Nintendo Switch Fans are Baffled by New Joy-Con Charging Stand

As a long-time Nintendo Switch user, I can’t help but feel both excited and puzzled by the recent announcement of the Joy-Con Charging Stand. Having owned my Switch since its release in 2017, I’ve gone through numerous pairs of Joy-Cons and have relied on third-party charging solutions to keep them powered up. So, the prospect of an official charging stand is certainly appealing.

Since its release in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has been a popular console in the market. Recently, Nintendo unveiled an anticipated accessory for this device: an Official Joy-Con Charging Stand. This accessory, which will be available in Japan and Europe starting October 17th, allows users to charge two Joy-Cons (or NES controllers) simultaneously while not in use. Additionally, the stand can be detached to function as a controller when it’s charging. Although this practical addition is welcome, the timing of its announcement feels peculiar!

Nintendo’s announcements about the new Joy-Con Charging Stands on X/Twitter have left many people wondering “why the delay?”. It is an intriguing query since third-party charging stands for Joy-Cons have been available for some time. The fact that a successor to the Switch is anticipated within the next eight months makes this release seem unusual. This announcement has sparked further speculation about whether the upcoming console, referred to as “Switch 2”, will be compatible with the existing Joy-Cons or if there will be design changes. If “Switch 2” does incorporate different Joy-Con designs (as rumored), yet retains the ability to use the current ones, it is plausible that users might require a separate charging solution for the older models. This accessory could prove useful even in the long run, given that Wii Remotes were still supported during the Wii U era.

It’s not always easy to understand why Nintendo makes certain decisions, such as releasing a new accessory like the Joy-Con Charging Stand. However, it’s possible that they believe there’s still demand for the current Switch console. The system and its software continue to be popular, and some users might hold off on upgrading right away. For those individuals with multiple pairs of Joy-Cons at home, a charging stand could be a practical investment.

Regardless of the outcome, we’ll need to be patient and find out if this accessory gets released in North America, or if it continues to only be available in the UK and Japan.
