Xbox Game Pass Is Removing One of its Best Features for Console Users

As a seasoned gamer with a deep connection to Xbox and its services, I can’t help but feel dismayed by Microsoft’s recent decision to limit the stacking capability of Xbox Game Pass for Console. The idea of being able to secure multiple years of membership at once was a game-changer for many of us, providing peace of mind and financial benefits.

As an avid gamer and an Xbox Game Pass subscriber on console, I’ve grown fond of the flexibility and value this service offers me. However, I was taken aback when Microsoft announced some changes that could impact my experience. In the coming days, they unveiled plans to raise the prices for all tiers of Xbox Game Pass, making it a more significant investment for avid gamers like myself.

Microsoft announced on its Xbox website that they will restrict the stacking of Xbox Game Pass for Console subscriptions effective September end. Previously, some users had purchased extended periods of the service in bulk from retailers and added them to their accounts to secure lower-priced long-term memberships. However, starting next month, Microsoft will only allow a maximum subscription length of 13 months.

Starting from September 18, 2024, the longest period a Game Pass subscription for Console can be extended will be 13 months, Microsoft announced in their FAQ. However, any extra time beyond 13 months already on your account won’t be affected, and this change only impacts your ability to add more than 13-month extensions after that date.

As a dedicated gamer, I can tell you that Microsoft is making some changes to Xbox Game Pass for Console. This isn’t something new I’m reporting, but rather an update on the situation. The reason behind this shift is that Microsoft intends to phase out the Xbox Game Pass for Console tier altogether. Don’t worry if you’re already a member – nothing is happening to your subscription right away. However, newcomers will no longer be able to join this specific tier and instead will need to consider Xbox Game Pass Standard as their option.

As an Xbox Game Pass for Console subscriber, the great thing is that I can keep my subscription indefinitely as long as I continue to renew it automatically. And even though there are some changes happening with the Xbox Game Pass lineup, Game Pass Ultimate isn’t being drastically affected – the only major difference is a price increase to $19.99 per month.
