Shannen Doherty: Kevin Smith Shares Heartfelt Post After Star's Death

As a huge fan of Shannen Doherty and the impact she had on my formative years in cinema, I’m devastated by the news of her passing at such a young age. I still remember watching her on “Beverly Hills 90210” and being captivated by her performances. But it was her role as Tina in Kevin Smith’s “Mallrats” that really stood out to me.

Sadly, we received the news today that Shannen Doherty, a beloved alum of “Beverly Hills 90210” and “Charmed,” passed away at the age of 53. According to her publicist Leslie Sloane’s statement, Doherty lost her long-fought battle with cancer on July 13, 2023. Doherty had been vocal about her health struggles and recently shared stories about her life and acting career on a podcast. Many colleagues and collaborators, including Kevin Smith, who worked with her in his 1995 film “Mallrats,” have taken to social media to pay their respects.

As a dedicated gamer and avid pop culture enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary influence of Shannen Doherty way before her time. Long before any other icon graced our digital screens and “broke the internet,” she single-handedly shattered it in the early ’90s, a remarkable feat considering the World Wide Web wasn’t even a twinkle in Tim Berners-Lee’s eye yet.

Shannen was an exceptional talent who not only won us over as a dear friend but also played a pivotal role in the production of Mallrats in 1995. Her fame and influence, following her success on 90210, were the driving forces behind bringing this movie to life. I fondly recall moments like watching Shannen stroll around Eden Prairie Center with her German Shepherd each morning or sharing laughter and juicy gossip between takes. A memorable tradition we started during Mallrats promotions involved Shannen writing ‘dick’ on my half of our Film Threat magazine cover while I retaliated by scribbling ‘bitch’ over hers.

Despite Shannen’s bold demeanor towards others, especially the paparazzi, she remained kind and considerate towards me. I shared this sentiment with her during my appearance on her podcast in December. I fondly recalled the girl I used to see on TV at Quick Stop who greeted me when I entered the world of show business. Oh how sad, Do-Do has passed away much too early. I already miss you dearly, and our friendship spanning over thirty years will forever be cherished by me. As my Canadian friend put it, you have truly left an indelible mark as an American icon.

Will Twilight of the Mallrats Happen?

Back in 2015, Smith unveiled plans for a “Mallrats” sequel, initially titled “MallBrats,” which he had been working on after an extended discussion with Universal. However, the project underwent significant changes over the course of a protracted negotiation. By 2016, Smith announced that the “Mallrats” sequel was no longer a movie but rather a 10-episode series called “Mallrats the Series.” However, in 2020, Smith disclosed that he had completed a first draft for a new film titled “Twilight of the Mallrats” and described it as an “unnecessary sequel” set against the backdrop of the “Mallpocalypse,” with the original cast reprising their roles. Yet, progress on this project stalled once more, leading Smith to focus on creating “Clerks III” instead.

According to Ethan Suplee, who portrayed Willam in “Mallrats,” reports suggest that Kevin wrote a script for the sequel, gathered expressions of interest from various individuals, and received affirmative responses. However, the production rights are currently held by Universal, and they have yet to give their approval for the film’s production.

At present, it’s uncertain if the production of “Mallrats” will commence, but it’s tough to envision the film without Doherty’s involvement. Our sympathies are with her loved ones during this challenging period.
