As a die-hard fan of George R.R. Martin’s world of Westeros and the expansive HBO franchise it has become, I can’t help but be in awe of the innovative additions to the lore of the “Dance of the Dragons” in “House of the Dragon.” The introduction of new characters and elements, like the intriguing and complex figure of Cheese and his loyal dog, has added depth and nuance to the already rich storyline.
I, as a devoted fan and avid gamer, have been utterly captivated by George R.R. Martin’s intricate world of Westeros in “Game of Thrones.” The mesmerizing storyline has expanded exponentially at HBO, giving birth to captivating spin-offs like “House of the Dragon.” This expansion has introduced a wealth of fresh elements to the Targaryen civil war, also known as the “Dance of the Dragons,” which even the brilliant mind of George R.R. Martin can’t help but envy for the groundbreaking ideas that he didn’t initially conceive.
For instance, Martin shared on his blog that Ryan Condal, the writer and showrunner of “House of the Dragon,” along with director Alan Taylor for Season 2’s premiere, had impressed him with a fresh element: a dog owned by the untrustworthy rat-catcher named “Cheese.”
In my latest blog entry, I shared my thoughts on the recent addition to the show I’m a huge fan of. The introduction of a new character, a dog, had me feeling a bit uneasy. As much as I love the original story, I’ve always been wary of screenwriters making changes to the source material when they adapt it for the screen, especially when that source material is something I’ve created myself.
Despite creating the backstory of “Blood & Cheese” and its canine character in his “Song of Fire and Ice” novels, the author acknowledged the TV show’s remarkable portrayal of the dog named Cheese. In a short screen time, the show brought the character to life with depth and complexity.
As a gamer, I can tell you that I play the role of “Cheese” in the dark and twisted world of Westeros. Partnered with my fellow assassin, “Blood,” we were hired guns, our targets being The Greens, who had the audacity to take the life of Prince Lucerys Velaryon at Daemon Targaryen’s command.
Martin initially disliked Cheese and was disgusted when he saw him harm a dog. But later, as the dog stayed by his side, looking up at him with affection, it touched Martin deeply and made him reflect on the complexity of human emotions. Even the most despised individuals are capable of love and being loved. The quiet companionship of that small dog during its brief screen time added depth to Cheese’s character.
Martin acknowledged the brilliance of the idea by expressing, “If only that clever dog idea was mine. Alas, it wasn’t me, but someone else deserves the recognition. I’m content with that outcome.”
House of the Dragon Season 2 is streaming on Max and airing on HBO.
