I’ve heard it stated that the Modern Family actress announced her separation from her husband in 2023, after seven years of marriage, due to a disagreement over having children. However, this account doesn’t align with my experience. The True Blood star refuted these claims, declaring emphatically that the story was unfounded.
Joe shared with Men’s Journal in an interview on July 16 that for the initial 1.5 years of their relationship, we made an effort to start a family. During our first month of dating, we had a serious discussion about children. I openly expressed my feelings, stating, “If you have decided against having kids, then I’ll be aware of this and understand what our future together looks like.”
He assured the 47-year-old woman, “I vowed to stay if things didn’t go as planned, and I kept my promise.”
Based on what Joe shared, he and Caitlin O’Connor went their separate ways because people grow apart and it’s a normal occurrence.
He went on, “Being portrayed as if I were experiencing a midlife crisis after nine years, and then demanding something possibly harmful from someone, ‘Do this, or I’ll leave’? That wasn’t my character.” (Or) “Nine years ago, people began to view me as having a midlife crisis and I gave an ultimatum to someone about doing something potentially harmful, but that’s not who I truly am.”
Yet, Sofia – who is now in a relationship with orthopedic surgeon Justin Saliman – mentioned before that having children was a major concern during her divorce proceedings.
I’ve found myself at a crossroads in my marriage recently, and it all boils down to our differing desires regarding starting a family. My husband, being younger than me, is eager to have children and experience the joys of parenthood. However, the thought of becoming an older mom doesn’t sit well with me. I believe it wouldn’t be fair to the child or my role as a mother. While I hold utmost respect for those who choose this path, it no longer aligns with my personal aspirations and plans.
Sofía shares a 32-year-old son named Manolo with her ex-husband Joe Gonzalez, whom she gave birth to when she was just 19. Now that she’s approaching the stage of becoming a grandmother, she feels more prepared and eager to experience motherhood once again.
“When my son becomes a father, I’ll ask him to let me care for the newborn for a while before returning it to him. That’s the role I need to play.”
