Binding of Isaac Creator Shares Update on Next Game

As a long-time fan of Edmund McMillen’s games, I’m thrilled to hear that progress on his latest project, Mewgenics, is coming along nicely. It’s been a rollercoaster ride for this game since its initial announcement back in 2012, but McMillen’s tenacity and dedication have kept it alive through the years.

Edmund McMillen of “Binding of Isaac” fame has been intermittently developing his next project, “Mewgenics,” since 2012. Initially announced as a collaboration between McMillen and Team Meat during the creation of “Super Meat Boy,” the game was later abandoned after years in production. However, McMillen regained control over the game in 2018 and joined forces with Tyler Glaiel to restart development. In this new phase, “Mewgenics” morphed into a tactical role-playing roguelite and was assigned a tentative release date in 2025. Recently, McMillen shared an extensive update on the game’s Steam page, providing fans with insights into its current development status and potential upcoming news about the launch date.

In the recent update, McMillen provided insights into the development progress of Mewgenics. He mentioned that they have managed to create 15 enemies and 12 bosses so far, with the monster roster nearing completion. Regarding incomplete aspects, McMillen pointed out that approximately one-quarter of the items are still under development, around one-sixth of the events remain to be finished, and he estimated that roughly three-quarters of the sound effects have been accomplished, although determining the exact status on this front is challenging.

McMillen expressed optimism that they will complete all content for “Mewgenics” by New Year’s, after which they will polish the game and kick off promotional efforts in preparation for its launch. However, development can be unpredictable, so minor setbacks are possible, but it seems likely that we’ll receive a release date in early 2025 and the game will meet its planned 2025 release goal.

In my excitement for the latest blog update, I’d like to share that the post provides an intriguing insight into the functioning of NPCs in Mewgenics. Initially, McMillen modeled the system after Animal Crossing, but now, you’ll be selling cats to these characters for various upgrades. Each NPC has unique preferences for the type of cats they desire, making it essential to plan and create diverse cat types accordingly. This addition enhances the gameplay experience, maintaining the central theme of cats in Mewgenics.

Mewgenics is set to debut in the year 2025, yet a definitive rollout date remains undetermined. At present, the game is planned exclusively for release on personal computers. However, there’s a possibility that additional platforms may be incorporated at a later stage.
