As a fan, I’m absolutely thrilled with the direction that DC is taking with their latest crossover event, Absolute Power. The idea of the Trinity of Evil stealing the superpowers of Earth’s metahumans and leaving the heroes powerless is both intriguing and terrifying. Mark Waid and Dan Mora have set up an exciting premise with the disbanded Justice League and Waller’s Hall of Order as the new supreme power.
[Caution: Contains spoilers for Absolute Power #1.] In the world of DC Comics, metahumans have lost their superpowers. The trio of villains, Amanda Waller, Failsafe, and the Brainiac Queen, orchestrated this power seizure in Mark Waid and Dan Mora’s Absolute Power #1. By the story’s end, Superman and Wonder Woman were among the roster of depowered heroes. The Trinity of Evil now rules with an army of Amazo robots. However, despite the disbandment of the Justice League and the transformation of the Hall of Justice into Waller’s Hall of Order, a rebellion is taking shape.
DC has hinted that its highly-anticipated crossover event, involving four main issues and tie-ins spread across various titles of the publisher’s ongoing Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Green Arrow series, as well as a companion miniseries featuring Waller and Task Force VII, will culminate in a significant change to the DC Universe. The conclusion, scheduled for release in October, promises that DC’s superheroes will undergo transformations when Batman rallies a group of rebels: the final line of defense against Waller’s conflict with the heroes.
In Mora’s artwork below, you’ll find depictions of Amazonian Warrior Wonder Woman donning armor, the Dark Knight in a tactical Bat-suit, the sole remaining speedster of the Flash Family, Barry Allen, The Flash, an incapacitated Superman wearing a silver-and-black Kryptonian recovery suit to restore his abilities, J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter, enclosed in extraterrestrial armor, Green Lantern Hal Jordan embarking on a quest to touch the Power Battery and recharge his ring, and Aquaman, the Atlantean monarch, whose throne and powers have been usurped by his Task Force VII counterpart.
As an avid fan, I’m thrilled to share that DC will unveil the latest costumes through a set of “Resistance” variant covers. These captivating designs will be brought to life by none other than Justice League Dark artist Mikel Janin. Specifically, you can feast your eyes on the covers for Batman #151 and Green Lantern #14.
In our conversation with ComicBook, Waid shared his intention: He aimed to generate a palpable feeling of danger and tension without jeopardizing the entire universe. Having enjoyed the success of crossovers, but not being particularly proficient in large-scale cosmic tales, he set out to accomplish this as his primary objective. Therefore, he began pondering, “What could be the most devastating experience for these characters? What profound sense of grief could resonate universally among them?”
Waid added, “It’s not solely about removing their loved ones or companions from their lives for some. The question is: what common factor exists among all? My proposition is this: take away their ability to be superheroes.”
