Splitgate 2 is AAA, 1047 Games Expanded to Over 170 Employees

As a long-time gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen countless games come and go. Some have left a lasting impression, while others have failed to deliver on their promises. When Splitgate burst onto the scene in 2021, it piqued my interest with its unique blend of Halo-style shooting and Portal-esque portal mechanics. However, it was clear that this game was not on par with the major multiplayer shooters dominating the market.

In 2021, Splitgate experienced remarkable growth in popularity, drawing in fans with its tagline “Halo meets Portal.” However, it was clear that this multiplayer shooter didn’t quite measure up to the major multiplayer shooters currently available. Developers at 1047 Games acknowledged this, stressing that their upcoming announcement of Splitgate 2 signified a significant upgrade to an AAA-level production.

On Xbox Wire, Hilary Goldstein from 1047 Games shared that the development team aimed to make Splitgate 2 a complete and high-quality production, as opposed to its earlier version.

As a huge fan of Splitgate, I’d say: “After achieving viral success with Splitgate, we asked ourselves: how do we top that? Our answer: make it even better. From the beginning of developing Splitgate 2, our goal has been to create an experience that rivals the best shooter games out there. While Splitgate is already a blast to play and hard to put down, we knew it wasn’t yet a true AAA title. That’s what we’ve been focusing on for the past two years.”

Goldstein disclosed that in order to make “Splitgate 2” a reality, the studio grew substantially, hiring experienced professionals from various game developers and corporations including 343 Industries, Riot Games, and Activision Blizzard among others.

In Goldstein’s own words, they aimed for an encounter that was both testing yet accessible, allowing for significant decisions to be made prior to entering the competition. Additionally, it was essential that the experience be visually stunning.

To bring that into existence, we had to assemble an exceptional team of experienced developers, formerly from Riot, 343i, and Activision Blizzard, to enhance our abilities. I’m fortunate to collaborate with individuals who have created some of my beloved games. Their expertise was essential to ensure that Splitgate 2 wasn’t just an upgrade but a genuine sequel. A game that could quench the thirst for something fresh and engaging not only for our existing fanbase but also attract a multitude of new players.

IGN reported that during the production of Splitgate 2, 1047 Games grew from a team of approximately 20 members to over 170 employees. This team now comprises developers who have previously worked on notable projects such as Call of Duty and God of War.

In 2025, 1047 Games will release the new version of Splitgate, named Splitgate 2, on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. This confirmation comes directly from the developer. Rest assured, attendees of Gamescom can look forward to trying out this game during the event.
