Superman & Lois: First Final Season Poster Homages Classic Superman Cover

As a long-time comic book and superhero gaming enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing some truly iconic storylines unfold over the years. Among them, none have left a deeper impact than “The Death of Superman” saga. The anticipation surrounding the final season of “Superman & Lois,” with its latest poster teasing the impending adaptation of this classic tale, has rekindled my excitement and nostalgia for this epic storyline.

The upcoming final season of Superman & Lois seems set to bring “The Death of Superman” storyline to life, as suggested by a new poster reminiscent of Superman #75 comic cover by Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding, and Glenn Whitmore. In the picture, Superman’s torn cape drifts in Earth orbit, symbolizing his fierce space battle against Doomsday from season three’s finale. While the cape was shredded and flapping in Metropolis’ wind in the comic, the striking resemblance is hard to overlook – all the more so when fans have been buzzing about this adaptation since the conclusion of season three due to the arrival of Doomsday.

I’ve been a huge fan of Superman since I was a kid. His strength and unwavering moral compass have always inspired me. So when I saw the intriguing question “What if there was no Superman?” posted on Instagram, accompanied by a teaser for the upcoming trailer, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of curiosity. The image of the Superman #75 cover only added fuel to my excitement. As someone who grew up with this iconic character, I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.

Back in 1992, I was deeply engrossed in the epic saga of “Doomsday!: The Death of Superman.” This wasn’t just any ordinary comic book story; it took over all four monthly issues of “Superman” and even invaded “Justice League America.”

The story has undergone several transformations – initially in DC’s initial animated film bearing the DC Universe label, titled “Superman: Doomsday.” In this rendition, the similarities to the original comics were minimal, yet it established Lex Luthor as a key figure in the emergence of Doomsday. This concept was revisited in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which also concluded with Superman’s demise, and later in a two-part animated series called “Death and Return of Superman.”

“The headline ‘A World Without Superman!’ applied not only to the ‘Funeral For a Friend’ narrative following Superman’s demise, but also to various other comics across the DC Universe that explored stories born from Superman’s passing.”

Following Superman’s demise, the comic book tale “Reign of the Supermen” came about, introducing four new characters vying for the title of Man of Steel. These individuals were John Henry Irons/Steel, a genetically enhanced young Superman, The Eradicator, and Hank Henshaw, a Cyborg Superman. In this narrative, Henshaw turned out to be the story’s main antagonist. Characters inspired by Eradicator, Steel, and Superboy have made appearances in “Superman & Lois,” potentially leading to a rendition of “Reign of the Supermen” during its fourth season. The series also incorporated the black “recovery suit,” which was initially presented in “Reign of the Supermen,” as the attire for an evil Superman who murdered Lois on Irons’ Earth. However, given the significant role Clark Kent and actor Tyler Hoechlin play, it is improbable that the season will be a direct adaptation of this story.

Tomorrow, we’ll get a sneak peek into the last season with a new trailer, providing some insight into its plot.
