As a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro’s films, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming vinyl release of the score to “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.” I was captivated by del Toro’s unique vision in the 2004 adaptation of Mike Mignola’s comic, but it never quite received the recognition it deserved compared to other comic book adaptations. However, after the critical success of “Pan’s Labyrinth,” del Toro had the opportunity to bring his creative genius to bear on a sequel that truly showcased the depth and richness of the Hellboy universe.
In 2004, Guillermo del Toro brought a cherished comic book adaptation to life with “Hellboy,” but due to its modest success compared to adaptations like “X-Men” and “Spider-Man,” it was largely overlooked by mainstream audiences. However, after del Toro’s success with “Pan’s Labyrinth,” he had the opportunity to choose any project, leading him back to collaborate once more with star Ron Perlman for “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.” The score for this beloved sequel has now been given a vinyl release by Varèse Sarabande and Craft Recordings. The deluxe edition of the soundtrack will be available in various colorways and can be pre-ordered before its release on September 27th.
As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that Varèse Sarabande and Craft Recordings have made my day by announcing the long-awaited first-ever vinyl release of the incredible score from Guillermo del Toro’s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.” This 2-LP Deluxe Edition is a must-have for collectors, and I can hardly contain my excitement!
Guillermo del Toro and Danny Elfman, two legendary figures in the realm of fantasy and horror cinema, joined forces for the first time in “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” (2008). This sequel to del Toro’s successful 2004 film “Hellboy,” based on Mike Mignola’s comic-book lore, follows Ron Perlman as Hellboy and his team at the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense as they battle a mythical prince intent on returning Earth to magical beings.
As a huge fan of “Hellboy II,” I can tell you that the movie’s enchanting soundtrack is nothing short of magnificent. In the first person, I’d say that this grand symphony brings a large orchestra and choir to life, delivering pulse-pounding action sequences, gothic depth, and quirky humor in equal measure. The score boasts captivating world music for the Troll Market scene, heartfelt homages to my idol Bernard Herrmann, and an intimate, moving portrayal of Hellboy’s connection with Liz (Selma Blair). It’s a delightful rollercoaster ride through a fantastical world that perfectly complements del Toro’s vision.
As a huge fan, I can’t help but feel drawn to anyone who excels in creating intriguing worlds of fantasy or horror. Elfman expressed this sentiment in Daniel Schweiger’s new liner notes for the Deluxe Edition. For instance, Del Toro and I share a common appreciation for these genres. He distinctly recalled the unique style of “Hellboy II,” which possessed an off-kilter and whimsical vibe, yet harbored undercurrents of darkness that he believed would perfectly complement Elfman’s talents. In contrast, “Hellboy III” was a more somber exploration of fantasy, examining the decay and deterioration within these enchanted realms – a project tailor-made for Elfman to compose an emotionally resonant masterpiece in Mike Mignola’s universe.
You can order the deluxe soundtrack of “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” in advance, as it will be released and made available for purchase on September 27th.
