Tony Khan Credits AEW Personality for Helping Develop Mariah May and Toni Storm Story

As a long-time wrestling fan and follower of All Elite Wrestling (AEW), I have been thoroughly captivated by the intriguing storyline between Toni Storm and Mariah May. Having grown up watching classic Hollywood films, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between this narrative and iconic movies like “All About Eve” and “Sunset Boulevard.” The way Mariah’s character has been developed, with her Hollywood glamour gear and obsessive behavior towards Toni Storm, is a testament to the creativity and attention to detail that goes into AEW’s storytelling.

Over the past few months, Mariah May’s intriguing relationship with AEW Women’s World Champion Toni Storm has been a major talking point among wrestling fans worldwide. Ever since Mariah made her debut in AEW last November as an ardent admirer of Toni, this captivating storyline has drawn inspiration from classic Hollywood tales. The early stages of their feud brought to mind films like “All About Eve” directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and “Sunset Boulevard” by Billy Wilder. Toni’s character bears a striking resemblance to these old Hollywood archetypes, particularly with her glamorous attire reminiscent of Hollywood’s golden era. AEW President Tony Khan acknowledges that he wasn’t the only one behind the development of this storyline; in fact, he had assistance from a fellow AEW personality backstage.

Tony Khan Discusses How AEW’s Greatest Women’s Story Came To Be

As a gamer, I can tell you that my trusted right-hand man during this journey is none other than RJ. He’s the only one in our team who has watched classics like “All About Eve” and “Sunset Boulevard,” and his deep understanding of old Hollywood and movies from that era has proven to be invaluable. His immense value and tremendous contributions have made all the difference throughout this process. Not only does RJ possess a natural aptitude for wrestling, but he’s also been an inspiration by utilizing these movies as creative fuel.

In 2022, RJ joined AEW and began working on their “Road To” series, where he drove wrestlers around and created content. This experience later developed into the popular weekly YouTube show, “Hey! EW,” in which RJ interviews different professional wrestlers. The fans love this show and it even helped RJ secure a role in AEW’s broadcasting team when Renee Paquette came aboard. During pay-per-view events, they can often be seen together on AEW’s Zero Hour, discussing the most anticipated matches of the night.

Before joining AEW, I spent around a year with WWE, producing digital content for them. I created things like the “WrestleMania After Dark with RJ City” sketches for WrestleMania 37, as well as a segment on “The Bump” called “Wednesday Morning Wake-Up.” In this segment, I had the chance to interview WWE superstars and celebrities.

In March of 2023, during the ongoing pandemic, RJ shared a tweet about an abandoned pitch on Twitter. Suddenly, Tony Khan reached out to him through direct messages and asked if he was still with WWE. Surprised, RJ responded and was then invited for sit-down interviews on AEW’s Road To Revolution event. It seemed that Tony Khan had discovered RJ’s work during this time, despite the mystery of how he became aware of it. Tony Khan’s humor and insight impressed RJ.

In simpler terms, he had a clear idea of what he wanted from me, using his comedic skills. After three weeks with no response, I assumed I had upset them. Later, at Revolution, I was uneasy about an upcoming event, sitting in an SUV with a crew and expressing my doubts. However, Paul Wight joined us and we ended up having a good time instead.
