I am deeply saddened by the news of Shannen Doherty’s passing. As a long-time fan of her work, especially her role as Brenda Walsh in “Beverly Hills, 90210,” I have always admired her strength and grace, both on and off the screen. Her courageous battle with cancer over the past few years has been an inspiration to many, including me.
Sarah Michelle Gellar is remembering a friendship of a lifetime.
Two days after the passing of Shannen Doherty at the age of 53, marked by a lengthy cancer fight, her friend from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” paid a heartfelt tribute in remembrance.
“What an challenge it is to express in words the richness of a 30-year friendship! Sarah Gellar expressed this sentiment on Instagram July 15, alongside fond memories of their time together. Through the pain we feel now, we are reminded of the profound love that existed between us. I’m grateful for your heartfelt messages and stories about how @theshando touched your lives. Let us celebrate her legacy.”
Gellar mentioned that Doherty, an actress on “Charmed,” had a deep affection for animals, particularly dogs like her German Shepherd named Bowie. She strongly urged her fans to give back to local animal charities in honor of her beloved friend.
As someone who has always had a soft spot for animals, I completely resonate with Gellar’s words. I remember the joy and fulfillment I used to feel every time I visited the local animal shelter, spending hours cuddling and playing with the animals there. The way their eyes light up with curiosity and trust is an indescribable feeling that never fails to make my heart skip a beat.
I couldn’t help but share yet another batch of memories with my Instagram family, as I reminisced about the incredible 30-year friendship between Sarah and me. From our recent adventures like posing in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, to more laid-back moments lounging on an inflatable bull pool toy soaking up the sun – it’s hard to believe how many amazing experiences we’ve had together. And let me tell you, the nostalgia doesn’t stop there! I was thrilled to unearth some oldies but goodies from our WB days in the ’90s, proving that our bond has stood the test of time. What a journey it’s been! #FriendshipGoals #ThrowbackThursday
After Doherty’s passing on July 13, Gellar’s post was just the most recent expression of remembrance. Her costars from “Beverly Hills, 90210,” including Brian Austin Green, Jason Priestley, and Jennie Garth, all paid their respects as well. Jennie Garth, in particular, expressed heartfelt reflections on their close friendship.
“I’m still dealing with the deep sadness of losing my friend Shannen, whom I’ve always referred to as one of the most resilient people I’ve met. Our friendship was genuine and heartfelt. Despite appearances, our relationship went beyond any perceived rivalry, rooted instead in mutual respect and appreciation.” (Garth shared this on Instagram, July 14)

“What can one say to encapsulate three decades of friendship? Buffy mused on Instagram July 15th. The pain is intense because there was so much love, not in vain. I’m grateful for your heartfelt messages and encouragement. Your stories about the impact of @theshando are a testament to her legacy. Let us celebrate her memory together.”
The actress, who portrayed Kelly Taylor on “90210,” expressed on Instagram her ongoing sadness over the passing of her long-time friend Shannen. I’ve always referred to Shannen as one of the most resilient individuals I’ve encountered. Our bond was genuine and sincere. Despite being portrayed as adversaries on the show, Brenda Walsh and I, our true friendship was characterized by respect and admiration for each other.
Shannen, she said, “was courageous, passionate, determined and very loving and generous.”
Jennie spoke softly, “Her absence will be felt deeply within me, and I’ll keep her memory dear. My heart grieves for her loved ones, including Bowie, and everyone who treasured her.”
Tori wrote on Instagram Stories with a selfie of herself and Shannen and several broken heart emojis: “We understood each other deeply even if I haven’t found the right words to express it outwardly yet.”
“I’m deeply dismayed and mournful upon learning of my friend Shannen’s demise. On ‘Beverly Hills, 90210,’ she brought the character Brenda Walsh’s twin brother Brandon to life. Her energy was remarkable, and I’ll dearly miss her. My heart goes out to her loved ones during this challenging period.”
“My sister Shan from ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ wrote on Instagram, ‘You were always there for me, Shan. You helped shape my understanding of love. I’m going to miss you deeply, more than I can express at this moment. Thank you for being a part of my life.'”
“You were so young, yet so sad,” the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum and ex-SAG-AFTRA president shared on Instagram. “Rest in peace, Shannon. I believe Luke is waiting for you with loving arms.”
As an obsessed fan, I can’t help but feel deeply affected when I hear heartbreaking news. When the actress who brought Cindy Walsh to life on my favorite show shared on Instagram that her on-screen daughter, Shannen and Jason Priestley’s twin characters Brenda and Brandon’s real-life counterpart had passed away, I was left in a state of shock and sadness.
“She had traveled quite a distance,” she remarked. “Her time with us was cut short, but throughout her difficult journey, she remained authentic and displayed immense bravery in dealing with her own mortality. May she now find tranquility in passing.”
She openly acknowledged the intricacies of her connection with Shannen, her “Charmed” co-star, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Despite the complexities, she held deep admiration and respect for Shannen’s talent and widespread appeal. The loss of this gifted actress is mourned by countless fans, including myself. My sympathies go out to all who cherished her.
The actress, who took over from Shannen Doherty on Charmed in 2001, commented on her last Instagram post: “A brave and strong-willed woman like you, Shannen. Rest in peace, your loving father is embracing his dear daughter now.”
She went on to express, “Love to your mom, your devoted dog, and everyone who deeply cares for you. Love to Holly (Marie Combs). Love to all of your numerous fans whom you reciprocated the love with. If anyone defied death, it was you, brave Shannen. I pay my respects to you.”
As a deeply devoted admirer, I can’t help but express how much I’ve learned from the remarkable actor who brought Leo Wyatt to life on Charmed. Through his Instagram posts, he’s imparted valuable lessons that have left an indelible mark on me. He’s shown me what true strength looks like – fearless and unwavering, living with a clear sense of purpose. Most importantly, he’s taught me to recognize my worth and never give up on my convictions.
“Forever loved!” he added. “Truly heartbroken.”
“I’m deeply saddened by Shannen Doherty’s death. When I received my own breast cancer diagnosis, I recalled how bravely she shared her journey with the world. Her friendship came as a surprise to me, as watching her on ‘90210’ was a significant part of my childhood when I was 10 years old.”
She and I connected over our mutual struggle and compassion for other women. Reflecting on our last conversation a few months back, she checked in on my well-being and asked if there was anything she could do for me – typical of Shannen’s selfless nature, even in the midst of her own fierce battle against this terrible illness.
“Cancer took Shannen from us, but she faced it with incredible courage, dignity, and grace. I’m deeply moved by her strength and resilience. My heart goes out to her mother, who was not only her best friend but also her hero and unwavering support throughout her journey. May Shannen’s spirit soar high in the heavens.”
The actress, fighting multiple sclerosis, expressed her gratitude in a comment on Shannen’s last Instagram post: “Your resilience inspires us. Keep pushing forward. A rebel’s spirit.”
“I love you,” the actress commented on Shannen’s recent Instagram post. “May you soar high, beautiful and brave woman. Your gentle heart and selfless acts will be deeply missed.”
“The courage you displayed throughout your Cancer battle touched people deeply. May you find peace now. God’s blessings to your dear ones.”
I once worked with an actor on the iconic show “Beverly Hills, 90210.” During his guest appearance, he played the role of Rick, who had a brief romance with Brenda, my character, upon their chance encounter in Paris. Recently, I took to X to express my deep sadness and pay tribute to Shannen, the remarkable actress who brought Brenda to life. Alongside a weeping emoji, I wrote “RIP Shannen.”
The Wicked star wrote in an Instagram comment, “Fly with the angels sweet precious soul!”
He expressed on Twitter, “My heart is shattered,” after meeting Shannen Doherty for their film “Fortress” two years prior. Her vibrant enthusiasm and exceptional talent left an indelible impression. Sadly, she was young and her loss is deeply felt. May she find peace.
“Shannen Doherty passed away, he shared on X (previously Twitter). I had the pleasure of meeting her during the Full House era. Her kindness stood out, along with her radiant smile. Today, I’ll reflect on the courageous women in my life who have lost their battle with cancer – my mom, sister Sharon, and niece Shannon. They were all strong, beautiful beings.”
Next to an article sharing the unfortunate news of Shannen’s passing, the journalist expressed on Instagram, “I’m deeply saddened by this heartbreaking news.”
“She shared on Twitter her disappointment and sadness, expressing that she had hoped for a recovery from the illness for that person, who is an actress on Community.”
