Whoopi Goldberg Reveals She Scattered Her Mom's Ashes at Disneyland

As a dedicated fan of Whoopi Goldberg and her heartwarming stories, I can’t help but be moved by her unique way of honoring her mother’s memory at Disneyland. Losing a loved one is never easy, and Whoopi’s decision to spread her mother’s ashes on It’s a Small World, her mom’s favorite ride, is a testament to their special bond and the joy that Disney brought to their lives.

Whoopi Goldberg is giving a whole new meaning to the happiest place on earth.

After the passing of her mother, Emma Harris, in 2010, one of the co-hosts on “The View” shared that she chose to pay tribute to her by scattering her mother’s ashes on It’s a Small World, her beloved ride at Disneyland.

“On Late Night with Seth Meyers on July 11, Whoopi cautioned against doing this, saying, ‘It’s best not to do it.'”

The 68-year-old shared that her mom loved Disneyland deeply, with It’s a Small World being her all-time favorite attraction.

When I grew up, there was a World’s Fair held in New York, and that’s where Small World made its debut.

When I visited Disneyland after losing my mother, I wanted to find a way to keep her memory alive during the journey. As I rode on It’s a Small World, I carried a small portion of her cremated remains with me. Whenever I felt a strong emotion or nostalgia, I would gently scoop some ashes and then cover it up by faking a big sneeze. This way, I believed her spirit was traveling the world with me, making it a truly personal experience on the ride.

In a light-hearted manner, I’d quip back, “Well, it seems my cold is only growing stronger by the minute!” after a sudden sneeze, mimicking Whoopi’s playful style.

Whoopi Goldberg didn’t limit the scattering of her mother’s ashes to It’s a Small World; instead, she shared that she performed her signature fake sneeze gesture around the flower beds close to the park entrance as well.

The Disney Legend and Oscar winner eventually confessed to Disney.

She continued, “I informed them I had carried out the task. I felt compelled to double-check, you see, that I hadn’t inadvertently done something risky, as it hadn’t crossed my mind at first. However, there’s a valid explanation why they discourage floating ashes.”

Disneys Disneyland and Disney World are popular choices for final restings places among many people, including Whoopi. In fact, Disney staff reportedly clean up cremated remains about every month to the Wall Street Journal in 2018.

As an over-the-moon theme park fan, I’d put it this way: When guests are informed that a beloved ride is temporarily closed due to technical issues, behind the scenes, a dedicated team of custodial heroes is hard at work. They’re not just idly waiting, oh no! They’re conducting a meticulous HEPA cleanup. Armed with an ultra-fine vacuum cleaner, they’re diligently sucking up every last speck of ash that might have been left behind. It’s their tireless efforts that ensure the rides are not just functioning optimally, but also safe and ready for us fans to enjoy once more!

And there’s one ride that guests choose far more than others to spread ashes on.

I, as a dedicated Disney custodian, cannot help but musingly remark that the Haunted Mansion may hold an astonishing amount of human ash within its walls. The thought is almost amusing to me.
