before it became popular, Doherty displayed remarkable strength and wasn’t shy about using her power, even though she had acknowledged her immature mistakes.

In an interview with Rolling Stone in 1992, Doherty acknowledged being described as “difficult” if that label implies a strong woman who stands her ground. She is open-minded but firm in her expectations: if someone crosses her and fails to extend the same level of respect afforded to men, they will encounter resistance.

Early on, Doherty resisted the idea of having Brenda consider losing weight from her slim figure in the script, as he was cautious about potentially sending a harmful message to his youthful audience during the prevalence of eating disorders.

The idea was abandoned, as the star’s hair color was not yet exempt from stereotyping during that period of time.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Doherty shared, “The receptionist expressed to me, ‘Your work for brunettes is impressive.’ She went on, ‘Typically, it’s the blondes who capture men’s hearts and live enviable lives. You’ve successfully reversed this perception.'”

I can’t help but share my perspective on the dynamic among the cast, as observed by Doherty: “It’s not all sunshine and roses, you know? We don’t always see eye to eye. But just like with siblings, we have our disagreements, and eventually, we make up. It’s a unique bond.”

In her 2014 memoir, Garth depicted their relationship as “a recipe for explosive conflict.” Meanwhile, Priestley described his TV sibling in his memoir that same year as having an “unbothered and nonchalant” demeanor. It was an intriguing trait, until it led to undesirable consequences.

Reflecting back, Doherty viewed her tumultuous experience on “Beverly Hills, 90210” as a preparatory phase that shaped her into the mature and wiser woman she eventually became. Despite bearing similar fiery characteristics to her younger self, she had grown naturally through this experience.

In her interview with CNN in 2010, she shared that as a young woman, she believed she needed to be forceful and assertive to be heard, even if it meant being loud and overbearing. If someone disagreed with her, she felt the need to become more insistent. However, now she approaches situations differently. She no longer emphasizes being a woman or portraying herself as a victim. Instead, she is content in her femininity, and she believes this mindset will help her progress further.

In her own words, Doherty shared the journey that inspired her to pen down “Badass: A Hard-Earned Guide to Living Life with Style and (the Right) Attitude.” She acknowledged, “I’m continuously evolving as an individual, as we all are. The badasses amongst us will undoubtedly stumble and err. However, it’s about learning from those missteps and minimizing their recurrence. Ideally, they won’t be as damaging or embarrassing as some of the past mistakes I made during my younger years.”

To truly embody a bold and fearless persona, it’s essential that you continue expanding your horizons, developing new skills, and acquiring fresh knowledge. Consequently, you’ll inevitably encounter setbacks along the way.

Time not only fosters individual development but also has the ability to mend many hurts. It may even create a layer of resilience to prevent reopening of old wounds.

After taking on the character of Brenda once more in CW’s 90210 alongside Garth as Kelly Taylor, Doherty shared with CNN that we’ve developed a strong bond as women now that we’ve grown older. We’ve both matured, and we discovered that we have a deep connection. We’ve found a fantastic new friendship in each other.

After numerous debates over the years about a potential revival, most of the original “Beverly Hills, 90210” cast members, excluding Perry who passed away in 2019, came together for the TV series “BH90210,” a meta-project. Doherty, famously connected to Perry due to their iconic on-screen romance between Brenda and Dylan, made an appearance on “Riverdale.” When Fred Andrews’ character was bid farewell from the show, Doherty guest-starred.

Twenty-five years have passed since Doherty was initially ejected from the area that brought her notoriety; however, the events that transpired back then hold no significance whatsoever now.

In 2015, Doherty disclosed her personal fight against breast cancer when the details of her illness were brought up during a lawsuit concerning insurance coverage she had initiated. She later announced in February 2020 that the cancer had come back and was now classified as stage four.

She had been battling the illness for over a year, even while working on “BH90210,” which she kept concealed.

In an interview with “Good Morning America,” Doherty expressed, “I believed that once I eventually reveal my condition, I had been putting in 16-hour workdays. People would then realize, ‘Wow, she can work despite having stage four, and so can others.’ Our lives don’t cease the instant we receive that diagnosis; there is still much living to be done.”

Later in the year, Garth and Spelling communicated with TopMob News that they were keeping in contact with Doherty while allowing her some privacy.

I occasionally peek in on her life and keep up-to-date with her stories to show support and stay informed about her wellbeing. She values having a small, intimate group of trusted friends, which I believe is an effective approach.

I’m thrilled to share that she appears to be flourishing and making a significant impact. She’s not just surviving but truly excelling, and her influence on others during this journey is truly commendable.

I also keep in touch with her regularly, and she’s aware that we’re always available for support or a pleasant conversation.

In a disheartening development, Doherty revealed in June 2023 that her cancer had progressed to her brain and she had undergone brain surgery in January to remove a tumor. She subsequently shared in November that the cancer had advanced to her bones as well.

Despite the exhausting health issues that left me trembling with fear, I couldn’t suppress my innate desire to radiate resilience. I carried on, posting vibrant images of my adventures in nature and among cherished companions, determined to infuse positivity into my online presence.

The actress, who is represented by me, filed for divorce from her husband, photographer Kurt Iswarienko, in April, following 11 years of marriage. Regrettably, she found herself compelled to take this step despite her initial reluctance.

Doherty shared a clear message on Instagram on the 21st of April: “Only those who show love, kindness, and utmost respect towards you should have a place in your life.”

During the last stages of her life, those who had witnessed Doherty’s unwavering confidence, fierce defiance, and undying determination held on to the belief that she would miraculously recover.

“Brian Austin Green, a long-time friend and former colleague of Doherty’s, shared with TopMob News in September 2023, ‘She has an incredible ability to bounce back. Among all the people I know, she is the one most capable of handling adversity.'”

The stakes of real-life and death issues have a unique ability to diminish the importance of dramatic situations on a TV set, a fact that Doherty appeared to recognize given her personal experiences.

She shared with Rolling Stone in 1992 that she was prioritizing her personal life heavily at the time, acknowledging, “If ever my fame wanes and I lose my popularity, there needs to be a strong foundation left for me.”
