AEW's Tony Khan Praises John Cena Ahead of WWE Retirement Tour

As a long-time fan of professional wrestling, I have had the pleasure of witnessing the incredible career of John Cena unfold before my eyes. His announcement of retirement after the 2025 WWE season has left me with a mix of emotions. Excitement for what lies ahead, and sadness that one of the greatest wrestlers of our time is stepping away from the ring.

I, John Cena here, have made a big decision about my in-game career. At the recent Money in the Bank event in Toronto, I announced to the cheering crowd that I’ll be hanging up my virtual sneakers by 2025. I’m planning to give it my all and compete as full-time as possible before retiring. In a post-show presser, I hinted at potentially participating in 30-40 matches for WWE. The finer details are still being sorted out, but rest assured, I’ll be battling it out in some iconic events like the Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, and WrestleMania 41 – all of which will mark my final appearances.

The AEW President has love for Big Match John.

In a conversation with Maggie and Perloff, AEW president Tony Khan lauded the achievements of John Cena in preparation for his retirement.

I personally believe John Cena ranks among the elite wrestlers of today’s scene, undeniably making him one of the greats in modern wrestling.

When asked to name the top four professional wrestlers who hold a special place in Khan’s heart because he grew up watching them, Khan revealed that Cena is among these respected individuals.

“When it comes to the most remarkable figures in modern times, I firmly believe that he is one of them. For me personally, many individuals on my Mount Rushmore are those I admired growing up and even had the privilege of collaborating with later in life. Sting is absolutely among them. My Mount Rushmore includes Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat, Bret Hart, Steve Austin, and I’m still pondering over adding Ric Flair to this esteemed group.”

Khan and Cena have rarely teamed up formally in the past, but their professional paths have intersected unintentionally numerous times. All Elite Wrestling (AEW) broadcasts its programs on Warner Bros. Discovery networks – AEW Dynamite on TBS and AEW Collision on TNT. Cena frequently partners with Warner Bros. Discovery for film and television projects. Recently, Cena served as the host for Discovery’s Shark Week, and there was a promotional tie-in between Shark Week and AEW Dynamite: Beach Break.

I’ve been excited to see John Cena mentioned in AEW programming. During a Fall 2021 episode of AEW Dynamite, MJF referred to him as the “Invisible Man” while trash-talking his then-rival CM Punk.

MJF expressed his excitement about potential future collaborations with John in an interview with ComicBook in December 2023, stating, “I really believe we will work together someday. I’m definitely looking forward to it and can’t wait.”

In January 2025, when the new season of WWE Monday Night Raw starts streaming on Netflix, Cena’s retirement tour is planned to commence officially.
