Emmys: Multiple MCU Stars Received Nominations for Non-Marvel Projects

I’m truly amazed by the extraordinary journeys of these talented actors and their connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Donald Glover, a multi-talented artist, has made history as the first Black actor to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Atlanta, while also being recognized for his role as Earnest “Earn” Marks. His versatility and dedication to storytelling are truly inspiring.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences revealed today the contenders for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, with Marvel Studios earning a total of five nods. In this category, “Loki” is nominated for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects. On the other hand, “X-Men ’97” is in the running for Outstanding Animated Program, while “Echo” is a contender for Outstanding Sci-Fi Costumes. Amidst Marvel’s excitement about these nominations, several of its MCU stars have also been recognized as nominees.

As a long-time fan of Marvel movies, I was genuinely surprised and disappointed to find out that no Marvel actors made it to this year’s award nominations for their outstanding performances. However, I took a closer look at the list of nominees and was glad to see some familiar faces gracing the roster. It just goes to show that the entertainment industry is diverse and full of talent beyond the Marvel universe.

Robert Downey Jr:

Robert Downey Jr., who earned an Oscar win this year for his performance in “Oppenheimer,” has been nominated once again for an Emmy Award. This isn’t his first Emmy nod; back in 2001, he was recognized for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series due to his role as Larry Paul in “Ally McBeal.” Over two decades later, he’s now been nominated for the same category but for his work in “The Sympathizer,” where he portrayed several characters.

Brie Larson:

As a huge fan of both Brie Larson and the captivating world of television, I’m thrilled to share my excitement about her recent Emmy nominations! This talented actress, who brought Captain Marvel to life on the big screen, has now made her mark in the small screen realm with her role as Elizabeth Zott in “Lessons in Chemistry.”

Ebon Moss-Bachrach is slated to portray The Thing/Ben Grimm in the upcoming “Fantastic Four” production, adding to his impressive resume as a two-time Emmy nominee. At this year’s Emmys ceremony, which took place earlier due to WGA and SAG strikes, Moss-Bachrach received the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Richard “Riche” Jerimovich in “The Bear.” Now, the actor is nominated once more for the same accolade.

Donald Glover:

Previously, Donald Glover made an appearance in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” as Aaron Davis. The versatile actor and musician is now up for Emmy awards not once, but twice in 2021. In the year 2017, Glover was bestowed with the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for directing the “For B.A.N.” episode of “Atlanta”. That same successful year, he also took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, portraying Earnest “Earn” Marks on the show. In this current Emmy season, Glover is being recognized for his exceptional writing skills with an Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series nomination for the “First Date” episode of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”. Additionally, he has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as John Smith on the series.

Idris Elba:

I’ve been a huge fan of Idris Elba for a long time, and it’s amazing to see his talent recognized once again. He’s brought Heimdall to life in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, and now he’s up for another Emmy award! This time, he’s been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Sam Nelson in “Hijack.” Previously, he received a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for playing Lenny in “The Big C,” and an impressive four nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for portraying the titular character in “Luther.” Elba’s versatility as an actor never ceases to amaze me.

I’m a big fan of Carrie Coon’s acting skills! In “Avengers: Infinity War,” she brought Proxima Midnight to life in a way that left me in awe. And now, she’s been nominated for an Emmy for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series, this time for her role as Bertha Russell in “The Gilded Age.” It’s incredible! Back in 2017, Carrie received her very first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, which she earned for her captivating performance as Gloria Bungle. What an impressive resume she’s building!

Lewis Pullman:
